What is Inconel 600?

Inconel 600 (UNS N06600) is the original nickel-chromium alloy with Ni ≥72% and Cr 14–17%, providing broad corrosion resistance to organic acids, alkaline solutions and high-temperature oxidising gases to 1176°C. Its non-magnetic austenitic structure retains good mechanical properties from cryogenic temperatures to 1000°C without heat treatment. Inconel 600 fasteners are used in heat treatment furnace fixtures, nuclear fuel element spacers, food processing equipment, alkaline electrolysis cells and chemical plant hardware where mildly oxidising and alkaline environments require a material above SS 316L capability. Covered by ASTM B166 for fastener bar stock.

Inconel 600 Fasteners Chemical Composition

Inconel 600 fasteners derive their exceptional properties from a nickel-chromium-iron composition, typically containing 72% nickel, 14-17% chromium, and 6-10% iron. The high nickel content provides outstanding resistance to a wide range of corrosive media and stress corrosion cracking, while chromium contributes to oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures. Minor additions of manganese, copper, silicon, and carbon are carefully controlled to enhance strength, weldability, and metallurgical stability without compromising ductility.

These alloying characteristics translate into fasteners with excellent resistance to oxidizing and reducing environments, chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking, and high-temperature degradation. The alloy maintains strength and structural integrity from cryogenic temperatures up to 1150°C, making it ideal for aerospace, nuclear, chemical processing, and heat-treatment equipment applications. Its combination of mechanical reliability, corrosion resistance, and thermal stability makes Inconel 600 an industry-preferred choice for critical fastening applications demanding long-term performance under extreme conditions.

Applications

Inconel 600 Fastener Applications

Inconel 600 Fasteners from RealBolt Engineering Industries are specified wherever corrosion resistance, elevated-temperature strength, or chemical media compatibility is critical to fastener performance. Primary industries and end-uses for Inconel 600 fasteners include furnace parts, heat exchangers, chemical processing, nuclear reactors.
Inconel 600 bolts, studs and nuts are used for radiant tubes, retorts, muffles, baskets, burner parts and furnace fixtures where oxidation resistance and stable strength are required during repeated thermal cycling.
Alloy 600 fasteners perform well in sodium hydroxide, organic acids and many alkaline media, making them suitable for reactors, evaporators, piping flanges and valve assemblies exposed to caustic corrosion.
UNS N06600 fasteners have a long history in pressurized water reactor components, steam generators and high purity water equipment because the alloy resists chloride ion stress corrosion cracking.
Inconel 600 screws and washers are selected for chloride containing atmospheres, instrumentation, pump equipment and sensor assemblies where austenitic stainless steel fasteners may crack under tensile stress.

Frequently Asked Questions About Inconel 600 Fasteners

Browse the questions below to get quick, expert answers about Inconel 600 Fasteners — covering alloy specifications (UNS N06600), applicable standards (ASTM B166), temperature ratings, corrosion performance, and how to source certified Inconel 600 fasteners from RealBolt Engineering Industries.
Inconel 600 is used for high-temperature furnace fixture bolts, nuclear fuel assembly spacers, food processing equipment (NaOH resistance) and alkaline electrolysis cell hardware where its Ni ≥72% provides SCC immunity unlike SS grades.
Yes — Inconel 600’s high nickel content (≥72%) provides inherent resistance to chloride SCC that causes failures in austenitic SS. However it is susceptible to intergranular attack in high-purity water at elevated reactor temperatures (sensitisation under PWR conditions). Inconel 690 is preferred for nuclear primary water service.
Inconel 600 is serviceable to 1176°C in oxidising atmospheres and 1093°C in continuous service. For carburising atmospheres above 900°C, Inconel 601 (with Al addition) is preferred for its superior carburisation resistance.
ASTM B166 covers Ni-Cr-Fe alloy (Inconel 600) rod and bar. ASME SB-166 is the pressure-vessel code equivalent. DIN equivalent is 2.4816 per EN 10095. All supplied with EN 10204 3.1 MTC.
