What is Hastelloy B3?

Hastelloy B3 (UNS N10675) is the improved nickel-molybdenum alloy with Mo 28.5–31.5% — the highest molybdenum content of any commercial alloy — providing unmatched resistance to hydrochloric acid at all concentrations and temperatures. Additions of Fe, Co and W suppress the Ni-Mo ordering reactions that caused sensitisation in Hastelloy B2. Carbon ≤0.01% prevents carbide-related HAZ attack. Hastelloy B3 fasteners are the current preferred specification for HCl gas reactors, HBr production equipment, sulfuric acid reduction units and strongly reducing acid service. Governed by ASTM B335 for bar stock.

Hastelloy B3 Chemical Composition

Hastelloy B3 fasteners are nickel-molybdenum alloys containing approximately 28% molybdenum, with controlled additions of chromium, iron and tungsten to enhance thermal stability. The high nickel content provides a stable austenitic matrix, while molybdenum is the primary strengthening element responsible for superior resistance to reducing acid environments. Small amounts of manganese and silicon improve castability and weldability, and low carbon content minimizes carbide precipitation during welding, preserving corrosion resistance in heat-affected zones.

These fasteners deliver outstanding resistance to hydrochloric, sulfuric and other non-oxidizing acids, along with excellent resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking. Their thermal stability allows reliable performance at elevated temperatures without embrittlement. High tensile and yield strength ensure robust mechanical performance under demanding loads, while resistance to hydrogen embrittlement and chloride-induced cracking makes them ideal for chemical processing, pharmaceutical and pollution-control fastening applications requiring long-term durability.

Applications

Hastelloy B3 Fasteners Applications

Hastelloy B3 Fasteners from RealBolt Engineering Industries are specified wherever corrosion resistance, elevated-temperature strength, or chemical media compatibility is critical to fastener performance. Primary industries and end-uses for Hastelloy B3 fasteners include hcl resistance with enhanced thermal stability, chemical processing.
Hastelloy B3 fasteners are widely selected for pumps, valves, reactors, columns and piping joints exposed to hydrochloric acid because Alloy B-3 resists uniform corrosion across a broad range of acid concentrations and temperatures.
UNS N10675 bolts, studs and nuts provide reliable clamping in reducing chemical environments where conventional stainless steels or duplex alloys may suffer rapid attack, pitting or stress corrosion cracking.
Hastelloy B3 threaded fasteners are used around heat exchanger channels, tube sheets, evaporator assemblies and acid concentration equipment where reducing acids and process temperature fluctuations demand a stable nickel-molybdenum alloy.
Alloy B-3 fasteners are suitable for specialty chemical, fine chemical and pharmaceutical equipment handling acetic acid, phosphoric acid, organic acids and non-oxidizing chloride media, provided oxidizing contaminants are controlled.

Frequently Asked Questions About Hastelloy B3 Fasteners

Browse the questions below to get quick, expert answers about Hastelloy B3 Fasteners — covering alloy specifications (UNS N10675), applicable standards (ASTM B335), temperature ratings, corrosion performance, and how to source certified Hastelloy B3 fasteners from RealBolt Engineering Industries.
B2 experienced Ni-Mo ordering reactions in slow-cooled welds creating a susceptible HAZ. B3 added Fe, Co and W to suppress these ordering reactions, eliminating sensitisation without requiring PWHT. B3 is the recommended replacement for B2 in all new designs.
ASTM B335 covers nickel-molybdenum alloy bar (Hastelloy B, B2 and B3). ASME SB-335 is the pressure-vessel code equivalent. All supplied solution-annealed with EN 10204 3.1 MTC.
No. B3 has very low Cr (1–3%) and is not suitable for oxidising acids (HNO3, wet Cl2) or aerated solutions. Even small amounts of oxidising agents (Fe3+, Cu2+) accelerate B3 corrosion. Use C276 or C22 in mixed acid environments.
B3 is recommended for service below 593°C (1100°F) for corrosion applications. Above this, oxidation of the alloy surface reduces protective properties. For high-temperature HCl service above 593°C, special high-temperature alloys are required.
