What is Cupro Nickel 90/10?

Cupro-Nickel 90/10 (UNS C70600, CuNi10Fe1Mn) is a copper-nickel alloy with Ni 9–11% and Fe 1.0–2.0%, providing excellent resistance to seawater biofouling, erosion-corrosion and dezincification. The iron addition improves erosion resistance in high-velocity seawater. Non-magnetic, good cold-formability, tensile strength 380 MPa. 90/10 CuNi fasteners are used in marine heat exchanger flanges, desalination plant, offshore seawater system flanges, naval ship piping and marine condensers where the copper-nickel matrix’s natural antifouling properties reduce marine biological attachment without biocide treatment. Governed by ASTM B122 for bar and ASTM B151 for rod.

Cupro Nickel 90/10 Chemical Composition

Cupro Nickel 90/10 fasteners derive their distinctive properties from a controlled alloy composition of 90% copper and 10% nickel, with small additions of iron and manganese. The nickel content enhances corrosion resistance and mechanical strength, while iron improves resistance to erosion and impingement attack in flowing seawater. Manganese contributes to deoxidation and improves hot working characteristics. This balanced composition gives the alloy its characteristic reddish-brown appearance along with a stable, single-phase microstructure that resists dezincification and stress corrosion cracking commonly seen in brass alloys.

These alloying elements combine to deliver outstanding resistance to marine corrosion, biofouling and cavitation, making Cupro Nickel 90/10 fasteners the preferred choice for offshore, shipbuilding and desalination applications. The alloy maintains good mechanical performance and ductility across a wide temperature range, while remaining weldable and easy to fabricate. Its excellent thermal conductivity and resistance to saltwater degradation ensure long-term reliability in critical fastening applications exposed to harsh marine environments.

Applications

Cupro Nickel 90/10 Fasteners Applications

Cupro Nickel 90/10 Fasteners from RealBolt Engineering Industries are specified wherever corrosion resistance, elevated-temperature strength, or chemical media compatibility is critical to fastener performance. Primary industries and end-uses for Cupro Nickel 90/10 fasteners include marine piping, heat exchangers, naval condensers, offshore platforms.
Used for hull fittings, seawater piping supports, pump hardware, valve bolting, deck equipment and ship repair assemblies where stainless steel may suffer crevice corrosion in chloride rich environments.
Selected for splash zone fasteners, platform seawater systems, firewater lines and instrument brackets because 90/10 copper nickel resists marine corrosion and performs well in aerated seawater.
Suitable for fastening tube sheets, condenser components, evaporators and brine handling equipment where resistance to saline water, erosion corrosion and scaling related fouling is important.
Applied in piers, jetties, intake screens, seawater pumps, strainers and coastal utility systems requiring durable non sparking, low maintenance copper nickel fasteners.

Frequently Asked Questions About Cupro Nickel 90/10 Fasteners

Browse the questions below to get quick, expert answers about Cupro Nickel 90/10 Fasteners — covering alloy specifications (UNS C70600/WNR 2.0872), applicable standards (ASTM B151), temperature ratings, corrosion performance, and how to source certified Cupro Nickel 90/10 fasteners from RealBolt Engineering Industries.
90/10 CuNi forms a protective Cu2O/CuO film in seawater that is naturally antifouling — marine organisms cannot attach to copper surfaces. It resists erosion-corrosion in flowing seawater to 3 m/s. No biocide is needed, reducing operating cost and environmental impact versus titanium or stainless coated systems.
ASTM B151 covers C70600 (90/10 CuNi) rod, bar and shapes. ASTM B122 covers plate. ASME SB-151 for pressure-vessel code. MIL-C-15726 for naval specification. All supplied with EN 10204 3.1 MTC.
Yes, up to approximately 3 m/s in piping. Above 3 m/s, erosion of the protective film occurs — specify 70/30 CuNi (to 4.5 m/s) or titanium for pump discharge and high-velocity service. Crevice corrosion under gaskets in stagnant seawater is a risk — avoid stagnant conditions.
70/30 (C71500) has Ni 29–33% vs 9–11% for 90/10. Higher nickel provides: (1) better seawater velocity resistance (to 4.5 m/s), (2) better corrosion resistance in polluted seawater, (3) higher strength (415 vs 380 MPa). 70/30 costs ~15% more than 90/10 and is used for the most demanding marine service.
