What is Ferralium 255?

Ferralium 255 (UNS S32550, ASTM A182 F61) is a super-duplex stainless steel with Cr 24–27%, Ni 4.5–6.5%, Mo 2.9–3.9% and Cu 1.5–2.5%. The significant copper addition (higher than Zeron 100) provides exceptional resistance to reducing acids — particularly H2SO4, HCl and phosphoric acid. PREN ≥40. Available in seawater-resistant condition. Ferralium 255 fasteners are used in chemical plant handling sulfuric acid and mixed acid streams, phosphoric acid plant, seawater desalination and offshore structural connections where Cu-enhanced acid resistance combined with chloride pitting resistance is required.

Ferralium 255 Fasteners Chemical Composition

Ferralium 255 fasteners derive their exceptional performance from a carefully balanced composition of chromium, nickel, molybdenum, copper and nitrogen. Chromium provides the foundation for passive film formation, while molybdenum and nitrogen work synergistically to enhance pitting and crevice corrosion resistance in aggressive chloride environments. Copper additions further improve resistance to acidic media, and nickel stabilises the duplex austenitic-ferritic microstructure, ensuring optimal mechanical strength and toughness balance across a wide temperature range.

This engineered composition delivers superior corrosion resistance, high mechanical strength and excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking, making Ferralium 255 fasteners ideal for offshore, marine, chemical processing and desalination applications. Their high yield strength allows for reduced fastener sizing without compromising joint integrity, while their resistance to hydrogen embrittlement and pitting ensures long-term reliability in demanding, corrosive service conditions where standard stainless steel fasteners would fail prematurely.

Applications

Ferralium 255 Fastener Applications

Ferralium 255 Fasteners from RealBolt Engineering Industries are specified wherever corrosion resistance, elevated-temperature strength, or chemical media compatibility is critical to fastener performance. Primary industries and end-uses for Ferralium 255 fasteners include cu-bearing; outstanding strength and corrosion balance; offshore.
Ferralium 255 bolts, nuts, washers, studs and socket screws are widely selected for seawater pumps, valves, shafts, filtration systems, shipboard equipment, splash-zone structures and other marine assemblies where 316 stainless may suffer rapid chloride pitting.
The high strength and chloride stress corrosion cracking resistance of UNS S32550 fasteners make them suitable for offshore platforms, subsea equipment, wellhead components, manifolds and pressure-containing assemblies exposed to brines, sour production fluids and aggressive coastal atmospheres.
Ferralium 255 fasteners are used on heat exchangers, evaporators, desalination units, scrubbers, piping flanges and chemical handling equipment that require resistance to acids, chlorides and crevice corrosion while maintaining high clamp load capability.
Super duplex Ferralium 255 fastening components perform well in bleach plant equipment, flue gas desulfurization systems, wastewater treatment hardware and other oxidizing chloride environments where long service life and reduced maintenance are critical.

Frequently Asked Questions About Ferralium 255 Fasteners

Browse the questions below to get quick, expert answers about Ferralium 255 Fasteners — covering alloy specifications (UNS S32550/F61), applicable standards (ASTM A182), temperature ratings, corrosion performance, and how to source certified Ferralium 255 fasteners from RealBolt Engineering Industries.
Ferralium 255 has Cu 1.5–2.5% (vs trace in 2507), providing markedly better resistance to H2SO4, HCl and phosphoric acid in dilute-to-medium concentration ranges. 2507 is superior in pure seawater (higher PREN); Ferralium 255 is preferred where the process includes both chloride and reducing acid exposure.
ASTM A182 Grade F61 covers S32550 (Ferralium 255) flanges and bar. ASTM A276 S32550 for bar. EN 10088-3 1.4507 is the European equivalent. Supplied solution-annealed with EN 10204 3.1 MTC and ferrite content measurement.
S32550 is listed in NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 Part 3. Maximum hardness ≤36 HRC, solution-annealed condition required. We supply with NACE MTC 3.1, hardness survey, PMI and ferrite measurement for sour service projects.
Ferralium 255 ferrite content is typically 40–55% (Ferrite Number FN 40–55) in the solution-annealed condition. Optimal duplex microstructure is 45–55% ferrite. Ferrite is measured per ASTM E562 (image analysis) or magnetically per AWS A4.2. Reported on MTC for offshore projects.
