What is SS 316 / 316L / 316Ti?

SS 316 (UNS S31600) is the marine-grade austenitic stainless steel with Mo 2–3% adding chloride pitting resistance over SS 304. Mo raises the PREN to ~25, enabling service in coastal, marine and light chloride environments where 304 fails by pitting. Ti-stabilised grades (316Ti) or low-carbon 316L are available for welded assemblies. SS 316 fasteners are the workhorse for offshore topside equipment, chemical process equipment, pharmaceutical and food processing, coastal architecture and marine hardware. Governed by ASTM A193 B8M (bolts) and ASTM A194 Grade 8M (nuts).

Chemical Composition

SS 316/316L/316Ti fasteners derive their performance from a carefully balanced alloy composition comprising chromium, nickel and molybdenum. Chromium, present at 16-18%, forms a passive oxide layer that provides excellent corrosion resistance, while nickel (10-14%) stabilizes the austenitic structure and enhances ductility. Molybdenum, at 2-3%, significantly improves resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, particularly in chloride-rich environments. The low carbon variant, 316L, minimizes carbide precipitation during welding, whereas 316Ti incorporates titanium stabilization to prevent intergranular corrosion at elevated temperatures.

These metallurgical characteristics translate into fasteners with superior mechanical strength, exceptional resistance to marine and industrial corrosion, and reliable performance across a broad temperature range. The alloy maintains structural integrity in aggressive chemical processing, offshore, and pharmaceutical applications, resisting stress corrosion cracking and oxidation. Combined with good weldability and formability, SS 316/316L/316Ti fasteners deliver long-term durability, reduced maintenance costs, and dependable joint security, making them the preferred choice for demanding fastening applications requiring both strength and corrosion resistance.

Applications

SS 316 / 316L / 316Ti Fasteners Applications

SS 316 / 316L / 316Ti Fasteners from RealBolt Engineering Industries are specified wherever corrosion resistance, elevated-temperature strength, or chemical media compatibility is critical to fastener performance. Primary industries and end-uses for SS 316 / 316L / 316Ti fasteners include marine, pharmaceutical, chloride environments, chemical processing.
SS 316 and 316L fasteners are widely used for docks, piers, seawater splash-zone structures, coastal railings and marine hardware because molybdenum improves resistance to chloride pitting compared with SS 304.
316L fasteners are preferred for tanks, piping supports, reactors, skids, cleanroom equipment and hygienic process machinery where corrosion resistance, cleanability and reduced carbon content are important.
SS 316 / 316L / 316Ti bolts, studs and nuts are used on valves, flanges, pumps, heat exchangers and instrumentation exposed to hydrocarbons, condensates, mild chlorides and process chemicals.
SS 316Ti fasteners are selected for exhaust systems, thermal processing equipment and high-temperature assemblies where titanium stabilization helps resist chromium carbide sensitization during prolonged exposure around 425-815°C.

Frequently Asked Questions About SS 316 / 316L / 316Ti Fasteners

Browse the questions below to get quick, expert answers about SS 316 / 316L / 316Ti Fasteners — covering alloy specifications (UNS S31600), applicable standards (ASTM A193), temperature ratings, corrosion performance, and how to source certified SS 316 / 316L / 316Ti fasteners from RealBolt Engineering Industries.
PREN (Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number) for SS 316 is approximately 25. This means it resists pitting in seawater to about 25°C but fails above this temperature or in crevice conditions. Duplex 2205 (PREN ≥35) is required for fully submerged or stagnant seawater service.
SS 316L has C ≤0.03% to prevent sensitisation. For fasteners in bolted joints, the low-carbon grade is unnecessary. 316L is specified for welded nozzles and assemblies where the HAZ is susceptible to intergranular attack. We hold both grades ex-stock.
SS 316 is listed in NACE MR0175 for sour service in certain conditions (H2S partial pressure and temperature limits apply). Restricted to annealed condition, hardness ≤22 HRC. For general sour service fasteners, A193 B7 or ASTM A193 B8M is common.
ASTM A193 Grade B8M (SS 316 studs), ASTM A194 Grade 8M (SS 316 heavy hex nuts). ASTM A276 for SS 316 bar stock. All supplied with EN 10204 3.1 MTC including PMI for offshore projects.
