EN 24 (4340 equivalent) is a low alloy steel strengthened primarily through nickel, chromium and molybdenum additions. Nickel enhances toughness and impact resistance at lower temperatures, while chromium improves hardenability and wear resistance. Molybdenum minimises temper embrittlement and supports strength retention during tempering. Carbon content, typically around 0.4%, provides the base hardness achievable through heat treatment. This balanced composition allows deep hardening in thick sections, ensuring uniform mechanical properties throughout heavy fasteners without sacrificing ductility or fatigue performance.
These alloying characteristics make EN 24 fasteners ideal for high-stress structural, automotive and heavy engineering applications requiring superior tensile strength, fatigue resistance and shock load capacity. Its excellent hardenability allows through-hardening in large diameter bolts and studs, while controlled tempering provides an optimal balance between strength and toughness. Though not stainless, EN 24 offers good resistance to general atmospheric corrosion when properly coated or plated. Its reliability under dynamic loading, combined with proven machinability and weldability, makes it a preferred choice for critical fastening applications in demanding mechanical systems.
