What is SS 310 / 310S?

SS 310 (UNS S31000) is a high-alloy austenitic stainless with Cr 24–26% and Ni 19–22% providing exceptional high-temperature oxidation resistance to 1150°C. The high nickel content prevents sigma phase embrittlement better than lower-nickel grades. Used in the annealed condition; no precipitation hardening. SS 310 fasteners are specified for industrial furnace hardware (fixtures, baskets, hangers), heat treatment equipment, glass lehr parts, ethylene cracker furnace components and kiln furniture where resistance to scaling and carburisation at 900–1150°C is required. Governed by ASTM A276 and ASTM A193.

Chemical Composition

SS 310 / 310S fasteners are austenitic stainless steel alloys engineered around high chromium (24-26%) and nickel (19-22%) content, which forms a stable, adherent oxide layer resisting oxidation at extreme temperatures. Controlled carbon levels, particularly in the 310S variant, minimize carbide precipitation and improve weldability. Silicon additions further enhance oxidation resistance, while manganese aids in deoxidation during manufacturing. This carefully balanced composition ensures excellent structural stability, sustained mechanical strength, and resistance to scaling even under prolonged thermal cycling, making the alloy suitable for demanding high-temperature fastening applications across multiple industries.

These fasteners deliver outstanding corrosion resistance in oxidizing, carburizing, and sulfurous environments, combined with reliable strength retention up to 1150°C. Their austenitic structure provides excellent toughness, ductility, and resistance to thermal fatigue, ensuring long service life in furnaces, heat exchangers, kilns, and exhaust systems. The non-magnetic properties and superior creep resistance further enhance performance in critical high-temperature assemblies. Combined with good weldability and dimensional stability, SS 310/310S fasteners offer dependable mechanical integrity, making them the preferred choice for engineers seeking durable, corrosion-resistant fastening solutions in extreme service conditions.

Applications

SS 310 / 310S Fastener Applications

SS 310 / 310S Fasteners from RealBolt Engineering Industries are specified wherever corrosion resistance, elevated-temperature strength, or chemical media compatibility is critical to fastener performance. Primary industries and end-uses for SS 310 / 310S fasteners include furnace parts, kilns, high-temperature oxidation to 1150 deg c.
SS 310 / 310S bolts, nuts and studs are widely used in furnace doors, burner assemblies, radiant tubes, heat treatment baskets and retorts where scaling resistance and strength at red heat are required.
These fasteners perform well in high-temperature refinery heaters, catalytic reformer equipment, flare systems and process piping supports exposed to oxidizing gases and thermal cycling.
310 and 310S stainless fasteners are selected for boiler components, kilns, preheaters, ducting, hot gas fans and expansion joint hardware where conventional 304 or 316 fasteners lose oxidation resistance.
SS 310 / 310S fasteners suit exhaust manifolds, incinerator internals, thermal oxidizers and pollution control equipment operating at elevated temperatures in oxidizing atmospheres.

Frequently Asked Questions About SS 310 / 310S Fasteners

Browse the questions below to get quick, expert answers about SS 310 / 310S Fasteners — covering alloy specifications (UNS S31000), applicable standards (ASTM A276), temperature ratings, corrosion performance, and how to source certified SS 310 / 310S fasteners from RealBolt Engineering Industries.
SS 310 is rated for continuous service to 1150°C in oxidising atmospheres. For intermittent (thermal cycling) service, the limit is 1038°C due to sigma phase formation risk on slow cooling through 593–871°C. Parts subject to frequent cycling should be removed from service for inspection if discolouration is excessive.
SS 310 has moderate carburisation resistance — significantly better than SS 304 and 316 but inferior to Inconel 601 or HP-alloy (Fe-Ni-Cr+Nb). For carburising endothermic furnace atmospheres above 900°C, Inconel 601 or HP-Micro-alloy components are preferred.
ASTM A276 covers SS 310 bar (Type 310S). ASTM A193 B8 class applies to high-strength studbolts. ASTM A240 for plate. All supplied solution-annealed with EN 10204 3.1 MTC.
SS 310’s high Ni (19–22%) suppresses sigma formation compared to lower-nickel grades, but sigma can still form after extended exposure at 593–871°C. Severely embrittled material shows ductility loss at room temperature. Solution annealing at 1065°C with rapid quench restores ductility.
