What is Hastelloy C276?

Hastelloy C276 (UNS N10276) is the most widely used Ni-Mo-Cr alloy for severe corrosion service. Mo 15–17% and W 3–4.5% provide outstanding resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion and SCC in reducing and mildly oxidising acids. Carbon ≤0.01% virtually eliminates sensitisation during welding. PREN exceeds 70. Hastelloy C276 fasteners are the standard choice for FGD scrubbers, chlorine production cells, pharmaceutical reactors, pulp and paper bleaching equipment and offshore sour gas service. ASTM B574 governs bar stock.

Hastelloy C276 Fasteners Chemical Composition

Hastelloy C276 fasteners derive their exceptional performance from a carefully balanced composition of nickel, molybdenum and chromium, supplemented by tungsten. Molybdenum and tungsten work synergistically to enhance resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in reducing environments, while chromium provides protection against oxidizing media. The extremely low carbon and silicon content minimizes carbide precipitation at grain boundaries, preserving corrosion resistance even after welding or thermal exposure. This unique alloying strategy allows the material to perform reliably across a wide spectrum of aggressive chemical conditions.

These metallurgical characteristics translate into outstanding engineering benefits for fastener applications. Hastelloy C276 fasteners exhibit excellent resistance to chlorides, sulfuric and hydrochloric acids, and other highly corrosive process chemicals, making them ideal for demanding industries such as chemical processing, marine engineering and pollution control. Their high tensile strength, ductility and resistance to stress corrosion cracking ensure long-term mechanical reliability under extreme temperature and pressure. Combined with excellent weldability and thermal stability, C276 fasteners deliver superior durability, reduced maintenance costs and dependable service life in the harshest operating environments.

Applications

Hastelloy C276 Fasteners Applications

Hastelloy C276 Fasteners from RealBolt Engineering Industries are specified wherever corrosion resistance, elevated-temperature strength, or chemical media compatibility is critical to fastener performance. Primary industries and end-uses for Hastelloy C276 fasteners include flue gas desulfurization, chemical plants, pulp & paper, waste treatment.
Hastelloy C276 bolts, nuts and studs are widely used on reactors, heat exchangers, pumps and piping exposed to hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid and mixed acid environments where stainless steel fasteners can rapidly pit or fail.
The alloy’s high molybdenum content gives C276 fasteners excellent resistance to seawater crevice corrosion, making them suitable for offshore modules, desalination equipment, splash-zone assemblies and brine handling components.
C276 fasteners are commonly specified in scrubbers, ducts, dampers and FGD equipment because they resist acidic chlorides, sulfur compounds and condensates that attack conventional stainless bolting.
When supplied to the required specification, condition and hardness, Hastelloy C276 fasteners can be used for sour gas valves, wellhead equipment, pressure vessels and process skids requiring resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking and hydrogen sulfide environments.
