Product Overview

What are Hastelloy B2 Screws?

Hastelloy B2 screws are nickel-molybdenum alloy fasteners machined from UNS N10665 bar stock conforming to ASTM B335. The alloy’s exceptionally high molybdenum content (26-30%) delivers outstanding resistance to hydrochloric acid at all concentrations and temperatures, including boiling HCl – a performance level unmatched by any stainless steel or standard nickel alloy.

Hastelloy B2 screws are specified for chemical process equipment, reactor closures, and distillation column internals where reducing acid environments would rapidly corrode alternative fastener materials. The alloy’s low carbon and silicon content minimises grain boundary carbide precipitation, ensuring corrosion resistance is maintained in the heat-affected zone of welded assemblies.

Material Chemistry

Hastelloy B2 Chemical Composition

Hastelloy B2 Screws derive their exceptional acid corrosion resistance from a precisely controlled nickel-molybdenum-chromium composition per ASTM. High molybdenum and tungsten content suppresses pitting and reducing-acid attack; ultra-low carbon (0.01% max) eliminates sensitization risk in welded assemblies. Full elemental composition is certified in the EN 10204 MTC supplied with every Hastelloy B2 screws order from RealBolt.

Why Hastelloy B2 Alloy Composition Matters for Screws

Mo (26–30%) — Reducing Acid Resistance
The exceptionally high molybdenum content is the defining characteristic of Hastelloy B2. It provides outstanding resistance to hydrochloric acid at all concentrations up to boiling point, as well as sulphuric, phosphoric, and acetic acids in reducing conditions — environments that destroy standard stainless steel screws within hours.
Ultra-Low C & Si — Grain Boundary Stability
Carbon is held to 0.02% max and silicon to 0.10% max. This dramatically reduces the risk of grain boundary carbide and silicide precipitation during fabrication and welding, preserving the alloy's corrosion resistance in the heat-affected zone without mandatory post-weld heat treatment.
Nickel-Rich Matrix — Structural Integrity in Reducing Environments
The nickel-dominant base (65%+) ensures Hastelloy B2 screws maintain mechanical integrity in strongly reducing chemical environments where oxidising agents are absent. This makes them the preferred fastener choice for HCl synthesis, acid pickling, and pharmaceutical reactor closures.

Industry Applications

Hastelloy B2 Screws Applications — Industries & End Uses

Hastelloy B2 Screws from RealBolt are specified across chemical processing, pharmaceutical, oil and gas, and FGD where excellent corrosion resistance and 800 MPa tensile strength are required for reliable fastener performance. Click each industry below for detailed application examples. Select an industry below to see specific Hastelloy B2 screws application details and RealBolt stock availability.
Hastelloy B2 screws are the industry-standard fastener for HCl synthesis furnace closures, absorption column internals, and acid storage tank cover plates. The alloy withstands hydrochloric acid at all concentrations up to and including boiling point – conditions that cause rapid corrosion failure in stainless steel and even Hastelloy C276 screws.
Socket head cap screws and hex screws in Hastelloy B2 are specified for reactor closure flanges, agitator shaft seals, and internal baffle attachment in pharmaceutical API synthesis and fine chemical production where reducing acid media, including acetic, formic, and dilute sulphuric acid, are present at elevated temperatures.
Hastelloy B2 screws secure immersion basket frames, tank liner attachment rails, and heat exchanger cover plates in steel and titanium pickling lines operating in hot HCl and mixed acid baths. Their resistance to reducing acid attack eliminates the frequent fastener replacement cycles associated with stainless steel hardware.
In sulphuric acid service below 60% concentration and at moderate temperatures, Hastelloy B2 screws outperform Hastelloy C276 due to the higher molybdenum content. They are used in dilute H2SO4 reactor closures, acid cooler channel covers, and pump casing assembly in fertiliser and mining chemical plants.

Hastelloy B2 screws are available in socket head cap screws (DIN 912 / ISO 4762), hex head screws (DIN 933 / ISO 4017), pan head machine screws (DIN 7985), countersunk screws (DIN 965), set screws (DIN 913-916), and low-head socket cap screws (DIN 7984). Inch equivalents are manufactured per ASME B18.3 and ASME B18.6.3. Custom drive types including Torx and hex flange are available on request with 15 working day lead time.
No – Hastelloy B2 is specifically designed for reducing acid environments. In the presence of oxidising agents such as ferric chloride, cupric chloride, nitric acid, or wet chlorine, the alloy’s corrosion resistance drops sharply. For mixed or oxidising acid service, Hastelloy C276 (UNS N10276) or Hastelloy C22 (UNS N06022) screws are the correct specification. Always confirm the process chemistry before selecting B2 fasteners.
Hastelloy B2 screws are rated to 425°C in reducing service environments. Above this temperature, the alloy becomes susceptible to precipitation of Ni4Mo intermetallic phases, which can cause embrittlement and reduced corrosion resistance. For high-temperature reducing acid service above 425°C, consult our engineering team for alternative alloy recommendations. The alloy should not be used in the 260-430°C range for prolonged periods without specific metallurgical review.
Use nickel-based anti-seize compound (Molykote P-37, Jet-Lube KOPR-KOTE Pure Nickel, or equivalent) on threads and bearing faces. Reduce torque values by approximately 20% compared to dry assembly. Never use copper-based or zinc-based anti-seize on Hastelloy B2 screws – the galvanic potential difference in acid environments accelerates localised corrosion at the thread contact zone and can cause premature fastener failure.
