The corrosion-resistant workhorse explained

What is Stainless Steel Fasteners?

Stainless steel is an iron-chromium alloy family containing a minimum of 10.5% chromium, which forms a passive oxide layer providing corrosion resistance across a wide range of environments. The fastener grades — including 304, 316L, 310, 321 and 904L — span from general-purpose food-industry service through to high-temperature furnace and highly corrosive acid plant applications. Stainless steel fasteners are the industry standard for applications requiring moderate corrosion resistance combined with good mechanical properties at an economical cost. Grade 316L (UNS S31603) with 2–3% molybdenum is the most widely specified grade for marine, pharmaceutical and chemical service, while SS 310 (UNS S31000) with 24–26% chromium is preferred for high-temperature furnace and heat-treating applications above 870°C.

Stainless Steel Fasteners Applications — Industries & Use Cases

Stainless Steel Fasteners from RealBolt Engineering Industries are specified by engineers and procurement teams across demanding industries where passive oxide film corrosion protection across food, pharmaceutical, marine, and high-temperature service is critical to fastener performance and service life. Primary end-use sectors for Stainless Steel Fasteners include food and dairy processing, pharmaceutical and biotech, marine and offshore, chemical processing, oil and gas, and power generation — click each industry below to see specific application details and recommended grades.
SS 304 and 316L fasteners are standard in food processing equipment, dairy vessels, brewery tanks and pharmaceutical reactors where cleanliness, passivation and CIP/SIP resistance are required. Surface finish Ra ≤ 0.8 µm available.
SS 316L (Mo 2–3%) is specified for marine deck fittings, boat hardware and coastal infrastructure. For higher chloride resistance, 904L (Mo 4–5%) is preferred in desalination plants and offshore modules.
SS 317L (Mo 3–4%) and 904L serve dilute acid environments where 316L is borderline. SS 316Ti and 347 resist sensitization in high-temperature welded assemblies. SS 310 is preferred in oxidizing high-temperature atmospheres to 1150°C.
ASTM A193 B8M (316L) stud bolts are standard for process flanges. A320 L7M serves cryogenic service to -196°C. SS 410 (A193 B6) provides higher strength for steam turbine and valve bolting.
SS 310 and 321 fasteners are used in radiant tube supports, furnace internals, steam reformers and heat-treating equipment where scaling resistance above 870°C is required.

Stainless Steel vs Duplex Steel vs Carbon Steel

This comparison table supports engineers and procurement managers in selecting between Stainless Steel, Duplex Steel, and Carbon Steel Fasteners based on chloride stress corrosion cracking resistance, maximum service temperature, minimum tensile strength, NACE MR0175 sour gas compliance, and relative material cost — from general-purpose Grade 304 through to offshore-qualified Duplex 2205. Use this data to make an informed alloy selection for your specific operating environment, design code, and budget — or contact RealBolt’s technical team for a project-specific recommendation.
Property SS 316L Duplex 2205 Carbon Steel 8.8
Max service temp 800°C 300°C 200°C
Chloride SCC resistance Moderate Excellent N/A
Tensile strength (min) 485 MPa 620 MPa 800 MPa
Density 7.98 g/cm3 7.82 g/cm3 7.85 g/cm3
Relative cost Medium Medium-High Lowest
NACE MR0175 compliant Conditional Yes No

Verdict: SS 316L is the standard for moderate corrosion resistance. Duplex 2205 is chosen for chloride-heavy or offshore environments. Carbon Steel 8.8 is the economical choice for dry indoor applications with applied protection.

SS 304 (UNS S30400) is the standard austenitic grade for general corrosion resistance. SS 316L (UNS S31603) adds 2–3% molybdenum and lower carbon, providing significantly better chloride and pitting corrosion resistance. Choose 316L for marine, chemical and pharmaceutical environments; 304 for dry, indoor or mild corrosion conditions.
SS 316L has limited seawater resistance — it can pit in stagnant seawater above 25°C. For continuous seawater immersion, we recommend Duplex 2205, Super Duplex 2507, Cupro Nickel 70/30 or Titanium Grade 2. For splash zone and intermittent seawater, SS 316L with regular maintenance is acceptable.
SS 316L retains tensile properties to approximately 800°C but is susceptible to sensitization (intergranular corrosion) between 425–860°C in the presence of corrosives. For continuous high-temperature service, use SS 321 (Ti-stabilised), SS 347 (Nb-stabilised) or SS 310 above 870°C.
Yes. We supply ASTM A193 Grade B8M stud bolts paired with ASTM A194 Grade 8M heavy hex nuts — the standard combination for process flanges in stainless steel service. Available in continuous thread, double-end and tap-end stud bolt configurations.
