Product Overview

What are Inconel 625 Studs?

Inconel 625 studs are fully threaded or double-end threaded fasteners manufactured from UNS N06625 bar stock conforming to ASTM B446. The alloy derives its exceptional strength through solid-solution strengthening provided by molybdenum (8-10%) and niobium (3.15-4.15%), achieving a minimum tensile strength of 758 MPa in the annealed condition without any precipitation hardening treatment.

With a PREN exceeding 51, Inconel 625 studs resist chloride-induced pitting and crevice corrosion in seawater environments that would rapidly destroy standard stainless steel fasteners. These studs are specified under NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 for sour-service flange assemblies, subsea wellhead connections, offshore structural joints, and high-temperature chemical process equipment worldwide.

Material Chemistry

Inconel 625 Chemical Composition

Inconel 625 Studs are manufactured from a nickel-chromium superalloy containing nickel (72% min), chromium (14–17%), and iron (6–10%). Each element is precisely controlled per ASTM — nickel provides chloride SCC immunity, chromium drives high-temperature oxidation resistance, and iron balances structural stability and alloy cost.

Chemical Composition per ASTM B446

Nickel (Ni)58.0% min
Chromium (Cr)20.0-23.0%
Molybdenum (Mo)8.0-10.0%

Iron (Fe)5.0% max

Why Inconel 625 Alloy Composition Matters for Studs

Mo (8–10%) — Crevice & Pitting Immunity
Molybdenum elevates the PREN of Inconel 625 to 51+, providing complete resistance to crevice corrosion in the thread engagement zone and under nut bearing faces — the most vulnerable areas on a stud bolt in immersed seawater service.
Nb (3.15–4.15%) — Sensitisation Prevention
Niobium ties up carbon and prevents intergranular carbide precipitation during welding or elevated-temperature service. Inconel 625 studs retain full corrosion resistance in the heat-affected zone of welded assemblies without post-weld heat treatment.
Solid-Solution Strengthening — No Age Hardening
Unlike age-hardened alloys such as Inconel 718, alloy 625 achieves its 758 MPa tensile strength through solid-solution mechanisms alone. This eliminates the risk of hydrogen embrittlement associated with high-hardness precipitation-hardened studs in sour-service environments.

Answers for Buyers

Inconel 625 Studs — Frequently Asked Questions

Browse expert answers to common questions about Inconel 625 Studs from RealBolt — covering ASTM standards, max service temperature, corrosion resistance, available sizes, lead times, and MTC certification. Contact our technical team directly for project-specific guidance on Inconel 625 studs selection and pricing.
Inconel 625 studs are available in three standard configurations: fully threaded studs (DIN 976-1 / ASME B18.31.2), double-end studs with equal thread lengths, and tap-end studs with one short and one long threaded end. ASME B16.5 flange stud bolts with heavy hex nuts are supplied as matched sets for Class 150 through Class 2500 flanges. Custom configurations including reduced shank, waisted shank, and metric-to-inch cross-thread studs are available on request with 15 working day lead time.
Inconel 625 studs retain useful mechanical properties up to approximately 980°C in oxidising atmospheres. At 650°C, tensile strength remains above 550 MPa. However, prolonged exposure between 650°C and 750°C can cause precipitation of the delta phase, which reduces ductility over time. For continuous service above 700°C, Inconel 718 or Waspaloy studs may be more appropriate. Consult our engineering team for high-temperature application selection.
Yes – Inconel 625 studs are listed in NACE MR0175/ISO 15156-3 Table A.3 for use in H2S-containing sour service environments. Compliance requires hardness =35 HRC (220 HB maximum), which is inherent in the annealed condition of alloy 625. Each batch is supplied with a hardness survey report. Cold-worked or work-hardened material is not acceptable for sour service and is not supplied without explicit customer instruction and engineering review.
Yes – we supply complete stud and nut sets with Inconel 625 heavy hex nuts (ASTM B446 / ASME B18.2.2) or Inconel 625 hex nuts (DIN 934) as matched heats under a single EN 10204 3.1 MTC. For ASME B16.5 flange assemblies, sets are supplied as two heavy hex nuts per stud bolt. Mixed-material sets pairing Inconel 625 studs with Monel 400 or Hastelloy C276 nuts are available for specific galvanic compatibility requirements.
