What is SS 347 / 347H?

SS 347 (UNS S34700) is a niobium-plus-tantalum stabilised austenitic stainless steel. The Nb+Ta addition (≥10×C%) provides carbide stabilisation like SS 321-Ti but with higher creep rupture strength at elevated temperature. SS 347H (0.04–0.10% C) is the high-creep variant for superheater and steam header bolting. SS 347 fasteners are used in high-temperature steam systems, petroleum refinery furnace outlet headers, chemical plant at 500–900°C and aircraft exhaust systems. Niobium stabilisation is preferred over titanium for weld overlay cladding. Governed by ASTM A276 and ASTM A193 B8.

Chemical Composition

SS 347/347H fasteners derive their unique properties from a carefully balanced alloy composition featuring chromium (17-19%) and nickel (9-13%) as primary constituents, with niobium (columbium) stabilization being the defining characteristic of this grade. The niobium addition, typically 10 times the carbon content, prevents chromium carbide precipitation at grain boundaries during welding or elevated temperature exposure. This stabilization mechanism significantly enhances resistance to intergranular corrosion. The 347H variant maintains a controlled carbon range of 0.04-0.10% to optimize high-temperature strength properties.

These compositional advantages translate into exceptional engineering benefits for fastener applications, including superior resistance to intergranular attack in weld-affected zones, excellent oxidation resistance up to 870°C, and reliable mechanical strength across a broad temperature spectrum. The corrosion resistance profile makes these fasteners ideal for chemical processing, petrochemical, and power generation industries where sustained high-temperature exposure and corrosive environments are common. Their stable microstructure ensures long-term joint integrity, reduced maintenance requirements, and dependable performance in critical bolting applications subjected to thermal cycling and aggressive process conditions.

Applications

SS 347 / 347H Fastener Applications

SS 347 / 347H Fasteners from RealBolt Engineering Industries are specified wherever corrosion resistance, elevated-temperature strength, or chemical media compatibility is critical to fastener performance. Primary industries and end-uses for SS 347 / 347H fasteners include petrochemical high-temperature service above 600 deg c, nb-stabilized.
SS 347 and 347H fasteners are widely used in refinery units, heat exchangers, thermal oxidizers, furnace hardware, expansion joints, and pressure equipment where bolting must retain stability in the 425–870°C carbide precipitation range.
The niobium stabilized chemistry helps resist intergranular corrosion after welding, making 347 fasteners suitable for welded manifolds, pipe supports, vessel internals, flanges, and fabricated stainless steel structures exposed to heat.
347H fasteners are selected for improved creep strength in elevated-temperature petrochemical plants, boiler components, superheater supports, steam systems, and power generation hardware requiring reliable long-term bolting performance.
SS 347 fasteners perform well in aircraft exhaust systems, turbine-adjacent brackets, engine test equipment, and cyclic heating environments where austenitic toughness, oxidation resistance, and weld-zone corrosion resistance are important.

Frequently Asked Questions About SS 347 / 347H Fasteners

Browse the questions below to get quick, expert answers about SS 347 / 347H Fasteners — covering alloy specifications (UNS S34700), applicable standards (ASTM A276), temperature ratings, corrosion performance, and how to source certified SS 347 / 347H fasteners from RealBolt Engineering Industries.
Nb forms more stable carbides at high temperature than Ti, giving better creep rupture strength in the 600–900°C range. Nb also does not form a volatile oxide (unlike TiO2 at welding temperatures), making SS 347 preferable for weld overlay and cladding applications.
ASTM A276 (bar), ASTM A193 B8 (studs), ASTM A479 (bar). For high-temperature pressure vessel bolting, SS 347H per ASME Code Case is required. All supplied solution-annealed with EN 10204 3.1 MTC.
Yes — stabilised grades (321 and 347) have significantly better resistance to polythionic acid SCC than unstabilised 304 or 316. NACE RP0170 recommends stabilised grades for refinery maintenance-turnaround fasteners.
SS 347H has controlled carbon (0.04–0.10%) and coarser grain size (≥ASTM No. 7) per ASTM A213. This provides better creep rupture at 600–900°C. Used for superheater header studs and high-temperature pressure vessel bolting per ASME Section VIII.
