What is Beryllium Copper C17200?

Copper C17200 (UNS C17200, Beryllium Copper, Alloy 25) is the highest-strength standard copper alloy, achieving 1380 MPa tensile in the peak-aged condition through precipitation of CuBe (gamma-2) particles in the copper matrix. Be content 1.8–2.0%, Co/Ni 0.2–0.6%. Heat-treatable from the annealed 469 MPa condition to fully hardened 1380 MPa. C17200 fasteners, springs, connectors and instrumentation components are used in oil and gas non-sparking tools, aerospace precision connectors, plastic injection moulds, high-conductivity springs and any application requiring the highest copper-alloy strength with non-magnetic and non-sparking properties. Governed by ASTM B197 for bar.

Chemical Composition

Beryllium Copper C17200 derives its exceptional performance from a small but potent addition of beryllium, typically 1.8–2.0%, combined with nickel or cobalt for grain refinement. This alloying produces a copper-based material capable of precipitation hardening, resulting in strength levels comparable to many alloy steels while retaining copper’s inherent conductivity and non-magnetic characteristics. The controlled microstructure achieved through solution treatment and aging enables precise control over hardness, elasticity and fatigue resistance, making this alloy highly versatile for demanding fastener applications.

Fasteners manufactured from C17200 offer an outstanding combination of high strength, excellent corrosion resistance, non-sparking properties and reliable performance in elevated temperature environments up to 230°C. Its superior fatigue life, resistance to stress relaxation and non-magnetic behavior make it ideal for aerospace, oil and gas, electronics and marine industries where dependable, high-performance fastening solutions are essential.

Applications

Typical Applications for Beryllium Copper C17200 Fasteners

Beryllium Copper C17200 Fasteners from RealBolt Engineering Industries are specified wherever corrosion resistance, elevated-temperature strength, or chemical media compatibility is critical to fastener performance. Primary industries and end-uses for Beryllium Copper C17200 fasteners include highest strength copper alloy; non-sparking tools, precision fasteners.
C17200 fasteners are used in aerospace clamps, avionics housings, landing gear support hardware and defense assemblies where high strength, fatigue resistance and non-magnetic performance are required.
Beryllium copper bolts, nuts and washers are selected for non-sparking tools, valve assemblies, drilling equipment and refinery components operating in explosive or flammable environments.
The alloy combines mechanical strength with useful conductivity, making C17200 screws and studs suitable for switchgear, connectors, relays, battery systems, test equipment and grounding hardware.
C17200 fasteners perform well in seawater splash zones, process equipment and industrial machinery where copper alloy corrosion resistance and high clamp load are needed without ferromagnetic response.

Frequently Asked Questions About Beryllium Copper C17200 Fasteners

Browse the questions below to get quick, expert answers about Beryllium Copper C17200 Fasteners — covering alloy specifications (UNS C17200), applicable standards (ASTM B197), temperature ratings, corrosion performance, and how to source certified Beryllium Copper C17200 fasteners from RealBolt Engineering Industries.
All copper alloys are inherently non-sparking — copper’s softness and non-ferrous nature prevents the hard particle impact sparks that ferrous tools produce. C17200’s high strength allows non-sparking tools (hammers, chisels, wrenches) that match steel’s strength. Standard for ATEX Zone 0 explosive atmosphere applications.
Beryllium dust and fumes are toxic (berylliosis, an incurable lung disease) if inhaled during machining, grinding or welding. Always use: local exhaust ventilation, HEPA filtration, P100 respirators and wet machining methods. Handling fully hardened, uncut C17200 is safe — the hazard is only from airborne particles during machining.
ASTM B197 covers beryllium copper rod and bar (all tempers). ASTM B194 covers plate. ASME SB-197 for pressure-vessel applications. Supplied in annealed (TB00) or solution-annealed + cold-worked condition for customer ageing, or fully aged (TF00) to 1380 MPa. MTC includes Be content, tensile and hardness.
Solution anneal: 760–800°C, water quench (gives TB00, ~469 MPa). Peak age: 315–340°C for 2–3h (gives TF00, ~1380 MPa). Intermediate tempers: age at 340°C/1h (TH02, ~1170 MPa). Ageing must be done in controlled furnace — over-ageing above 350°C reduces strength. Full heat treatment records on MTC.
