What is Copper C11000 (ETP)?

Copper C11000 (UNS C11000, ETP — Electrolytic Tough Pitch) is the most widely used commercial copper with Cu ≥99.9% and oxygen 0.02–0.05%. It provides 101% IACS electrical conductivity — the highest of practical copper grades — with good ductility and solderability. The oxygen content is present as Cu2O inclusions at grain boundaries. C11000 fasteners, bus bars and electrical connectors are used in power distribution equipment, motor windings, transformer terminals, grounding straps, lightning protection systems and general electrical apparatus where maximum conductivity is required with no H2 exposure. Governed by ASTM B187 for bus bar and ASTM B152 for sheet.

Copper C11000 ETP Chemical Composition

Copper C11000, known as Electrolytic Tough Pitch (ETP) copper, contains a minimum of 99.90% copper with controlled oxygen content of approximately 0.02-0.04% present as cuprous oxide. This minimal oxygen level ensures excellent electrical and thermal conductivity while maintaining good ductility. The absence of significant alloying elements preserves copper’s inherent softness and malleability, allowing the material to be readily cold worked and formed into fastener shapes without cracking, while still achieving moderate strength through work hardening during manufacturing processes.

C11000 fasteners offer outstanding electrical conductivity, excellent thermal conductivity, and superior corrosion resistance in atmospheric, freshwater, and many chemical environments due to the formation of a protective oxide patina. Its high ductility enables complex forming operations, while good solderability and weldability simplify assembly processes. These properties make ETP copper fasteners ideal for electrical connections, grounding systems, busbar assemblies, and applications requiring reliable conductivity combined with dependable mechanical fastening performance.

Applications

Copper C11000 ETP Fastener Applications

Copper C11000 (ETP) Fasteners from RealBolt Engineering Industries are specified wherever corrosion resistance, elevated-temperature strength, or chemical media compatibility is critical to fastener performance. Primary industries and end-uses for Copper C11000 (ETP) fasteners include electrolytic tough pitch; 99.90% cu; electrical and plumbing fasteners.
Copper C11000 fasteners are widely used in grounding grids, bonding straps, switchgear, transformer connections, and electrical panels where low contact resistance and high conductivity are critical.
ETP copper bolts, nuts, and washers are commonly selected for busbar joints, battery terminals, power converters, rectifiers, and conductive clamping systems that require efficient heat and current transfer.
C11000 copper fasteners provide strong resistance to atmospheric corrosion and freshwater exposure, making them suitable for selected marine electrical hardware, pump components, and conductive equipment housings when galvanic compatibility is considered.
Because copper is non-sparking and non-magnetic, C11000 fasteners are used in electrical maintenance, process equipment, test fixtures, and sensitive environments where ferrous hardware may be unsuitable.

Frequently Asked Questions About Copper C11000 (ETP) Fasteners

Browse the questions below to get quick, expert answers about Copper C11000 (ETP) Fasteners — covering alloy specifications (UNS C11000), applicable standards (ASTM B187), temperature ratings, corrosion performance, and how to source certified Copper C11000 (ETP) fasteners from RealBolt Engineering Industries.
C11000’s Cu2O grain boundary inclusions react with H2 above 400°C: Cu2O + H2 → 2Cu + H2O. Steam generated at grain boundaries creates high internal pressure, causing intergranular cracking (hydrogen disease). Occurs during: annealing in H2 atmosphere, brazing with H2, or service in H2 at elevated temperature. Specify C10100 (OFE) or C12200 (DHP) for H2 service.
ASTM B187 covers C11000 bus bar (flat, square, round, channel). ASTM B152 covers sheet and strip. ASTM B133 covers rod. ASME SB-152 for pressure-vessel code. All supplied with EN 10204 2.1 or 3.1 MTC as required.
C11000 has nominal electrical conductivity 101% IACS (International Annealed Copper Standard) — the reference standard for electrical conductivity. This is matched only by C10100. Alloying elements reduce conductivity — C17200 beryllium copper drops to 22% IACS, C18200 chromium copper to 80% IACS.
Yes, by GTAW or GMAW with ERCu or ERCuSi-A filler, but high thermal conductivity requires high preheat (300°C for >6mm thickness). For thin sections, TIG welding with argon shielding and helium addition for increased heat. Hydrogen-containing shielding gases are prohibited — risk of hydrogen embrittlement.
