What is SS 321?

SS 321 (UNS S32100) is a titanium-stabilised austenitic stainless steel. Ti addition (5×C% minimum) preferentially combines with carbon to form TiC, preventing Cr23C6 precipitation at grain boundaries during welding or exposure to 425–870°C sensitisation range. This eliminates intergranular corrosion in the HAZ without needing ultra-low carbon. SS 321 fasteners are used in aircraft exhaust manifolds, high-temperature chemical plant bolting, cryogenic equipment, expansion joints and welded assemblies operating in the sensitisation temperature range. Governed by ASTM A276 and ASTM A193 B8.

Chemical Composition

SS 321 fasteners derive their performance from a carefully balanced composition of chromium, nickel and titanium. Chromium, present at 17-19%, forms a passive oxide layer that provides robust corrosion resistance, while nickel at 9-12% stabilizes the austenitic structure and enhances ductility and toughness. The distinguishing element is titanium, added at a minimum of five times the carbon content, which stabilizes carbon and prevents chromium carbide precipitation during welding or elevated temperature exposure, thereby preserving intergranular corrosion resistance.

This titanium stabilization makes SS 321 fasteners particularly suited for high-temperature service, offering excellent resistance to sensitization, oxidation and creep up to 800°C. The alloy maintains strong mechanical performance, good weldability and reliable corrosion resistance in industrial, chemical and marine environments. These characteristics make SS 321 fasteners the preferred choice for exhaust systems, aerospace components, heat exchangers and other applications demanding long-term strength and stability under thermal cycling and corrosive conditions.

Applications

SS 321 Fasteners Applications

SS 321 Fasteners from RealBolt Engineering Industries are specified wherever corrosion resistance, elevated-temperature strength, or chemical media compatibility is critical to fastener performance. Primary industries and end-uses for SS 321 fasteners include ti-stabilized; aerospace pressure vessels, weld decay prevention.
SS 321 bolts, studs and nuts are widely used in exhaust headers, expansion joints, turbocharger connections and manifold assemblies where cyclic heating can expose fasteners to sensitizing temperatures.
The titanium stabilized structure makes SS 321 fasteners suitable for furnace parts, heater supports, reformer components and piping hardware exposed to hot hydrocarbons and intermittent shutdown cycles.
SS 321 screws and threaded rods are selected for heat exchanger shells, tube supports, kiln equipment and thermal processing fixtures that require stable austenitic stainless performance at elevated temperature.
For sanitary piping supports, washdown equipment and clean utility skids, SS 321 fasteners provide good oxidation resistance, cleanability and better weld area stability than non stabilized 304 in elevated temperature service.

Frequently Asked Questions About SS 321 Fasteners

Browse the questions below to get quick, expert answers about SS 321 Fasteners — covering alloy specifications (UNS S32100), applicable standards (ASTM A276), temperature ratings, corrosion performance, and how to source certified SS 321 fasteners from RealBolt Engineering Industries.
SS 321 uses Ti stabilisation — Ti binds carbon before Cr23C6 can form in the HAZ. This protects both parent metal and weld HAZ at service temperatures up to 870°C. SS 316L relies on low carbon (≤0.03%) which gives no protection above 427°C in long-term service.
Yes. SS 321 retains impact toughness to -196°C with no ductile-to-brittle transition. Used for LNG, LOX and liquid nitrogen vessel fasteners. Check Charpy test data at -196°C in MTC for cryogenic qualification.
ASTM A276 (bar), ASTM A193 B8 (studs), ASTM A479 (bar for pressure fittings). All solution-annealed, stabilise-annealed or both per customer specification, with EN 10204 3.1 MTC.
Continuous service to 870°C (1600°F) in oxidising atmospheres. Ti-carbide is stable to 900°C. Above this, TiC dissolves and sensitisation risk returns — specify Inconel 601 or SS 310S above 900°C.
