Product Overview

What are Hastelloy B2 Studs?

Hastelloy B2 studs are nickel-molybdenum alloy fasteners manufactured from UNS N10665 bar stock conforming to ASTM B335. The alloy’s exceptionally high molybdenum content (26-30%) delivers outstanding resistance to hydrochloric acid at all concentrations and temperatures, including boiling HCl – a performance level unmatched by any stainless steel or standard nickel alloy fastener.

Hastelloy B2 studs are specified in chemical process industries where reducing acid environments, hydrogen chloride gas, and sulfuric acid at moderate concentrations demand a fastener material that will not corrode under flange bolt loads. The alloy conforms to NACE MR0175 hardness limits and is widely used in reactor closures, distillation column flanges, and acid storage vessel nozzle connections worldwide.

Material Chemistry

Hastelloy B2 Chemical Composition

Hastelloy B2 Studs derive their exceptional acid corrosion resistance from a precisely controlled nickel-molybdenum-chromium composition per ASTM. High molybdenum and tungsten content suppresses pitting and reducing-acid attack; ultra-low carbon (0.01% max) eliminates sensitization risk in welded assemblies. Full elemental composition is certified in the EN 10204 MTC supplied with every Hastelloy B2 studs order from RealBolt.

Why Hastelloy B2 Alloy Composition Matters for Studs

Mo (26–30%) — Reducing Acid Resistance
The exceptionally high molybdenum content is the defining characteristic of Hastelloy B2. It provides outstanding resistance to hydrochloric acid at all concentrations and temperatures, including boiling HCl — the most aggressive reducing acid environment encountered in chemical processing. Stud threads remain intact where stainless steel would dissolve within hours.
Ultra-Low Carbon (0.02% max) — Grain Boundary Stability
The very low carbon ceiling in B2 compared to its predecessor Hastelloy B virtually eliminates carbide precipitation at grain boundaries during fabrication and welding. This means stud assemblies welded into reactor nozzles retain full corrosion resistance in the heat-affected zone without mandatory post-weld heat treatment.
Low Iron and Chromium — Reducing Environment Optimisation
Unlike oxidising-environment alloys, Hastelloy B2 deliberately minimises iron and chromium to avoid sensitisation in reducing acid service. The near-pure Ni-Mo matrix resists hydrogen embrittlement and stress corrosion cracking under sustained bolt preload in HCl and H2SO4 process streams.

Industry Applications

Hastelloy B2 Studs Applications — Industries & End Uses

Hastelloy B2 Studs from RealBolt are specified across chemical processing, pharmaceutical, oil and gas, and FGD where excellent corrosion resistance and 800 MPa tensile strength are required for reliable fastener performance. Click each industry below for detailed application examples. Select an industry below to see specific Hastelloy B2 studs application details and RealBolt stock availability.
Hastelloy B2 stud bolt sets are the standard specification for reactor closure flanges, column nozzle connections, and heat exchanger channel covers in hydrochloric acid production and handling facilities. The alloy withstands boiling HCl at all concentrations where no other commercially available fastener material survives without rapid corrosion.
Flange stud sets for sulfuric acid alkylation units, acetic acid reactors, phosphoric acid digesters, and mixed reducing acid process vessels. Hastelloy B2 studs are specified where process streams contain HCl, H2SO4 at moderate concentrations, or hydrogen chloride gas at elevated temperatures that would rapidly attack stainless steel or Hastelloy C276 fasteners.
Stud bolt assemblies for pharmaceutical reactor vessels, solvent recovery columns, and API synthesis equipment operating in reducing acid environments. The ultra-low carbon content of B2 ensures no contamination risk from carbide precipitation and supports CIP/SIP cleaning cycles with acidic wash solutions without fastener degradation.
Hastelloy B2 studs are used in chlorine dioxide bleaching equipment, HCl wash stage vessels, and acidic filtrate handling systems in kraft pulp mills. The alloy’s resistance to reducing chloride environments makes it the preferred fastener material for bleach plant flange connections where chlorine-bearing reducing conditions prevail.

Hastelloy B2 studs are manufactured to DIN 938 (one-end engagement metric studs), DIN 939 (both-end engagement metric studs), and ASME B18.31.2 for continuous thread studs in inch dimensions. Flange stud bolt sets for ASME B16.5 Class 150 to Class 2500 flanges are supplied per ASME B16.5 with matching heavy hex nuts. Custom thread forms including BSW, BSF, and Whitworth are available on request with a 15 working day lead time.
Yes – Hastelloy B2 (UNS N10665) is specifically engineered for hydrochloric acid service and provides outstanding resistance to HCl at all concentrations from ambient temperature up to and including boiling point. The 26-30% molybdenum content gives the alloy a corrosion rate below 0.1 mm/year in boiling concentrated HCl – a condition that destroys stainless steel and most other nickel alloys within hours. Stud assemblies in HCl reactor flanges routinely achieve 10+ year service life without replacement.
Hastelloy B3 (UNS N10675) is the successor alloy to B2 and offers improved thermal stability and resistance to stress corrosion cracking in oxidising acid contamination scenarios. B2 studs are preferred where the process stream is strictly reducing and free from oxidising contaminants such as ferric ions or dissolved oxygen. Where occasional oxidising upsets are possible, B3 studs are the safer specification. Both alloys share similar mechanical properties and dimensional standards, so B3 studs can be substituted for B2 without design changes.
Use a nickel-based anti-seize compound such as Molykote P-37, Jet-Lube KOPR-KOTE Pure Nickel, or Bostik Never-Seez Pure Nickel on all Hastelloy B2 stud threads and nut bearing faces. Apply a thin, even coat and reduce target torque by approximately 20% compared to dry assembly values. Never use copper-based or zinc-based anti-seize on nickel alloys – the galvanic potential difference accelerates corrosion at the thread interface, particularly in acid service environments.
