What is Nimonic 90?

Nimonic 90 (UNS N07090) adds Co 15–21% to the Nimonic 80A base (Ni-Cr-Ti-Al), raising the γ’ solvus temperature and improving high-temperature strength and creep rupture life. Co solid-solution strengthening and its effect on γ’ stability extends the useful service temperature to approximately 920°C. Tensile strength 1241 MPa. Nimonic 90 fasteners and disc bolts are specified for advanced gas turbine hot section components, high-temperature steam plant bolting and aerospace engine structural hardware operating at 800–920°C where Nimonic 80A is marginal. Governed by BS 3076 NA21.

Nimonic 90 Fasteners Chemical Composition

Nimonic 90 Fasteners derive their strength from a nickel-chromium-cobalt matrix strengthened by additions of titanium and aluminium, which form gamma-prime precipitates responsible for exceptional high-temperature strength. Chromium content, typically around 19-21%, provides oxidation and corrosion resistance, while cobalt enhances matrix stability at elevated temperatures. These carefully balanced alloying elements enable the material to retain structural integrity, creep resistance and fatigue strength even under prolonged thermal and mechanical stress, making it ideal for demanding fastening applications.

Engineering benefits include outstanding resistance to oxidation, corrosion and creep at temperatures exceeding 800°C, combined with excellent mechanical performance under cyclic loading. Nimonic 90 Fasteners maintain tensile and yield strength across a wide temperature range, ensuring reliable clamping force and dimensional stability in aerospace, gas turbine and high-temperature industrial applications where standard steel or stainless fasteners would fail.

Applications

Nimonic 90 Fasteners Applications

Nimonic 90 Fasteners from RealBolt Engineering Industries are specified wherever corrosion resistance, elevated-temperature strength, or chemical media compatibility is critical to fastener performance. Primary industries and end-uses for Nimonic 90 fasteners include ni-cr-co; turbine discs, casings; stress service up to 920 deg c.
Nimonic 90 fasteners are widely selected for turbine casings, combustor hardware, exhaust frames and hot-section auxiliary equipment where creep strength and oxidation resistance must be maintained under prolonged thermal exposure.
Bolts, studs and nuts made from Nimonic 90 perform well in furnace fixtures, radiant tube supports, burner assemblies and retort equipment exposed to cyclic heat and oxidizing atmospheres.
The alloy is suitable for steam and gas power plant components, expansion joints, high-temperature flanges and exhaust connections that require reliable clamping force at elevated temperature.
Nimonic 90 fasteners support aerospace, motorsport and advanced engineering assemblies where low relaxation, hot strength and dependable performance are required in compact, highly stressed designs.

Frequently Asked Questions About Nimonic 90 Fasteners

Browse the questions below to get quick, expert answers about Nimonic 90 Fasteners — covering alloy specifications (UNS N07090), applicable standards (BS 3076), temperature ratings, corrosion performance, and how to source certified Nimonic 90 fasteners from RealBolt Engineering Industries.
Cobalt raises the γ’ solvus temperature, stabilising γ’ precipitates at higher temperatures where they would otherwise dissolve in 80A. Co solid-solution strengthening also improves hot hardness. The net effect is better creep rupture strength at 800–920°C, making 90 preferred for advanced turbine designs with higher firing temperatures.
BS 3076 NA21 (rod and bar), AMS 5829 (bar and wire), DTD 5049 (aerospace forgings). DIN equivalent: 2.4969, EN 10302. All supplied solution-annealed and aged per AMS 5829 heat treatment, with EN 10204 3.1 MTC including hardness survey and grain size.
Yes. For advanced supercritical steam turbine bolting above 600°C where P91/P92 creep strength is insufficient, Nimonic 90 provides the necessary creep rupture life. Used in high-pressure turbine casing bolts and steam valve spindle nuts in the most advanced coal-fired power plant.
Solution anneal: 1080°C/8h, AC or OQ. Precipitation age: 700°C/16h, AC. Same protocol as Nimonic 80A. The cobalt doesn’t change the heat treatment significantly. Full heat treatment records with time-temperature charts provided on MTC for aerospace and power generation applications.
