Product Overview

What are SS 410 / 416 Nuts?

SS 410 / 416 nuts are high-strength, martensitic stainless steel fasteners manufactured from ASTM A276/A479 bar stock in grades 410 and 416. These grades are known for their excellent mechanical properties, moderate corrosion resistance, and superior machinability (especially 416). SS 410 nuts are widely used for their hardness and wear resistance, while SS 416 nuts are preferred where high-speed machining and tight tolerances are required.

Both grades are magnetic and can be heat treated to achieve high tensile strength, making them suitable for demanding bolted joints in pumps, valves, and general engineering applications. SS 410 / 416 nuts are commonly specified for use in mildly corrosive environments, such as water, steam, and some chemicals, where austenitic stainless steels may be over-specified.

Material Chemistry

SS 410 / 416 Chemical Composition

SS 410 / 416 Nuts are manufactured from an iron-chromium-nickel alloy with chromium (16–26%), nickel (8–28%), and grade-specific molybdenum additions per ASTM and ASTM A193/A194. Chromium content governs the self-healing passive oxide film; molybdenum (2–6%) enhances chloride pitting resistance; and carbon content determines sensitization risk in welded assemblies.

Why SS 410 / 416 Alloy Composition Matters for Nuts

Cr (11.5–14%) — Corrosion & Oxidation Resistance
Chromium content provides a passive oxide layer, giving SS 410 / 416 nuts moderate resistance to atmospheric corrosion, steam, and mild chemicals. Suitable for water, oil, and non-chloride process environments.
S (0.15% min in 416) — Superior Machinability
SS 416 is the most machinable stainless steel due to its high sulfur content, enabling high-speed CNC production of precision nuts with excellent thread finish and tight tolerances.
Martensitic Structure — High Strength & Hardness
Both grades can be heat treated to achieve high tensile strength and hardness, making them ideal for bolted joints subject to wear, vibration, or moderate impact.

Industry Applications

SS 410 / 416 Nuts Applications — Industries & End Uses

SS 410 / 416 Nuts from RealBolt are specified across food and dairy, pharmaceutical, marine, chemical processing, and oil and gas where very good corrosion resistance and 620 MPa tensile strength are required for reliable fastener performance. Click each industry below for detailed application examples.
SS 410 / 416 nuts are widely used in pump casings, valve bonnets, and gland assemblies for water, steam, and non-chloride process fluids. Their hardness and moderate corrosion resistance make them ideal for sealing and pressure-retaining joints.
Hex nuts and lock nuts for machine frames, gearboxes, and rotating equipment where high strength and wear resistance are required, but exposure to aggressive chemicals is limited.
SS 410 / 416 nuts are used in food machinery, bottling lines, and conveyors where moderate corrosion resistance and easy cleaning are needed, but not continuous exposure to chlorides or acids.
Used in brake assemblies, suspension joints, and rail fastenings where vibration resistance and mechanical strength are critical. SS 416 nuts are preferred for high-volume, precision-machined automotive components.

Browse expert answers to common questions about SS 410 / 416 Nuts from RealBolt — covering ASTM A193/A194 grades, chloride resistance, temperature limits, sensitization, sizes, and MTC documentation. Contact our technical team directly for project-specific guidance on SS 410 / 416 nuts selection and pricing.
SS 410 / 416 hex nuts are available to DIN 934 (metric), ISO 4032, ASME B18.2.2 (inch hex and heavy hex), and DIN 439/ISO 4035 (thin nuts). Custom thread forms such as UNC, UNF, BSW, and BSF can be supplied on request. Special lock nuts and slotted nuts are also available for critical applications.
Yes – it is strongly recommended to use a molybdenum-based or PTFE anti-seize compound on threads and bearing surfaces to prevent galling, especially during repeated tightening. Avoid dry assembly, as martensitic stainless steels are prone to thread seizure under load.
No – SS 410 / 416 nuts are not recommended for continuous exposure to seawater, brine, or chloride-rich chemicals, as they are susceptible to pitting and crevice corrosion. For marine or aggressive chemical service, use SS 316 or duplex stainless nuts.
Standard sizes (M8-M36) are available ex-stock with no formal MOQ – single-piece orders for urgent maintenance are accepted. Custom sizes or special thread forms may require a 10 kg minimum batch. Quantity discounts apply at 50, 200, and 500 pieces.
