What is SS 904L?

SS 904L (UNS N08904) is a high-alloy austenitic stainless steel with Ni 23–28%, Cr 19–23%, Mo 4–5% and Cu 1–2%, providing resistance to sulfuric acid at most concentrations and temperatures. PREN of approximately 36 approaches duplex stainless steels. Not a true ‘stainless steel’ — classified as a nickel alloy in some codes. SS 904L fasteners bridge the gap between SS 316L and Hastelloy alloys for sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid and seawater service. Used in chemical plant, desalination and offshore applications. Governed by ASTM A276 and ASTM B649.

Chemical Composition

SS 904L Fasteners derive their exceptional performance from a carefully balanced composition of chromium, nickel, molybdenum and copper. The high nickel and molybdenum content significantly enhances resistance to chloride-induced pitting and crevice corrosion, while copper additions improve resistance to sulfuric acid environments. Low carbon content, capped at 0.020%, minimises the risk of sensitisation and intergranular corrosion during welding or thermal exposure, ensuring long-term structural integrity in demanding fastening applications.

These alloying characteristics translate into superior engineering benefits, including outstanding resistance to acidic, chloride-rich and marine environments where standard austenitic stainless fasteners would fail prematurely. SS 904L offers reliable mechanical performance, good ductility and weldability, alongside stable strength retention at moderately elevated temperatures. Its excellent corrosion resistance reduces maintenance costs and extends service life, making it highly suitable for fasteners used in chemical processing, offshore, marine and pollution-control industries requiring dependable, corrosion-resistant fastening solutions.

Applications

SS 904L Fasteners Applications

SS 904L Fasteners from RealBolt Engineering Industries are specified wherever corrosion resistance, elevated-temperature strength, or chemical media compatibility is critical to fastener performance. Primary industries and end-uses for SS 904L fasteners include sulfuric acid, fertilizer plants, seawater, pharmaceutical processing.
SS 904L fasteners are widely used on vessels, pumps, valves, heat exchangers and pipe flanges handling sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid and mixed acid streams where 316L may suffer rapid attack.
The elevated molybdenum and nickel content gives 904L bolts and nuts strong resistance to chloride pitting, crevice corrosion and seawater atmosphere exposure on offshore platforms, docks and coastal structures.
904L stainless steel fasteners are suitable for scrubbers, stack liners, ducts and wet gas handling equipment where acidic condensates and chlorides create aggressive service conditions.
SS 904L threaded components provide cleanability, low carbon weld adjacent stability and corrosion resistance for equipment exposed to cleaning chemicals, bleaching media and high purity process fluids.

Frequently Asked Questions About SS 904L Fasteners

Browse the questions below to get quick, expert answers about SS 904L Fasteners — covering alloy specifications (UNS N08904), applicable standards (ASTM B649), temperature ratings, corrosion performance, and how to source certified SS 904L fasteners from RealBolt Engineering Industries.
SS 904L fasteners are used in phosphoric acid plant (scrubber flanges, heat exchanger channel bolting), desalination plant (RO membrane housing, brine line flanges), and chemical plant handling dilute-to-medium sulfuric acid where 316L is inadequate.
ASTM B649 is the primary standard for UNS N08904 (904L) bar and rod. ASTM B677 covers pipe. ASME SB-649 for pressure-vessel applications. Note: some codes classify 904L as a nickel alloy (B-series ASTM), not a standard stainless (A-series).
Both are Cu-containing stainless alloys with H2SO4 resistance. Alloy 20 has higher Ni (32–38%) and Cu (3–4%) giving better H2SO4 resistance at higher concentrations. 904L is slightly cheaper. For concentrated H2SO4 above 70%, neither is adequate — Alloy 20 Cb3 or Hastelloy C2000 is required.
Yes. With PREN ≈36, 904L approaches duplex 2205 (PREN ≈35) in pitting resistance. It resists seawater pitting and crevice corrosion better than 316L (PREN ≈25). For fully submerged seawater, super-duplex 2507 (PREN ≥42) is preferred for critical bolted joints.
