Product Overview

What are Monel 400 Studs?

Monel 400 studs are nickel-copper alloy fasteners manufactured from UNS N04400 bar stock conforming to ASTM B164. The alloy’s single-phase solid-solution structure – comprising 63-70% nickel and 28-34% copper – delivers a minimum tensile strength of 482 MPa in the annealed condition, with excellent toughness retained at cryogenic temperatures down to -196°C.

Monel 400 studs resist corrosion in seawater, hydrofluoric acid, and alkaline media at a level no standard stainless steel can replicate. They are specified under NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 for sour-service piping systems, marine pump shafts, and chemical process flanges where chloride stress corrosion cracking of austenitic stainless steel is a documented failure mode.

Material Chemistry

Monel 400 Chemical Composition

Monel 400 Studs are produced from a nickel-copper alloy containing 63% minimum nickel and 27–34% copper, with elemental limits certified to ASTM. The nickel base delivers seawater and HF acid immunity; copper additions enhance ductility; and in Monel K500, aluminium and titanium additions enable age-hardened strength above 896 MPa.

Chemical Composition per ASTM B164

Nickel (Ni)63.0% min
Copper (Cu)28.0-34.0%
Iron (Fe)2.5% max
Manganese (Mn)2.0% max
Carbon (C)0.30% max

Why Monel 400 Alloy Composition Matters for Studs

Ni-Cu Balance (63% Ni min) — Seawater & HF Acid Immunity
The high nickel-copper ratio gives Monel 400 outstanding resistance to seawater corrosion across all velocities, including under stud thread roots and nut bearing faces where crevice conditions develop. It is one of very few alloys that resists anhydrous hydrofluoric acid at all concentrations.
Low Carbon (0.30% max) — Weld HAZ Integrity
The controlled carbon ceiling prevents intergranular carbide precipitation in the heat-affected zone when Monel 400 studs are welded into assemblies or used in high-temperature flanged joints, preserving corrosion resistance without post-weld heat treatment in most applications.
Single-Phase Solid Solution — No Sensitisation Risk
Unlike duplex or austenitic stainless steels, Monel 400 has no secondary phase to sensitise. Studs retain full mechanical properties and corrosion resistance after thermal cycling between -196°C and 480°C, making them reliable in cryogenic LNG service and steam-traced piping alike.

?? Anti-galling: Use nickel-based anti-seize (Molykote P-37 or Bostik Never-Seez Pure Nickel). Lubricated values assume K=0.15. Never use copper-based anti-seize on nickel-copper alloys - galvanic incompatibility accelerates thread corrosion.

Industry Applications

Monel 400 Studs Applications — Industries & End Uses

Monel 400 Studs from RealBolt are specified across marine, HF alkylation, desalination, and chemical processing where excellent corrosion resistance and 550 MPa tensile strength are required for reliable fastener performance. Click each industry below for detailed application examples. Select an industry below to see specific Monel 400 studs application details and RealBolt stock availability.
Monel 400 stud bolt sets are the industry-standard specification for hydrofluoric acid alkylation unit piping flanges, where no other common alloy survives anhydrous HF at process concentrations. Also specified for NACE MR0175-compliant sour-service flanged connections in wellhead and production manifold assemblies where H2S partial pressure exceeds NACE threshold limits.
Stud bolts and continuous thread studs for seawater pump casings, propeller shaft brackets, sea chest valve flanges, and offshore platform structural connections in the splash zone. Monel 400 resists biofouling-induced crevice corrosion under nut bearing faces without cathodic protection, outperforming super duplex stainless steel in stagnant seawater crevice conditions.
Flange stud bolt sets for sulfuric acid concentration units, caustic soda evaporators, chlorinated solvent process vessels, and hydrochloric acid storage tank nozzle connections. Monel 400 studs are specified where 316L stainless steel fails by pitting or stress corrosion cracking in halide-bearing process streams.
Stud bolts for multi-stage flash (MSF) and reverse osmosis (RO) pressure vessel end-cap closures, brine heater tube sheet flanges, and high-pressure pump casing joints. Monel 400 resists chloride-laden brine at elevated temperatures where titanium fasteners are cost-prohibitive and stainless steel is susceptible to pitting.

Monel 400 studs are manufactured to DIN 938 (one-end engagement metric studs), DIN 939 (both-end engagement metric studs), ASME B18.31.2 (continuous thread studs, inch), and ASME B16.5 / B16.47 for flange stud bolt sets in Class 150 through Class 2500. Custom thread forms including BSW, BSF, and BSPP are available on request with a 15 working day lead time. All studs are supplied with matching Monel 400 heavy hex nuts per ASTM F467 unless otherwise specified.
Use nickel-based anti-seize compound (Molykote P-37, Bostik Never-Seez Pure Nickel, or Jet-Lube KOPR-KOTE Pure Nickel). Apply to both threaded ends and nut bearing faces before assembly. Reduce torque values by approximately 20% compared to dry assembly values. Never use copper-based anti-seize on Monel 400 – the copper content in the anti-seize creates a galvanic cell with the nickel-copper alloy matrix and accelerates corrosion at the thread interface, particularly in wet or immersed service.
Yes – Monel 400 is one of the very few commercially available alloys with proven resistance to anhydrous and aqueous hydrofluoric acid across all concentrations at ambient and elevated temperatures. Monel 400 stud bolt sets are the standard specification for HF alkylation unit piping flanges in petroleum refining, as documented in NACE Publication 5A171 and API RP 751. No special coating is required. Studs must be in the annealed condition with hardness below 35 HRC per NACE MR0175 for sour-service concurrent exposure.
Yes – Monel 400 retains full ductility and impact toughness at temperatures down to -196°C (liquid nitrogen temperature) without any ductile-to-brittle transition, which is a characteristic failure mode of ferritic and martensitic steels. Monel 400 studs are specified for LNG plant cold box flange connections, cryogenic valve bonnets, and liquid nitrogen storage vessel nozzle flanges. No special low-temperature impact testing (Charpy) is required for Monel 400 at cryogenic service temperatures under most pressure vessel codes.
