Product Overview

What are SS 316 / 316L / 316Ti Nuts?

SS 316 / 316L / 316Ti nuts are austenitic stainless steel fasteners manufactured from UNS S31600, S31603, and S31635 bar stock conforming to ASTM A276 and ASTM A479. The addition of molybdenum (2.0-3.0%) to the standard 18-8 chromium-nickel base significantly improves resistance to chloride pitting and crevice corrosion, making these grades the preferred choice across marine, chemical, and pharmaceutical industries.

Grade 316L limits carbon to 0.030% maximum, eliminating sensitisation risk in welded assemblies without post-weld heat treatment. Grade 316Ti incorporates titanium stabilisation (5×C minimum) to prevent intergranular corrosion in high-temperature service up to 800°C. All three grades are manufactured to ASTM A194 Grade 8M and are fully interchangeable in most ASME pressure vessel and piping applications.

Material Chemistry

SS 316 / 316L / 316Ti Chemical Composition

SS 316 / 316L / 316Ti Nuts are manufactured from an iron-chromium-nickel alloy with chromium (16–26%), nickel (8–28%), and grade-specific molybdenum additions per ASTM and ASTM A193/A194. Chromium content governs the self-healing passive oxide film; molybdenum (2–6%) enhances chloride pitting resistance; and carbon content determines sensitization risk in welded assemblies.

Why SS 316 / 316L / 316Ti Alloy Composition Matters for Nuts

Mo (2.0–3.0%) — Chloride Pitting Resistance
Molybdenum raises the pitting resistance equivalent number (PREN) of 316-series nuts to approximately 24–26, providing meaningful resistance to chloride-induced pitting in coastal, marine, and chemical environments where standard 304 nuts fail rapidly.
316L — Low Carbon for Weld-Zone Integrity
By capping carbon at 0.030%, 316L nuts resist sensitisation in the heat-affected zone of welded assemblies. This eliminates intergranular corrosion at grain boundaries without requiring post-weld annealing, making 316L the default choice for fabricated pressure vessels and piping systems.
316Ti — Titanium Stabilisation for Elevated Temperature
Titanium in 316Ti preferentially combines with carbon, preventing chromium carbide precipitation at grain boundaries during sustained service between 425°C and 800°C. This makes 316Ti nuts the correct selection for heat exchanger flanges, furnace hardware, and exhaust system connections where 316L would sensitise over time.

Industry Applications

SS 316 / 316L / 316Ti Nuts Applications — Industries & End Uses

SS 316 / 316L / 316Ti Nuts from RealBolt are specified across food and dairy, pharmaceutical, marine, chemical processing, and oil and gas where very good corrosion resistance and 620 MPa tensile strength are required for reliable fastener performance. Click each industry below for detailed application examples.
SS 316 / 316L / 316Ti hex nuts and heavy hex nuts are the standard specification for ASME B16.5 flange connections in chemical reactors, distillation columns, and heat exchangers handling chloride-bearing process streams, dilute acids, and organic solvents. 316L is preferred for welded nozzle connections to avoid sensitisation.
Hex nuts, flange nuts, and coupling nuts in SS 316 are specified for offshore platform deck fittings, jetty structural connections, boat building hardware, and coastal architectural metalwork where salt spray and tidal immersion demand superior chloride resistance over standard 304 stainless.
SS 316L nuts are mandatory in FDA-regulated pharmaceutical manufacturing, food processing, and dairy equipment where surface cleanliness, resistance to cleaning chemicals (CIP/SIP), and freedom from contamination are critical. Low carbon content prevents corrosion in steam-sterilised assemblies.
Hex nuts and coupling nuts in SS 316 / 316L are used throughout reverse osmosis membrane housings, pressure filter vessels, chlorination dosing systems, and seawater intake pipework where molybdenum content provides resistance to chloride pitting that would rapidly attack 304-grade fasteners.

The three grades share the same chromium-nickel-molybdenum base but differ in carbon content and stabilisation. SS 316 is the standard grade suitable for most general applications. SS 316L limits carbon to 0.030% maximum, preventing sensitisation in welded assemblies and making it the preferred choice for fabricated pressure vessels and piping. SS 316Ti incorporates titanium stabilisation (minimum 5×C) to prevent intergranular corrosion during sustained service between 425°C and 800°C – the correct selection for heat exchanger flanges and furnace hardware where 316L would sensitise over time.
SS 316 / 316L / 316Ti nuts for high-pressure and high-temperature bolted connections are manufactured to ASTM A194 Grade 8M, which specifies mechanical properties, hardness limits (max 35 HRC), and proof load requirements. The bar stock used to manufacture the nuts conforms to ASTM A276 or ASTM A479. For metric nuts, dimensional standards are DIN 934 (standard hex), DIN 936 (thin hex), and ISO 4032 / ISO 4033. Inch-series nuts conform to ASME B18.2.2 for dimensions.
Galling is the primary installation risk with austenitic stainless steel nuts. Always apply a molybdenum disulphide (MoS2) paste, PTFE-based thread lubricant, or a dedicated anti-galling compound such as Jet-Lube SS-30 or Molykote 1000 to both the thread and the bearing face before assembly. Reduce torque values by approximately 20% compared to dry assembly values. Never run stainless nuts down at high speed with an impact wrench – use a torque wrench and tighten in stages. Pairing SS 316 nuts with bolts of a different surface finish or hardness also reduces galling risk.
Yes – SS 316L is the preferred grade for FDA-regulated food processing, dairy, beverage, and pharmaceutical manufacturing environments. The low carbon content prevents corrosion in steam-sterilised (SIP) and chemically cleaned (CIP) assemblies. Surface finish options including electropolishing (Ra = 0.8 µm) are available to meet hygienic design requirements under EHEDG and 3-A Sanitary Standards. All material is supplied with EN 10204 3.1 MTC confirming chemical composition and mechanical properties.
