What is ASTM A193 Grade B7?

ASTM A193 Grade B7 is the most widely used high-strength alloy steel stud bolt material. Made from AISI 4140/4142 chromium-molybdenum steel, quenched and tempered to achieve 862–1034 MPa (125–150 ksi) tensile with excellent notch toughness. Available in diameters up to 100mm with ASTM A194 Grade 2H heavy hex nuts. A193 B7 stud bolts are the default for refinery, petrochemical and power plant pressure flange bolting per ASME B16.5 and B16.47. Not suitable for sour H2S service above threshold or cryogenic temperatures below -45°C. For NACE-compliant sour service, specify B7M.

Chemical Composition

ASTM A193 Grade B7 is a chromium-molybdenum alloy steel fastener material, typically manufactured from AISI 4140 or 4142 grade steel. Chromium enhances hardenability and provides moderate corrosion resistance, while molybdenum improves strength retention at elevated temperatures and reduces temper embrittlement. Carbon content, generally between 0.38-0.48%, allows the material to achieve high tensile and yield strength through quenching and tempering heat treatment. Manganese and silicon further contribute to hardenability and deoxidation during steel production, ensuring a uniform, fine-grained microstructure suitable for demanding bolting applications.

The resulting quenched and tempered microstructure delivers excellent mechanical strength, fatigue resistance and dimensional stability under high preload conditions. Grade B7 offers reliable performance up to 538°C, making it ideal for high-temperature and high-pressure flange connections in petrochemical, power generation and pipeline industries. Although not stainless, its balanced alloy composition provides adequate atmospheric corrosion resistance for industrial service when properly coated or plated. These combined properties make B7 the industry-standard choice for critical stud bolts, hex bolts and threaded fasteners requiring superior strength and long-term reliability.

Frequently Asked Questions About ASTM A193 Grade B7 Fasteners

Browse the questions below to get quick, expert answers about ASTM A193 Grade B7 Fasteners — covering alloy specifications (AISI 4140/4142), applicable standards (ASTM A193), temperature ratings, corrosion performance, and how to source certified ASTM A193 Grade B7 fasteners from RealBolt Engineering Industries.
B7M is the NACE MR0175-compliant softened version of B7, limited to 552 MPa minimum tensile and 235 HBN maximum hardness (≤22 HRC). B7M allows use in H2S environments per NACE MR0175 where standard B7 would be susceptible to sulfide stress cracking (SSC).
ASTM A194 Grade 2H heavy hex nuts — the standard pairing. 2H nuts provide 2× the standard hardness range (248–327 HBN) to maintain proper strength ratio. For high-temperature service, A194 Grade 2HM (NACE-compliant) or Grade 4 (alloy steel) may be specified.
Standard B7 is not suitable below -45°C. For cryogenic service, specify L7 (quenched and tempered 4140 with Charpy test to -100°C) or L43 (4340 with Charpy to -73°C). SS A193 B8 class (316) is the standard for LNG and LOX service below -100°C.
A193 B7 is rated to 427°C (800°F) in ASME Section VIII Div.1. Above this, temper softening becomes a concern. For 427–566°C service, specify A193 B16 (Cr-Mo-V) or A193 B7 with extended yield data per ASME Appendix 3.
