What is Cupro Nickel 70/30?

Cupro-Nickel 70/30 (UNS C71500, CuNi30Fe) is the high-performance copper-nickel alloy with Ni 29–33% providing superior resistance to high-velocity seawater, polluted seawater and steam. It tolerates up to 4.5 m/s flow velocity and shows better performance than 90/10 CuNi in warm, polluted or stagnant seawater. Tensile strength 415 MPa. 70/30 CuNi fasteners are used in naval vessel seawater system components, offshore FPSO seawater lift pumps, desalination flash evaporators, power plant condenser heads and marine heat exchanger flanges requiring the highest CuNi performance. Governed by ASTM B122 and ASTM B151 for bar stock.

Cupro Nickel 70/30 Fasteners Chemical Composition

Cupro Nickel 70/30 fasteners derive their properties from a copper matrix alloyed with 30% nickel, along with small controlled additions of iron and manganese. Nickel enhances strength and imparts exceptional resistance to seawater corrosion, while iron improves resistance to impingement attack and manganese aids deoxidation and hot workability. This balanced composition results in a single-phase solid solution alloy that retains ductility across a wide temperature range while offering superior stability in aggressive marine environments.

These fasteners deliver outstanding resistance to biofouling, crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking, making them ideal for marine hardware, shipbuilding, offshore platforms and seawater piping systems. Their good thermal conductivity, moderate strength and excellent ductility allow reliable performance under cyclic loading and elevated temperatures up to 300°C. The alloy’s non-magnetic nature and weldability further extend its suitability for critical fastening applications where long-term corrosion resistance and mechanical reliability are essential.

Applications

Cupro Nickel 70/30 Fasteners Applications

Cupro Nickel 70/30 Fasteners from RealBolt Engineering Industries are specified wherever corrosion resistance, elevated-temperature strength, or chemical media compatibility is critical to fastener performance. Primary industries and end-uses for Cupro Nickel 70/30 fasteners include higher strength; desalination plants, offshore platforms, seawater fasteners.
Cupro Nickel 70/30 fasteners are widely used on hull fittings, seawater piping supports, pump assemblies, valve bodies, strainers, deck equipment and other shipboard hardware where galvanic compatibility with copper nickel systems and long service life in seawater are required.
C71500 fasteners provide dependable bolting for splash zone structures, offshore platforms, subsea skids, seawater lift pumps and instrumentation brackets. The alloy offers excellent chloride corrosion resistance without relying on coatings that can be damaged during installation.
70/30 Cu-Ni bolts, nuts and washers are selected for desalination plants, brine handling equipment, intake screens and condenser water circuits because they resist biofouling, impingement attack and localized seawater corrosion under controlled flow conditions.
Cupro Nickel 70/30 fasteners are used around condenser tube sheets, heat exchanger covers, flanges and seawater piping where compatible bolting is needed with C71500 tubing, copper nickel flanges and naval brass or bronze components.

Frequently Asked Questions About Cupro Nickel 70/30 Fasteners

Browse the questions below to get quick, expert answers about Cupro Nickel 70/30 Fasteners — covering alloy specifications (UNS C71500/WNR 2.0882), applicable standards (ASTM B151), temperature ratings, corrosion performance, and how to source certified Cupro Nickel 70/30 fasteners from RealBolt Engineering Industries.
70/30 CuNi tolerates seawater velocity up to 4.5 m/s — 50% higher than 90/10 CuNi (3 m/s). Above 4.5 m/s in pump casings and impellers, titanium or super-duplex 2507 is specified. For bolted joint hardware in marine pipe systems, velocity is rarely the limiting factor — erosion at bolt surfaces is minimal.
Higher nickel (29–33%) provides a more stable protective film in warm (above 25°C) and biologically active or polluted seawater where sulphide-producing bacteria can degrade the 90/10 film. Naval vessels operating in tropical and harboured (polluted) waters routinely specify 70/30 for hull fittings and sea chest bolting.
ASTM B151 covers C71500 (70/30 CuNi) rod, bar and shapes. ASTM B122 covers plate. ASME SB-151 for pressure-vessel applications. MIL-C-15726E for naval specification. Supplied hot-drawn or cold-drawn, annealed, with EN 10204 3.1 MTC.
No — copper-nickel alloys are non-magnetic (low magnetic permeability, µr ≈1.0). This is important for naval vessels and minesweeper components where magnetic field reduction is required. CuNi alloys are specified for sea-chest and sonar dome hardware on magnetically quiet vessels.
