Product Overview

What are SS 420 Nuts?

SS 420 nuts are high-strength, martensitic stainless steel fasteners manufactured from AISI 420 bar stock, conforming to ASTM A276 and ASTM A194 standards. With a minimum chromium content of 12%, SS 420 nuts offer a unique combination of moderate corrosion resistance and excellent mechanical strength, especially after heat treatment and hardening.

These nuts are magnetic, can be hardened up to 50 HRC, and are widely specified for applications requiring superior wear resistance, such as pump assemblies, valve bodies, and high-pressure flange connections. SS 420 nuts are commonly used in the petrochemical, power generation, and engineering sectors where both strength and moderate corrosion resistance are required.

Material Chemistry

SS 420 Chemical Composition

SS 420 Nuts are manufactured from an iron-chromium-nickel alloy with chromium (16–26%), nickel (8–28%), and grade-specific molybdenum additions per ASTM and ASTM A193/A194. Chromium content governs the self-healing passive oxide film; molybdenum (2–6%) enhances chloride pitting resistance; and carbon content determines sensitization risk in welded assemblies.

Chemical Composition per ASTM A276

ElementComposition (%)
Carbon (C)0.15% max
Chromium (Cr)12.0-14.0%
Manganese (Mn)1.00% max
Silicon (Si)1.00% max
Phosphorus (P)0.040% max

Why SS 420 Alloy Composition Matters for Nuts

High Carbon Content — Hardening Capability
The elevated carbon content in SS 420 enables the nuts to be heat treated and hardened up to 50 HRC, providing superior wear resistance and strength for high-load applications.
Chromium (12–14%) — Corrosion Resistance
Chromium forms a passive oxide layer, giving SS 420 nuts moderate resistance to atmospheric and mild chemical corrosion, suitable for pump, valve, and process equipment.
Machinability & Magnetic Properties
SS 420 is magnetic and can be machined to tight tolerances, making it ideal for precision nut manufacturing and applications requiring magnetic response.

?? Anti-galling: Use molybdenum-based anti-seize for SS 420 nuts. Lubricated values assume K=0.16. Avoid over-torquing to prevent thread galling.

Industry Applications

SS 420 Nuts Applications — Industries & End Uses

SS 420 Nuts from RealBolt are specified across food and dairy, pharmaceutical, marine, chemical processing, and oil and gas where very good corrosion resistance and 620 MPa tensile strength are required for reliable fastener performance. Click each industry below for detailed application examples.
SS 420 nuts are widely used in pump casings, valve bodies, and high-pressure sealing assemblies where high hardness and moderate corrosion resistance are required. Their wear resistance makes them ideal for gland packing and stuffing box applications.
Used in turbine casings, boiler flange connections, and steam line supports, SS 420 nuts withstand high mechanical loads and thermal cycling in power plants, especially where carbon steel nuts would corrode or soften.
SS 420 nuts are specified for process vessel closures, heat exchanger channel covers, and reactor manways in refineries and chemical plants, providing strength and moderate corrosion resistance in hydrocarbon and mild acid environments.
SS 420 nuts are used in jigs, fixtures, and machine tool assemblies where repeated tightening and loosening demand high wear resistance and dimensional stability.

SS 420 Nuts — Frequently Asked Questions

Browse expert answers to common questions about SS 420 Nuts from RealBolt — covering ASTM A193/A194 grades, chloride resistance, temperature limits, sensitization, sizes, and MTC documentation. Contact our technical team directly for project-specific guidance on SS 420 nuts selection and pricing.
SS 420 hex nuts are available to DIN 934 (metric), ISO 4032, and ASME B18.2.2 (inch hex and heavy hex). Thin nuts per DIN 439 and ISO 4035 are also available. Custom thread forms (BSW, BSF, Whitworth) can be supplied on request with a typical lead time of 10-15 working days.
Molybdenum-based anti-seize compound (such as Molykote 1000 or Loctite LB 8012) is recommended for SS 420 nuts to prevent galling and seizing. Apply to both threads and nut faces. Avoid copper-based anti-seize, as it may cause galvanic corrosion in some environments.
SS 420 nuts can be used up to 450°C in dry air, but prolonged exposure above 400°C may reduce mechanical properties due to tempering effects. For continuous high-temperature service, consider austenitic stainless grades. Consult our engineering team for application-specific advice.
No MOQ for standard sizes (M8-M36) available ex-stock. Custom sizes or non-standard threads may require a minimum order of 10 kg or 100 pieces. Bulk price breaks are available at 100, 500, and 1000 pieces.
