What is Nimonic 80A?

Nimonic 80A (UNS N07080) is a precipitation-hardenable Ni-Cr alloy with Ti 1.8–2.7% and Al 1.0–1.8% forming γ’ (Ni3(Ti,Al)) precipitates to deliver 1241 MPa tensile in the aged condition. Creep rupture strength is maintained to 950°C. The alloy was developed by Rolls-Royce in the 1940s and remains a workhorse for gas turbine bolting. Nimonic 80A fasteners are used for gas turbine compressor disc and rotor bolts, combustion chamber studs, turbine nozzle guide vane fasteners and high-temperature steam valve bolting at 700–950°C. Governed by BS 3076 NA20 and AMS 5765.

Nimonic 80A Fasteners Chemical Composition

Nimonic 80A is a nickel-chromium-based superalloy strengthened primarily through additions of titanium, aluminium and carbon, which promote the precipitation of gamma prime (Ni3(Ti,Al)) phases within the austenitic matrix. Chromium content, typically between 18 and 21 percent, provides excellent oxidation and corrosion resistance, while cobalt and iron are maintained at controlled levels to preserve microstructural stability at elevated temperatures. These carefully balanced alloying additions collectively enhance creep resistance, tensile strength and long-term thermal stability, making the composition ideally suited for demanding high-temperature fastener applications.

Fasteners manufactured from Nimonic 80A deliver outstanding mechanical performance under sustained high-temperature loading, retaining strength and dimensional stability where conventional stainless steels would fail. Their superior resistance to oxidation, sulphidation and creep deformation ensures reliable long-term service in gas turbines, aerospace engines, exhaust systems and industrial furnace equipment. The alloy’s excellent fatigue resistance and low relaxation properties further support secure, leak-free joints in critical high-stress environments, confirming its status as a premium fastener material for extreme operating conditions.

Applications

Nimonic 80A Fasteners Applications

Nimonic 80A Fasteners from RealBolt Engineering Industries are specified wherever corrosion resistance, elevated-temperature strength, or chemical media compatibility is critical to fastener performance. Primary industries and end-uses for Nimonic 80A fasteners include age-hardened; gas turbine blades, bolts, aerospace high-temp fasteners.
Nimonic 80A bolts, studs and nuts are widely used in turbine casings, combustion hardware, afterburner assemblies and hot-section support components where standard stainless fasteners lose strength at temperature.
The alloy is suitable for furnace fasteners, grids, trays, retorts and support frames exposed to repeated heating cycles, oxidation and sustained mechanical load.
Nimonic 80A fasteners provide reliable clamping in steam plants, gas turbines, incinerators, turbocharger systems and exhaust assemblies that operate under thermal cycling and vibration.
Nimonic 80A screws, studs and nuts are used in racing exhausts, turbocharger hardware and high-temperature engine assemblies where low relaxation and oxidation resistance are critical.

Frequently Asked Questions About Nimonic 80A Fasteners

Browse the questions below to get quick, expert answers about Nimonic 80A Fasteners — covering alloy specifications (UNS N07080), applicable standards (BS 3076), temperature ratings, corrosion performance, and how to source certified Nimonic 80A fasteners from RealBolt Engineering Industries.
Solution anneal: 1080°C/8h, AC or OQ. Precipitation age: 700°C/16h, AC. This produces optimum γ’ precipitate distribution giving 1241 MPa tensile and 960 MPa yield. Alternative: 1080°C/8h then 850°C/4h then 700°C/16h for modified precipitate size. Full heat treatment records on MTC.
BS 3076 NA20 (rod and bar), AMS 5765 (bar and forgings), DTD 5017 (aerospace). DIN equivalent: 2.4952, EN 10302. All supplied in the fully aged condition (solution + precipitation heat treated) unless otherwise specified, with EN 10204 3.1 MTC.
Gas turbine compressor disc bolts, turbine rotor bolts, combustion chamber liner studs, nozzle guide vane retention hardware and high-pressure steam valve stuffing box bolting. The combination of high strength (1241 MPa) and creep resistance to 950°C makes it the standard gas turbine bolt alloy for temperatures above Inconel 718’s limit (704°C).
Nimonic 80A is a gas turbine alloy — not a sour-service alloy. It is not listed in NACE MR0175 for H2S environments. For high-strength sour service, Inconel 718 (NACE-hardness controlled) is the standard alloy.
