Product Overview

What are Hastelloy C276 Studs?

Hastelloy C276 studs are nickel-molybdenum-chromium alloy fasteners machined from UNS N10276 bar stock conforming to ASTM B574. The alloy’s exceptional corrosion resistance stems from its high molybdenum content (15-17%) combined with tungsten (3-4.5%), which together suppress pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking across a broad range of aggressive chemical environments.

With a PREN exceeding 70, Hastelloy C276 studs outperform every standard stainless steel and most nickel alloys in oxidising and reducing acid service. These studs are routinely specified under NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 for sour gas processing, chemical reactor closures, FGD scrubber flanges, and pharmaceutical pressure vessel connections worldwide.

Material Chemistry

Hastelloy C276 Chemical Composition

Hastelloy C276 Studs derive their exceptional acid corrosion resistance from a precisely controlled nickel-molybdenum-chromium composition per ASTM. High molybdenum and tungsten content suppresses pitting and reducing-acid attack; ultra-low carbon (0.01% max) eliminates sensitization risk in welded assemblies. Full elemental composition is certified in the EN 10204 MTC supplied with every Hastelloy C276 studs order from RealBolt.

Why Hastelloy C276 Alloy Composition Matters for Studs

Mo (15–17%) + W (3–4.5%) — Dual Reducing Acid Resistance
The combined molybdenum and tungsten content gives Hastelloy C276 studs a PREN exceeding 70, providing outstanding resistance to reducing acids including hydrochloric, sulfuric, and phosphoric acid — environments that rapidly attack standard stainless steel fasteners.
Ultra-Low Carbon (0.01% max) — Sensitisation Prevention
The extremely low carbon ceiling prevents carbide precipitation at grain boundaries during welding or elevated-temperature service. Hastelloy C276 studs retain full intergranular corrosion resistance in the as-welded condition without any post-weld heat treatment.
Cr (14.5–16.5%) — Oxidising Environment Stability
Chromium provides a stable passive film in mildly oxidising conditions and wet chlorine environments. Combined with molybdenum, this dual protection mechanism makes C276 studs uniquely suited to mixed oxidising-reducing process streams where no single-element alloy performs adequately.

?? Anti-galling: Use nickel-based anti-seize (Molykote P-37 or Bostik Never-Seez Pure Nickel). Lubricated values assume K=0.15. Never use copper-based anti-seize on nickel alloys - galvanic incompatibility accelerates thread corrosion.

Industry Applications

Hastelloy C276 Studs Applications — Industries & End Uses

Hastelloy C276 Studs from RealBolt are specified across chemical processing, pharmaceutical, oil and gas, and FGD where excellent corrosion resistance and 800 MPa tensile strength are required for reliable fastener performance. Click each industry below for detailed application examples. Select an industry below to see specific Hastelloy C276 studs application details and RealBolt stock availability.
Hastelloy C276 stud bolt sets are the standard specification for pressure vessel nozzle flanges, reactor closure heads, and heat exchanger channel covers in hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, and mixed halide process streams. Specified under ASME VIII Div.1 and TEMA Class R for the most aggressive chemical service environments.
FGD scrubber internals, absorber tower flanges, and ductwork connections operate in saturated HCl and SO2-bearing gas at elevated temperatures. Hastelloy C276 studs resist wet chlorine attack and sulfurous acid condensate that destroys duplex stainless and alloy 904L fasteners within months.
NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 compliant Hastelloy C276 studs are specified for sour gas processing flanges, amine treater vessels, and H2S-bearing wellhead connections where both sulfide stress cracking resistance and pitting immunity are simultaneously required. Hardness controlled to 35 HRC max.
Hastelloy C276 studs are used in pharmaceutical reactor closures, sterile process vessel flanges, and CIP/SIP system connections where FDA-compliant materials, crevice corrosion resistance, and cleanability under aggressive sanitising agents are mandatory requirements.

Hastelloy C276 Studs — Frequently Asked Questions

Browse expert answers to common questions about Hastelloy C276 Studs from RealBolt — covering acid corrosion resistance, NACE MR0175 compliance, ASTM standards, available sizes, and MTC documentation. Hastelloy C276 studs are manufactured to DIN 938 (short end engagement), DIN 939 (long end engagement), and ASME B18.31.2 for continuous thread studs in inch dimensions. Flange stud bolt sets for ASME B16.5 Class 150 through Class 2500 flanges are supplied per ASME B16.5 Appendix E thread dimensions. MSS SP-75 stud bolts for high-pressure fittings are also available. Custom thread forms including BSW, BSF, and BSPP are produced on request with a 15 working day lead time.
Yes – Hastelloy C276 (UNS N10276) is listed in NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 Part 3 Table B.4 for use in H2S-containing sour service environments. Compliance requires hardness to be controlled at 35 HRC maximum, which is verified by Rockwell hardness testing on each production lot. All sour service stud shipments include a hardness survey report alongside the EN 10204 3.1 MTC. Additional TPI-witnessed 3.2 certification is available for critical wellhead and pressure vessel applications.
Both alloys are premium nickel-based fastener materials, but they serve different corrosion environments. Hastelloy C276 (Mo 15-17%, W 3-4.5%) is superior in reducing acid environments – hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, and wet chlorine – where its PREN exceeds 70. Inconel 625 (Mo 8-10%, Nb 3.15-4.15%) performs better in seawater immersion and oxidising acid service and offers higher tensile strength at 758 MPa versus C276’s 690 MPa. For mixed acid or HCl-dominant process streams, C276 studs are the correct specification. For offshore structural flanges and seawater service, Inconel 625 stud bolts are preferred.
Always use a nickel-based anti-seize compound such as Molykote P-37, Jet-Lube KOPR-KOTE Pure Nickel, or Bostik Never-Seez Pure Nickel. Apply to both threaded ends and the nut bearing face before assembly. Reduce target torque values by approximately 20% compared to dry assembly values. Copper-based and zinc-based anti-seize compounds must never be used on Hastelloy C276 or any nickel alloy fastener – the galvanic potential difference between copper and nickel accelerates crevice corrosion at the thread interface, particularly in wet process environments.
