What is Nimonic 105?

Nimonic 105 (UNS N13021) is a high-cobalt, high-aluminium precipitation-hardenable Ni-Co-Cr alloy with Al 4.5–5.5% and Co 18–22%, providing one of the highest γ’ volume fractions and creep rupture strengths in the wrought Nimonic series. Maximum service temperature approximately 950°C for sustained bolted-joint creep applications. Nimonic 105 fasteners and turbine disc bolts are specified for the hottest sections of industrial and aero gas turbines, where Nimonic 80A and 90 are insufficient. Also used in high-pressure steam plant bolting requiring maximum creep rupture at 700–900°C. Governed by BS 3076 NA22.

Nimonic 105 Fasteners Chemical Composition

Nimonic 105 Fasteners derive their exceptional high-temperature performance from a carefully balanced composition of nickel, chromium, cobalt, molybdenum, aluminium and titanium. Chromium provides oxidation and corrosion resistance through the formation of a stable protective oxide layer, while cobalt enhances matrix strength at elevated temperatures. Molybdenum contributes solid solution strengthening, improving creep resistance, and the combined addition of aluminium and titanium promotes precipitation of the gamma prime phase, which is the primary strengthening mechanism responsible for the alloy’s outstanding mechanical stability under prolonged thermal exposure.

This carefully engineered composition delivers superior creep rupture strength, excellent resistance to oxidation and thermal fatigue, and reliable mechanical performance at temperatures approaching 950°C. These characteristics make Nimonic 105 Fasteners ideally suited for demanding fastening applications in gas turbines, aerospace engines and high-temperature industrial equipment, where consistent clamping force, dimensional stability and resistance to relaxation are essential for long-term operational safety and reliability.

Applications

Nimonic 105 Fasteners Applications

Nimonic 105 Fasteners from RealBolt Engineering Industries are specified wherever corrosion resistance, elevated-temperature strength, or chemical media compatibility is critical to fastener performance. Primary industries and end-uses for Nimonic 105 fasteners include higher co/mo than 90; turbine blades and fasteners above 950 deg c.
Nimonic 105 bolts and studs are used around combustion cases, turbine casings, nozzle guide vane assemblies and exhaust hardware where clamp load must be retained during long exposure to hot gases.
The alloy is selected for aircraft engine fasteners that need high strength-to-weight performance, oxidation resistance and stable mechanical properties during repeated thermal cycling.
Nimonic 105 screws, nuts and washers provide reliable fastening for radiant tubes, retorts, muffles, fixtures and doors operating beyond the practical limits of stainless steel bolting.
It is used for high-temperature flanges, expansion joints, burner assemblies and reformer or incinerator equipment where creep, relaxation and oxidation are primary design concerns.

Frequently Asked Questions About Nimonic 105 Fasteners

Browse the questions below to get quick, expert answers about Nimonic 105 Fasteners — covering alloy specifications (UNS N13021), applicable standards (BS 3076), temperature ratings, corrosion performance, and how to source certified Nimonic 105 fasteners from RealBolt Engineering Industries.
Nimonic 105 combines the highest Al content (4.5–5.5%) in the wrought Nimonic series with high Co (18–22%) and Mo (4.5–5.5%). The high Al creates a very high γ’ volume fraction (approximately 40%) providing maximum precipitation strengthening. Mo provides solid-solution strengthening of the matrix. Together they give the best creep rupture life above 850°C.
BS 3076 NA22 (rod and bar), AMS 5712 (bar), DTD 5032 (aerospace), DIN 2.4634. EN 10302 covers high-temperature Ni alloys. All supplied solution-annealed and aged with EN 10204 3.1 MTC, full chemical, tensile, hardness and grain size. PMI for Co and Mo verification.
Yes. High γ’ volume fraction and work-hardening make Nimonic 105 significantly more difficult to machine than 80A or 90. Requires sharp carbide tooling, low feed rates, adequate cooling and no interrupted cuts. Thread-rolling (cold) is preferred over thread-cutting for fatigue resistance. Allow longer lead times for machined fasteners.
Solution anneal: 1150–1185°C/4h, AC. Primary age: 1050°C/4h, AC. Secondary age: 850°C/16h, AC. Two-stage ageing produces bimodal γ’ distribution for optimum creep properties. Full heat treatment records with pyrometer calibration certificates on MTC for gas turbine applications.
