Product Overview

What are SS 316 / 316L / 316Ti Screws?

SS 316 / 316L / 316Ti screws are austenitic stainless steel fasteners manufactured from UNS S31600, S31603, and S31635 bar stock conforming to ASTM A276 and ASTM A479. The addition of molybdenum (2-3%) to the standard 18-8 chromium-nickel base significantly improves resistance to chloride pitting and crevice corrosion, making these screws the preferred choice across marine, chemical, and food processing industries.

The 316L variant limits carbon to 0.030% maximum, eliminating sensitisation risk in welded assemblies without post-weld heat treatment. The 316Ti grade stabilises the alloy with titanium (5×C minimum), providing superior resistance to intergranular corrosion at elevated temperatures. All three grades are dual-certified where chemistry permits, and are manufactured to DIN 933, ISO 4017, and ASME B18.6.3 dimensional standards for full interchangeability.

Material Chemistry

SS 316 / 316L / 316Ti Chemical Composition

SS 316 / 316L / 316Ti Screws are manufactured from an iron-chromium-nickel alloy with chromium (16–26%), nickel (8–28%), and grade-specific molybdenum additions per ASTM and ASTM A193/A194. Chromium content governs the self-healing passive oxide film; molybdenum (2–6%) enhances chloride pitting resistance; and carbon content determines sensitization risk in welded assemblies.

Why SS 316 / 316L / 316Ti Alloy Composition Matters for Screws

Mo (2–3%) — Chloride Pitting Resistance
Molybdenum raises the critical pitting temperature and PREN to approximately 25, providing meaningful resistance to chloride-induced pitting in coastal, marine, and mild chemical environments where standard 304 screws fail prematurely.
316L — Low Carbon for Weld Sensitisation Prevention
By capping carbon at 0.030%, 316L screws avoid chromium carbide precipitation at grain boundaries during welding or elevated-temperature service. This preserves intergranular corrosion resistance without requiring post-weld annealing — critical for screws used in welded assemblies.
316Ti — Titanium Stabilisation for High-Temperature Service
Titanium at 5×C minimum ties up free carbon as TiC, preventing sensitisation during prolonged exposure between 425°C and 815°C. 316Ti screws are specified for heat exchanger covers, furnace components, and exhaust flanges where 316L would sensitise over time.

Industry Applications

SS 316 / 316L / 316Ti Screws Applications — Industries & End Uses

SS 316 / 316L / 316Ti Screws from RealBolt are specified across food and dairy, pharmaceutical, marine, chemical processing, and oil and gas where very good corrosion resistance and 620 MPa tensile strength are required for reliable fastener performance. Click each industry below for detailed application examples.
SS 316 and 316L screws are the standard fastener specification for reactor vessel covers, heat exchanger channel heads, pump casing closures, and pipeline flanges handling dilute acids, chloride-bearing process streams, and pharmaceutical-grade fluids. 316L is preferred where welded assemblies are involved. FDA-compliant surface finishes available.
Hex head and socket head cap screws in SS 316 are specified for offshore platform grating, handrail systems, dock fittings, boat deck hardware, and seawater cooling system flanges. The molybdenum content provides meaningful resistance to chloride pitting in splash-zone and tidal environments where 304 screws corrode within months.
SS 316L screws with electropolished or passivated finishes are used throughout food processing conveyors, mixing vessels, filling machines, and CIP (clean-in-place) pipework. The low carbon content and smooth surface finish minimise bacterial adhesion and resist the aggressive caustic and acid cleaning cycles used in dairy, brewing, and meat processing facilities.
Flange screws and machine screws in SS 316 are specified for reverse osmosis membrane housings, pressure filter vessels, chemical dosing systems, and clarifier mechanisms. Resistance to chlorinated water and hypochlorite dosing solutions makes 316 the minimum acceptable grade for potable water contact applications per BS EN 1452 and WRAS approval requirements.

All three grades share the same 16-18% chromium, 10-14% nickel, and 2-3% molybdenum base composition. The key differences are carbon content and stabilisation. SS 316 is the standard grade with carbon up to 0.08%. SS 316L limits carbon to 0.030% maximum, preventing sensitisation in welded assemblies without post-weld heat treatment – making it the preferred choice for most fabricated equipment. SS 316Ti adds titanium at a minimum of 5×C, which stabilises the alloy against intergranular corrosion during prolonged service between 425°C and 815°C. Where chemistry qualifies, 316 and 316L are dual-certified and fully interchangeable. 316Ti is a distinct grade and cannot be dual-certified with 316L.
SS 316 screws provide good resistance to seawater splash and atmospheric marine exposure, but are not recommended for continuous full seawater immersion, particularly in crevice-prone geometries such as under screw heads or in threaded joints. In immersed seawater, crevice corrosion can initiate on 316 at temperatures above approximately 15°C. For continuous seawater immersion, super duplex (UNS S32750) or nickel alloy fasteners such as Alloy 625 are the correct specification. For coastal and splash-zone applications, 316 performs reliably with correct installation and periodic inspection.
Standard supply is mill finish (as-machined). Additional finishes available include passivation per ASTM A967 or ASTM A380 (removes free iron, restores passive oxide layer), electropolishing (reduces surface roughness Ra to below 0.4 µm, improves corrosion resistance and cleanability – specified for pharmaceutical and food contact applications), and bright annealing. Black oxide is not recommended for 316 as it reduces corrosion resistance. All surface treatments are documented on the MTC.
Stainless steel 316 screws can be used with aluminium, but galvanic corrosion of the aluminium is a risk in wet or marine environments due to the electrochemical potential difference between the two metals. In dry indoor environments, direct contact is generally acceptable. In outdoor or marine environments, isolate the screw from the aluminium using PTFE washers, neoprene gaskets, or an isolating sleeve, and apply a compatible sealant at the joint. Aluminium will be the sacrificial anode in the galvanic couple, so protection of the aluminium is the primary concern, not the stainless screw.
