SS 17-4 PH Fasteners derive their strength from a precipitation-hardening system built around chromium, nickel and copper. Chromium content of approximately 15-17.5% provides the base corrosion resistance, while nickel (3-5%) stabilizes the microstructure and improves toughness. Copper additions, typically 3-5%, enable the formation of fine copper-rich precipitates during aging, which significantly increase strength without compromising ductility. Small additions of niobium and tantalum further refine grain structure and stabilize carbides, enhancing dimensional stability during heat treatment.
This carefully balanced composition allows 17-4 PH fasteners to achieve exceptional tensile and yield strength combined with good corrosion resistance in mildly aggressive environments, including marine and industrial atmospheres. The material also retains mechanical performance at moderately elevated temperatures, making it suitable for aerospace, oil and gas, and high-strength structural applications. Its ability to be heat treated to various strength levels while maintaining toughness makes it a preferred choice for critical fastening applications requiring both strength and corrosion resistance.
Specifications
SS 17-4 PH Fasteners combine precipitation-hardened stainless steel strength with corrosion-resistant performance, with specifications defined by precise dimensions, mechanical properties, and technical data suited to demanding service conditions. Their balanced hardness, tensile capability, and dimensional tolerances make them reliable for engineered assemblies.
