What is Titanium Grade 7?

Titanium Grade 7 (UNS R52400) is palladium-doped commercially-pure titanium — Grade 2 composition with Pd 0.12–0.25% added. The palladium addition dramatically extends titanium’s corrosion resistance into reducing acid environments (dilute HCl, dilute H2SO4, HF traces) where Grade 2 would corrode. Pd acts as a cathodic depolariser, stabilising the passive film. Titanium Grade 7 fasteners are the premium choice for chemical plant handling reducing acids with chloride traces, wet H2S service, HF-contaminated streams and mixed acid environments. Expensive (Pd content) but unmatched in this niche. ASTM B348 Grade 7.

Titanium Grade 7 Fasteners Chemical Composition

Titanium Grade 7 is a near-identical variant of commercially pure Titanium Grade 2, distinguished by the addition of 0.12–0.25% palladium. This palladium content is the defining alloying element, significantly enhancing resistance to reducing acid environments without altering the mechanical strength or ductility of the base titanium. Trace amounts of iron, oxygen, carbon, nitrogen and hydrogen are tightly controlled to preserve toughness and weldability, ensuring the alloy retains excellent formability while gaining superior corrosion performance compared to standard grades.

Fasteners produced from Grade 7 titanium deliver outstanding corrosion resistance in aggressive chemical processing environments, including hydrochloric and sulfuric acid exposure, making them ideal for chemical plants, marine equipment and pharmaceutical processing. The alloy maintains excellent strength-to-weight ratio, good ductility, and reliable performance across a wide temperature range. Its biocompatibility, resistance to crevice corrosion and long service life under harsh conditions make Grade 7 fasteners a preferred choice for critical applications demanding both mechanical reliability and exceptional chemical resistance.

Applications

Titanium Grade 7 Fastener Applications

Titanium Grade 7 Fasteners from RealBolt Engineering Industries are specified wherever corrosion resistance, elevated-temperature strength, or chemical media compatibility is critical to fastener performance. Primary industries and end-uses for Titanium Grade 7 fasteners include pd-doped grade 2; most corrosion-resistant; chemical plant fasteners.
Titanium Grade 7 fasteners are used for seawater pumps, piping, valve assemblies, splash zone hardware and marine heat exchanger components where chloride crevice corrosion can limit stainless steel and standard titanium grades.
The palladium modified chemistry provides strong resistance in many reducing acid environments, making Grade 7 bolts and nuts suitable for reactors, scrubbers, storage tanks, piping flanges and process equipment exposed to acidic chloride solutions.
UNS R52400 fasteners are selected for brine, produced water and sour service equipment where low weight, high corrosion resistance and reliable clamping performance are required in demanding field conditions.
Grade 7 titanium studs, screws and washers support long service life in desalination plants, pharmaceutical process systems and heat exchanger assemblies requiring clean surfaces, low contamination risk and exceptional localized corrosion resistance.

Frequently Asked Questions About Titanium Grade 7 Fasteners

Browse the questions below to get quick, expert answers about Titanium Grade 7 Fasteners — covering alloy specifications (UNS R52400), applicable standards (ASTM B348), temperature ratings, corrosion performance, and how to source certified Titanium Grade 7 fasteners from RealBolt Engineering Industries.
In reducing acids, the cathodic hydrogen evolution reaction depolarises the passive TiO2 film, causing corrosion. Pd acts as a cathodic catalyst — Pd’s more noble potential shifts the free corrosion potential to the passive region, stabilising the TiO2 film. Even trace Pd (0.12–0.25%) provides this effect.
Chemical plant handling dilute H2SO4 with Cl- ions (HCl gas scrubbers, pickling tanks), HF-contaminated streams in semiconductor and fluorochemical plant, wet H2S in reducing conditions and mildly reducing chloride environments where Grade 2 corrodes. High Pd cost limits Grade 7 to justified niche applications.
ASTM B348 Grade 7 (bar), ASME SB-348 Grade 7 (pressure vessels), ASTM B265 Grade 7 (sheet and strip). Palladium content is verified by XRF or ICP-OES analysis on MTC. All supplied with EN 10204 3.1 MTC.
Grade 12 (Ti-0.3Mo-0.8Ni) provides improved reducing acid resistance at much lower cost than Grade 7 (no Pd). For mild reducing acid conditions, Grade 12 is preferred. Grade 7 is specified for the most severe reducing acid environments where Grade 12 is still inadequate.
