Product Overview

What are SS 321 Threaded Rods?

SS 321 threaded rods are high-temperature, titanium-stabilized austenitic stainless steel fasteners manufactured from UNS S32100 bar stock conforming to ASTM A479 or ASTM A193 Grade B8T. The addition of titanium (Ti) prevents intergranular corrosion during welding and high-temperature service, making SS 321 threaded rods ideal for bolted joints exposed to temperatures up to 870°C (1600°F).

These rods are widely specified for use in exhaust manifolds, heat exchangers, furnace equipment, and chemical process piping where resistance to scaling, oxidation, and carbide precipitation is critical. SS 321 threaded rods are available in metric and inch sizes, fully threaded along their length, and supplied with EN 10204 3.1 certification for full traceability.

Material Chemistry

SS 321 Chemical Composition

SS 321 Threaded Rods are manufactured from an iron-chromium-nickel alloy with chromium (16–26%), nickel (8–28%), and grade-specific molybdenum additions per ASTM and ASTM A193/A194. Chromium content governs the self-healing passive oxide film; molybdenum (2–6%) enhances chloride pitting resistance; and carbon content determines sensitization risk in welded assemblies.

Why SS 321 Alloy Composition Matters for Threaded Rods

Titanium Stabilization
Titanium binds carbon, preventing chromium carbide precipitation at grain boundaries. This ensures SS 321 threaded rods resist intergranular corrosion after welding or high-temperature exposure, unlike SS 304 or 316.
High-Temperature Strength
The austenitic structure and Ti addition allow SS 321 rods to maintain mechanical properties and oxidation resistance up to 870°C, making them ideal for exhaust, furnace, and heat exchanger bolting.
Weldability
SS 321 rods can be welded without risk of sensitization, eliminating the need for post-weld heat treatment in most applications.

Industry Applications

SS 321 Threaded Rods Applications — Industries & End Uses

SS 321 Threaded Rods from RealBolt are specified across food and dairy, pharmaceutical, marine, chemical processing, and oil and gas where very good corrosion resistance and 620 MPa tensile strength are required for reliable fastener performance. Click each industry below for detailed application examples.
SS 321 threaded rods are widely used for bolting in refinery heaters, reformers, and process piping where high-temperature resistance and immunity to intergranular corrosion are required. ASTM A193 B8T is the standard for heater and exchanger bolting.
Threaded rods for exhaust manifolds, ductwork, and furnace assemblies in power plants and industrial heating systems. SS 321 maintains strength and resists scaling at elevated temperatures, outperforming SS 304 in thermal cycling.
Used for bolted connections in acid and alkali process lines, reactors, and pressure vessels where resistance to organic acids and oxidizing environments is needed. SS 321 rods are preferred over SS 304/316 for nitric acid service.
SS 321 threaded rods are specified for aircraft engine mounts, exhaust clamps, and structural assemblies exposed to vibration and high heat. AMS 5645 and ASTM A479 standards apply.

SS 321 threaded rods are manufactured to DIN 975 (metric full thread), DIN 976 (studs), ASME B18.31.3 (inch and metric), and ASTM F593 (inch). Material is supplied per ASTM A479 or ASTM A193 B8T for high-temperature service. Custom thread forms (UNC, UNF, BSW, BSF) and cut lengths are available on request.
Use a molybdenum-based or PTFE anti-seize compound (such as Molykote 1000 or Loctite LB 8014) on threads and nut faces to prevent galling. Avoid copper-based anti-seize in chloride or high-temperature environments. Reduce torque by 20% when lubricated.
Yes – SS 321 threaded rods are stabilized with titanium, allowing continuous service up to 870°C (1600°F) without risk of intergranular corrosion or loss of mechanical strength. They are the preferred choice for furnace, exhaust, and heater bolting over SS 304/316.
No MOQ for standard sizes (M8-M30) in stock – single rods can be supplied for urgent needs. Custom diameters or cut lengths have a minimum order of 10 kg. Price breaks are available at 25, 100, and 500 rods.
