What is Inconel 800?

Inconel 800 (UNS N08800) is a nickel-iron-chromium alloy with Ni 30–35%, Cr 19–23% and Fe balance, providing high-temperature oxidation and carburisation resistance with good creep strength at 600–900°C. Al 0.15–0.60% and Ti 0.15–0.60% additions improve high-temperature stability. It offers Inconel-class performance at lower cost than fully nickel-based alloys. Inconel 800 fasteners are used in ethylene cracking furnace tube hangers, steam superheater header bolts, hydrogen generation plant structural hardware and nuclear steam generator supports. Covered by ASTM B408 for bar stock. For superior creep rupture above 600°C, Inconel 800H (higher controlled carbon) is the preferred specification.

Inconel 800 Fasteners Chemical Composition

Inconel 800 fasteners derive their exceptional performance from a balanced composition of nickel, chromium and iron. Nickel content, typically around 30-35%, provides resistance to stress corrosion cracking and stabilizes the austenitic structure at elevated temperatures. Chromium, present at approximately 19-23%, forms a protective oxide layer that enhances resistance to oxidation and general corrosion. Controlled additions of aluminum and titanium contribute to solid solution strengthening and improve high-temperature stability, while carbon content is restricted to minimize sensitization and intergranular attack during prolonged thermal exposure.

This carefully engineered composition delivers outstanding resistance to oxidation, carburization and sulfidation, making Inconel 800 fasteners ideal for demanding high-temperature environments including heat exchangers, furnace components and chemical processing equipment. Their excellent mechanical strength, combined with superior corrosion resistance across a wide temperature range, ensures long-term reliability under cyclic thermal loading. These characteristics make Inconel 800 fasteners a preferred choice for critical joints requiring durability, dimensional stability and resistance to harsh operating conditions.

Applications

Inconel 800 Fastener Applications

Inconel 800 Fasteners from RealBolt Engineering Industries are specified wherever corrosion resistance, elevated-temperature strength, or chemical media compatibility is critical to fastener performance. Primary industries and end-uses for Inconel 800 fasteners include ethylene cracking furnaces, steam superheaters, heat exchangers.
Inconel 800 bolts, studs and nuts are widely used in furnace retorts, radiant tubes, baskets, muffles, burner assemblies and fixtures where stainless steel fasteners may scale or embrittle during repeated thermal cycling.
Alloy 800 fasteners are suitable for reformer components, ethylene pyrolysis equipment, hydrocarbon processing hardware and high-temperature piping supports exposed to carburizing or mildly oxidizing atmospheres.
These fasteners are used in boiler equipment, superheater supports, heat exchangers, thermal oxidizers and industrial heaters where dimensional stability and oxidation resistance at elevated temperature are required.
Inconel 800 fastening systems provide reliable service in equipment exposed to oxidizing chemicals, nitriding environments and chloride-bearing process conditions where nickel alloy resistance helps reduce stress-corrosion cracking risk.

Frequently Asked Questions About Inconel 800 Fasteners

Browse the questions below to get quick, expert answers about Inconel 800 Fasteners — covering alloy specifications (UNS N08800), applicable standards (ASTM B408), temperature ratings, corrosion performance, and how to source certified Inconel 800 fasteners from RealBolt Engineering Industries.
Inconel 800H (N08810) has controlled carbon (0.05–0.10% vs ≤0.10%) and minimum grain size (ASTM No.5 or coarser), maximising high-temperature creep rupture strength. The controlled microstructure of 800H is critical for steam reformer and ethylene cracker applications above 600°C.
ASTM B408 covers Inconel 800 bar and rod. ASTM B409 covers plate. ASME SB-408 is the pressure-vessel code equivalent. All supplied solution-annealed with EN 10204 3.1 MTC.
Inconel 800 is rated to 1000°C for continuous oxidising service. For temperatures above 1000°C, Inconel 601 (Al-enhanced) or Nimonic alloys are required. For critical creep-loaded fasteners above 600°C, specify Inconel 800H.
Yes. Inconel 800 is used in steam-methane reformer furnace hardware where the atmosphere is H2+CO+H2O at high temperature. It is not susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement at high temperature. For ambient-temperature H2 pressure vessel bolting, A193 B7 is standard.
