SS 420 fasteners are a martensitic stainless steel containing approximately 12-14% chromium and 0.15% carbon, which are the primary elements responsible for its distinctive properties. The high carbon content enables significant hardening through heat treatment, allowing the material to achieve superior tensile and yield strength compared to austenitic grades. Chromium provides the fundamental passive oxide layer necessary for corrosion resistance, while the carbon-chromium balance allows precise control over hardness and wear characteristics during quenching and tempering operations, making this alloy highly versatile for demanding mechanical applications.
These compositional characteristics translate into fasteners with exceptional hardness, wear resistance and mechanical strength, ideal for high-stress applications requiring dimensional stability under load. Although corrosion resistance is moderate compared to austenitic grades, SS 420 performs well in mildly corrosive environments and offers good resistance to oxidation at elevated temperatures. Its combination of hardenability, strength and reasonable corrosion protection makes it particularly suitable for cutlery, surgical instruments, valve components and fastener applications demanding durability, edge retention and reliable performance under mechanical stress and moderate environmental exposure.
Specifications
SS 420 Fasteners offer a martensitic stainless steel specification defined by balanced mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, and precise dimensional tolerances for demanding applications. Their technical data typically emphasizes strength, hardness, and size consistency, making them suitable for components requiring reliable performance and accurate fit.
