Product Overview

What are Hastelloy C276 Bolts?

Hastelloy C276 bolts are nickel-molybdenum-chromium alloy fasteners machined from UNS N10276 bar stock conforming to ASTM B574. The alloy’s exceptional corrosion resistance stems from its high molybdenum content (15-17%) combined with tungsten (3-4.5%), which together suppress pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking across a broader range of aggressive media than virtually any other wrought nickel alloy.

With a PREN exceeding 70 and resistance to both oxidising and reducing acid environments, Hastelloy C276 bolts are the fastener of choice for chemical process equipment, flue gas scrubbers, pharmaceutical reactors, and offshore installations handling wet chlorine, hydrochloric acid, and mixed acid streams. These bolts are specified under NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 for sour-service applications and are widely used wherever standard stainless or even Inconel 625 fasteners fall short.

Material Chemistry

Hastelloy C276 Chemical Composition

Hastelloy C276 Bolts derive their exceptional acid corrosion resistance from a precisely controlled nickel-molybdenum-chromium composition per ASTM. High molybdenum and tungsten content suppresses pitting and reducing-acid attack; ultra-low carbon (0.01% max) eliminates sensitization risk in welded assemblies. Full elemental composition is certified in the EN 10204 MTC supplied with every Hastelloy C276 bolts order from RealBolt.

Chemical Composition per ASTM B574

Iron (Fe)4.0-7.0%
Tungsten (W)3.0-4.5%

Why Hastelloy C276 Alloy Composition Matters for Bolts

Mo (15–17%) + W (3–4.5%) — Broadest Reducing Acid Resistance
The combined molybdenum and tungsten content gives Hastelloy C276 a PREN exceeding 70 and outstanding resistance to hydrochloric, sulfuric, and phosphoric acids in both oxidising and reducing conditions — a dual capability no single-element alloy can replicate. This is critical for bolted closures on reactors handling mixed acid streams.
Ultra-Low Carbon (0.01% max) — No Sensitisation Risk
The extremely low carbon ceiling eliminates carbide precipitation at grain boundaries during welding or elevated-temperature service. Hastelloy C276 bolts used in welded assemblies retain full corrosion resistance in the heat-affected zone without any post-weld heat treatment requirement.
Cr (14.5–16.5%) — Oxidising Environment Stability
Chromium provides a stable passive film in mildly oxidising media such as nitric acid and ferric chloride solutions, complementing the reducing-acid protection from molybdenum and tungsten. This dual-environment capability makes C276 bolts uniquely versatile across chemical process plant where process chemistry can shift.

Industry Applications

Hastelloy C276 Bolts Applications — Industries & End Uses

Hastelloy C276 Bolts from RealBolt are specified across chemical processing, pharmaceutical, oil and gas, and FGD where excellent corrosion resistance and 800 MPa tensile strength are required for reliable fastener performance. Click each industry below for detailed application examples. Select an industry below to see specific Hastelloy C276 bolts application details and RealBolt stock availability.
Hastelloy C276 stud bolts and hex bolts are the standard specification for flanged closures on hydrochloric acid reactors, sulfuric acid dilution systems, and mixed acid process vessels. The alloy resists both oxidising and reducing acid attack, making it the only practical fastener material where process chemistry alternates between acid types. Widely specified per ASME VIII Div.1 and PED 2014/68/EU.
Absorber tower internals, spray header flanges, and ductwork connections in wet FGD scrubbers operate in saturated HCl and SO2-bearing condensate at temperatures up to 80°C. Hastelloy C276 bolts resist chloride pitting and crevice corrosion under bolt heads in these conditions where duplex stainless and even 904L fail within months.
Reactor closure bolts, agitator flange fasteners, and heat exchanger cover studs in pharmaceutical API manufacturing require full resistance to halogenated solvents, acetic acid, and chlorinated intermediates. Hastelloy C276 meets FDA material traceability requirements and is compatible with CIP/SIP sterilisation cycles without surface degradation.
Chlorine dioxide bleaching stages expose fasteners to highly aggressive oxidising chlorine compounds at elevated temperatures. Hastelloy C276 bolts are specified for digester flanges, bleach washer covers, and chlorination tower connections where chloride stress corrosion cracking eliminates austenitic stainless options entirely.

Contact our technical team directly for project-specific guidance on Hastelloy C276 bolts selection and pricing.
Hastelloy C276 hex bolts are manufactured to DIN 931 (metric partial thread), DIN 933 (metric full thread), ISO 4014 and ISO 4017, and ASME B18.2.1 for inch hex and heavy hex configurations. Stud bolts for flanged connections are produced per ASME B16.5 (Class 150 to 2500) and MSS SP-75 for high-pressure piping. Non-standard thread forms including BSW, BSF, and BSPP are available on request with a 15 working day lead time. All fasteners are supplied with EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificates as standard.
Both alloys are premium nickel-based fastener materials, but they serve different corrosion environments. Hastelloy C276 outperforms Inconel 625 in reducing acid media – particularly hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid below 70% concentration, and mixed halide streams – due to its higher molybdenum (15-17% vs 8-10%) and the addition of tungsten (3-4.5%). Inconel 625 has superior performance in seawater immersion and oxidising chloride environments due to its higher niobium content and PREN of 51+. For chemical process reactors handling HCl or mixed acids, C276 is the correct specification. For offshore structural bolting in seawater, Inconel 625 is typically preferred. Consult our engineering team for a definitive recommendation based on your process chemistry.
Yes – Hastelloy C276 (UNS N10276) is listed in NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 Part 3 for use in H2S-containing sour service environments. Compliance requires that finished fasteners meet a maximum hardness of 35 HRC (241 HB). All our C276 bolts are supplied with a hardness survey report confirming compliance. For Class 900-2500 sour service stud bolt sets, we supply a full NACE MR0175 compliance package including hardness survey, PMI report, and EN 10204 3.1 MTC as standard.
In oxidising atmospheres, Hastelloy C276 bolts maintain structural integrity and corrosion resistance up to approximately 1040°C. In reducing or mixed gas environments, the practical upper limit is 760°C due to the risk of precipitation of secondary phases that can reduce ductility and corrosion resistance with prolonged exposure above this temperature. For continuous high-temperature service above 500°C in reducing atmospheres, consult our engineering team – Hastelloy C22 or Inconel 625 may be more appropriate depending on the specific thermal cycle and gas composition.
