Product Overview

What are Hastelloy C276 Screws?

Hastelloy C276 screws are nickel-molybdenum-chromium alloy fasteners machined from UNS N10276 bar stock conforming to ASTM B574. The alloy’s exceptional corrosion resistance stems from its high molybdenum content (15-17%) and tungsten addition (3-4.5%), which together suppress pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking across a broad spectrum of aggressive chemical environments.

With a PREN exceeding 70, Hastelloy C276 screws outperform every standard stainless steel and most nickel alloys in oxidising and reducing acid service. They are routinely specified under NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 for chemical process equipment, FGD scrubbers, pharmaceutical reactors, and offshore installations where fastener corrosion failure is not an acceptable risk.

Material Chemistry

Hastelloy C276 Chemical Composition

Hastelloy C276 Screws derive their exceptional acid corrosion resistance from a precisely controlled nickel-molybdenum-chromium composition per ASTM. High molybdenum and tungsten content suppresses pitting and reducing-acid attack; ultra-low carbon (0.01% max) eliminates sensitization risk in welded assemblies. Full elemental composition is certified in the EN 10204 MTC supplied with every Hastelloy C276 screws order from RealBolt.

Why Hastelloy C276 Alloy Composition Matters for Screws

Mo (15–17%) + W (3–4.5%) — Dual Reducing Acid Resistance
The combined molybdenum and tungsten content gives Hastelloy C276 screws outstanding resistance to both reducing acids (HCl, H2SO4) and oxidising media. This dual protection is critical for screws used in chemical reactor closures and heat exchanger covers where process chemistry can shift between oxidising and reducing conditions.
Ultra-Low Carbon (0.01% max) — No Sensitisation Risk
The extremely low carbon ceiling eliminates carbide precipitation at grain boundaries during welding or elevated-temperature service. Hastelloy C276 screws retain full corrosion resistance in the heat-affected zone without any post-weld heat treatment, making them ideal for welded assemblies in aggressive chemical plant.
Cr (14.5–16.5%) — Oxidising Environment Stability
Chromium provides a stable passive film in mildly oxidising environments and wet chlorine service. Combined with the high Mo content, this gives C276 screws a PREN exceeding 70 — far beyond the threshold required for long-term seawater and halide resistance without coating or cathodic protection.

Industry Applications

Hastelloy C276 Screws Applications — Industries & End Uses

Hastelloy C276 Screws from RealBolt are specified across chemical processing, pharmaceutical, oil and gas, and FGD where excellent corrosion resistance and 800 MPa tensile strength are required for reliable fastener performance. Click each industry below for detailed application examples. Select an industry below to see specific Hastelloy C276 screws application details and RealBolt stock availability.
Hastelloy C276 socket head cap screws and machine screws are the standard fastener choice for chemical reactor closure flanges, agitator shaft seals, and pressure vessel nozzle covers handling hydrochloric acid, sulphuric acid, phosphoric acid, and mixed halide streams. NACE MR0175 compliant for sour service environments.
FGD scrubber internals, absorber tower spray headers, and ductwork connection flanges are routinely fastened with Hastelloy C276 screws. The combination of wet HCl, SO2, and chloride-bearing condensate at elevated temperatures eliminates stainless steel and duplex options – C276 is the industry-standard specification for this service.
Hastelloy C276 screws are specified for pharmaceutical reactor vessel closures, filter press assemblies, and high-purity process pipework connections where FDA-compliant materials, zero contamination risk, and resistance to aggressive cleaning agents (CIP/SIP) are mandatory. Surface finish to Ra 0.8 µm available on request.
Seawater cooling system flanges, heat exchanger water box covers, and offshore structural connections in splash zones are secured with Hastelloy C276 screws where PREN 70+ is required. Immune to crevice corrosion under screw heads and washers in full seawater immersion – no coating or cathodic protection required.

Yes – Hastelloy C276 is one of the few alloys with proven resistance to hydrochloric acid across a wide concentration and temperature range. The high molybdenum content (15-17%) combined with tungsten (3-4.5%) provides exceptional resistance to reducing acids including HCl at concentrations up to 37% at ambient temperature, and at elevated temperatures in dilute concentrations. C276 screws are routinely specified for HCl reactor closures, acid storage vessel nozzles, and pickling tank hardware where stainless steel and even higher-alloy grades fail rapidly.
Hastelloy C276 screws can be used continuously up to 1038°C in oxidising atmospheres and up to approximately 760°C in reducing atmospheres. Above 500°C, precipitation of secondary phases can begin to affect corrosion resistance in certain environments – for sustained high-temperature service above this threshold, consult our engineering team for heat treatment and application review. For cryogenic applications, C276 maintains excellent toughness and ductility down to -196°C, making it suitable for LNG and cryogenic process equipment fastening.
Yes – Hastelloy C276 meets the hardness requirement of =35 HRC specified in NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 for nickel alloy fasteners in H2S-containing sour service environments. All screws are supplied with hardness survey results on the MTC. For critical sour service applications requiring TPI-witnessed certification, EN 10204 3.2 MTCs are available. C276 is listed in NACE MR0175 Table A-3 as an acceptable material for sour service fasteners without restriction on H2S partial pressure.
