What is Titanium Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V)?

Titanium Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V, UNS R56400) is the most widely used titanium alloy, accounting for over 50% of all titanium production. The 6% Al and 4% V additions provide 896 MPa tensile and 828 MPa yield in the annealed condition — more than double Grade 2 — while maintaining 4.43 g/cm³ density. Heat-treatable to 1170 MPa. Fatigue strength approaches high-strength steel. Ti-6Al-4V fasteners are standard for aerospace structural joints, aircraft engine compressor hardware, offshore structural connections requiring weight reduction, and medical bone screws. Governed by ASTM B348 Grade 5, AMS 4928 and AMS 6931. The ELI (extra-low interstitial) grade (ASTM F136) is used for surgical implants.

Titanium Grade 5 Ti-6Al-4V Chemical Composition

Titanium Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) is an alpha-beta titanium alloy strengthened primarily through the addition of 6% aluminium and 4% vanadium. Aluminium stabilises the alpha phase, enhancing tensile strength and reducing density, while vanadium stabilises the beta phase, improving ductility and enabling heat treatment through solution treating and aging. Trace elements such as iron, oxygen and carbon are tightly controlled to maintain consistent mechanical properties and fracture toughness. This carefully balanced composition gives Ti-6Al-4V its excellent strength-to-weight ratio and reliable performance across demanding fastener applications.

The alloy offers outstanding corrosion resistance due to a stable, self-healing titanium oxide layer, making it highly suitable for marine, chemical and aerospace environments. Its high strength-to-weight ratio, excellent fatigue resistance and ability to retain mechanical integrity at elevated temperatures make it ideal for aerospace fasteners, high-performance bolts and critical structural components. Combined with good weldability and biocompatibility, Ti-6Al-4V fasteners deliver long-term reliability, reduced weight and superior performance compared to conventional steel or stainless steel alternatives in high-stress engineering applications.

Applications

Titanium Grade 5 Fastener Applications

Titanium Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) Fasteners from RealBolt Engineering Industries are specified wherever corrosion resistance, elevated-temperature strength, or chemical media compatibility is critical to fastener performance. Primary industries and end-uses for Titanium Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) fasteners include workhorse alloy; 2x stronger than grade 2; aerospace, defense.
Titanium Grade 5 fasteners are widely used in aircraft structures, engine components, brackets, landing gear hardware and satellite assemblies where high tensile strength, fatigue resistance and low weight are critical.
Ti-6Al-4V bolts, nuts and screws perform well in seawater, splash zones and chloride-rich environments, making them suitable for marine hardware, subsea equipment, pumps, valves and offshore instrumentation.
The alloy is selected for racing, cycling, performance vehicles and precision machinery because it reduces mass while maintaining high strength, excellent fatigue resistance and reliable thread performance.
Titanium Grade 5 fasteners are used in heat exchangers, desalination plants, process skids and oxidizing chemical environments where stainless steel may suffer pitting, crevice corrosion or chloride stress corrosion cracking.

Frequently Asked Questions About Titanium Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) Fasteners

Browse the questions below to get quick, expert answers about Titanium Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) Fasteners — covering alloy specifications (UNS R56400), applicable standards (ASTM B348), temperature ratings, corrosion performance, and how to source certified Titanium Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) fasteners from RealBolt Engineering Industries.
Grade 5 is rated for continuous service to 315°C. Above this, oxygen absorption degrades ductility and corrosion resistance. Above 400°C, titanium fire risk in high-velocity oxygen streams (LOX, compressor air) must be assessed. Nickel alloys (Inconel 718) are required above 315°C for titanium-equivalent strength.
Titanium is listed in NACE MR0175 but Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) has restrictions — it can be susceptible to SCC in methanol-containing H2S environments and in some acidic chloride conditions under high stress. The annealed condition (hardness ≤35 HRC) is acceptable. ELI grade is listed for sour gas with additional restrictions.
ELI (Extra-Low Interstitial) Grade 5 (ASTM F136) has lower O (≤0.13%), N (≤0.05%), C (≤0.08%) and Fe (≤0.25%) for improved fracture toughness and ductility in surgical implants. Standard Grade 5 (AMS 4928) has O ≤0.20%. For non-medical aerospace fasteners, standard Grade 5 is used.
ASTM B348 Grade 5 (bar and billet), AMS 4928 (aerospace bar, forgings), AMS 6931 (forgings), ASME SB-348 Grade 5 (pressure vessel). Supplied annealed or solution-treated + aged as specified, with EN 10204 3.1 MTC, full chemical, tensile, hardness and microstructure report.
