Product Overview

What are SS 347 / 347H Threaded Rods?

SS 347 / 347H threaded rods are high-temperature, stabilized austenitic stainless steel fasteners manufactured from UNS S34700/S34709 bar stock conforming to ASTM A193 and ASTM A276. Alloyed with columbium (niobium), these rods resist intergranular corrosion and maintain mechanical strength at elevated temperatures, making them ideal for high-stress, high-temperature bolted connections.

347H is the high-carbon version, offering improved creep resistance above 550°C. Both grades are widely specified for threaded rod applications in refinery, petrochemical, and power generation sectors where standard 304/316 stainless steel would fail due to carbide precipitation or thermal fatigue.

Material Chemistry

SS 347 / 347H Chemical Composition

SS 347 / 347H Threaded Rods are manufactured from an iron-chromium-nickel alloy with chromium (16–26%), nickel (8–28%), and grade-specific molybdenum additions per ASTM and ASTM A193/A194. Chromium content governs the self-healing passive oxide film; molybdenum (2–6%) enhances chloride pitting resistance; and carbon content determines sensitization risk in welded assemblies.

Why SS 347 / 347H Alloy Composition Matters for Threaded Rods

Columbium Stabilization — Prevents Sensitization
Columbium (niobium) additions prevent chromium carbide precipitation at grain boundaries, ensuring SS 347 / 347H threaded rods resist intergranular corrosion after welding or prolonged high-temperature exposure.
347H — High Carbon for Creep Strength
The higher carbon content in 347H improves creep resistance and mechanical stability above 550°C, making it the preferred choice for threaded rods in superheater and reheater assemblies.
Austenitic Structure — Non-Magnetic & Tough
The fully austenitic microstructure ensures excellent toughness, ductility, and non-magnetic properties, even at cryogenic temperatures, making these rods suitable for a wide range of demanding environments.

Industry Applications

SS 347 / 347H Threaded Rods Applications — Industries & End Uses

SS 347 / 347H Threaded Rods from RealBolt are specified across food and dairy, pharmaceutical, marine, chemical processing, and oil and gas where very good corrosion resistance and 620 MPa tensile strength are required for reliable fastener performance. Click each industry below for detailed application examples.
SS 347 / 347H threaded rods are widely used for bolting in reformer tube supports, catalyst baskets, and process piping in hydrogen, ammonia, and ethylene plants. Their resistance to polythionic acid and high-temperature oxidation makes them ideal for critical bolted joints in sulfur and hydroprocessing units.
Threaded rods for superheater, reheater, and economizer assemblies in coal-fired and combined cycle power plants. 347H grade is preferred for high-pressure steam lines and turbine casings due to its superior creep strength and resistance to thermal fatigue.
Used in heat exchanger tie rods, reactor vessel closures, and agitator assemblies where resistance to organic acids, chlorides, and cyclic thermal loading is required. SS 347 / 347H rods outperform 304/316 in environments prone to sensitization.
SS 347 / 347H threaded rods are specified for jet engine test stands, exhaust ducting, and furnace fixtures where high-temperature stability and non-magnetic properties are essential. AMS 5646 and ASTM A193 B8 Class 2 compliance available.
