Product Overview

What are Hastelloy G35 Bolts?

Hastelloy G35 bolts are nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy fasteners manufactured from UNS N06035 bar stock conforming to ASTM B574. The alloy’s high chromium content (33.2-36.2%) combined with molybdenum (7.6-9.0%) delivers exceptional resistance to oxidising acids, particularly concentrated nitric acid and mixed acid environments, at a minimum tensile strength of 690 MPa in the annealed condition.

The elevated chromium level gives Hastelloy G35 a PREN exceeding 48, providing outstanding resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in aggressive oxidising chloride media. Hastelloy G35 bolts are specified for phosphoric acid plants, nitric acid reactors, and chemical process equipment where standard nickel alloys and stainless steels fail prematurely under oxidising conditions.

Material Chemistry

Hastelloy G35 Chemical Composition

Hastelloy G35 Bolts derive their exceptional acid corrosion resistance from a precisely controlled nickel-molybdenum-chromium composition per ASTM. High molybdenum and tungsten content suppresses pitting and reducing-acid attack; ultra-low carbon (0.01% max) eliminates sensitization risk in welded assemblies. Full elemental composition is certified in the EN 10204 MTC supplied with every Hastelloy G35 bolts order from RealBolt.

Why Hastelloy G35 Alloy Composition Matters for Bolts

Cr (33.2–36.2%) — Oxidising Acid Resistance
The exceptionally high chromium content is the defining characteristic of Hastelloy G35. It forms a highly stable passive oxide film that resists attack in concentrated nitric acid, mixed nitric/hydrofluoric acid, and other strongly oxidising environments where lower-chromium nickel alloys corrode rapidly.
Mo (7.6–9.0%) — Pitting & Crevice Resistance
Molybdenum reinforces resistance to localised corrosion, particularly under bolt head bearing surfaces and in crevices formed at gasketed flange joints. This is critical in mixed acid service where both oxidising and reducing conditions may alternate during process cycles.
Ultra-Low Carbon (0.05% max) — Sensitisation Prevention
The controlled low carbon content prevents chromium carbide precipitation at grain boundaries during welding or elevated-temperature service. Hastelloy G35 bolts retain full intergranular corrosion resistance in the as-welded condition without requiring post-weld heat treatment.

?? Anti-galling: Use nickel-based anti-seize (Molykote P-37 or equivalent). Lubricated values assume K=0.15. Never use copper-based anti-seize on nickel alloys - galvanic incompatibility accelerates thread corrosion.

Industry Applications

Hastelloy G35 Bolts Applications — Industries & End Uses

Hastelloy G35 Bolts from RealBolt are specified across chemical processing, pharmaceutical, oil and gas, and FGD where excellent corrosion resistance and 800 MPa tensile strength are required for reliable fastener performance. Click each industry below for detailed application examples. Select an industry below to see specific Hastelloy G35 bolts application details and RealBolt stock availability.
Hastelloy G35 hex bolts and stud bolt sets are the preferred specification for reactor vessel closures, column flange connections, and heat exchanger covers in nitric acid, mixed nitric/hydrofluoric acid, and phosphoric acid plants. The alloy’s 33-36% chromium content provides corrosion rates below 0.1 mm/year in boiling concentrated HNO3 – performance unmatched by any standard stainless steel or lower-chromium nickel alloy.
Flange bolt sets for phosphoric acid evaporators, ammonium nitrate reactor flanges, and urea plant pressure vessel nozzle connections. Hastelloy G35 bolts resist the combined attack of phosphoric acid, fluoride ions, and oxidising conditions present throughout wet-process phosphoric acid production, where 316L and even 904L stainless steels suffer rapid intergranular attack.
Stud bolts and hex bolts for chlorine dioxide bleaching tower flanges, hypochlorite stage pipe connections, and bleach plant heat exchanger covers. The high chromium and molybdenum combination resists the oxidising halide environment of modern ECF and TCF bleaching sequences at temperatures up to 90°C.
Hastelloy G35 bolts are specified for spent nuclear fuel reprocessing equipment, nitric acid dissolution vessel closures, and radioactive liquid storage tank nozzle flanges. The alloy’s resistance to concentrated HNO3 at elevated temperatures and its low corrosion product release rate make it suitable for environments where contamination control is critical.

Hastelloy G35 Bolts — Frequently Asked Questions

Browse expert answers to common questions about Hastelloy G35 Bolts from RealBolt — covering acid corrosion resistance, NACE MR0175 compliance, ASTM standards, available sizes, and MTC documentation. Contact our technical team directly for project-specific guidance on Hastelloy G35 bolts selection and pricing.
Hastelloy G35 hex bolts are manufactured to DIN 931 (metric partial thread), DIN 933 (metric full thread), ISO 4014/4017, and ASME B18.2.1 for inch hex and heavy hex configurations. Stud bolts for flange applications are produced per ASME B16.5 and MSS SP-75. Non-standard thread forms including BSW, BSF, and BSPP are available on request with a typical lead time of 15 working days. All dimensions are verified against calibrated gauges traceable to national standards.
Hastelloy G35 contains 33.2-36.2% chromium compared to approximately 14.5-16.5% in Hastelloy C276. In strongly oxidising environments such as concentrated nitric acid, high chromium content is the dominant factor controlling corrosion resistance. C276’s higher molybdenum content provides superior performance in reducing acid environments, but in oxidising HNO3 service, G35 outperforms C276 by a significant margin – often showing corrosion rates 5-10 times lower. For mixed acid or alternating oxidising/reducing service, consult our engineering team for alloy selection guidance.
Yes – Hastelloy G35 is one of the most widely specified alloys for wet-process phosphoric acid production. The combination of high chromium and molybdenum provides resistance to the complex mixture of phosphoric acid, hydrofluoric acid, sulphuric acid, and fluorosilicic acid present in evaporator and clarifier circuits. Hastelloy G35 bolts are used on evaporator flange connections, pump casing joints, and heat exchanger covers where 316L, 904L, and even 2205 duplex stainless steels suffer unacceptable corrosion rates.
In oxidising atmospheres, Hastelloy G35 maintains good oxidation resistance up to approximately 1040°C due to its high chromium content forming a stable Cr2O3 scale. For bolted flange applications in process service, the practical upper temperature limit is governed by the flange rating and gasket material rather than the bolt alloy. In continuous elevated-temperature service above 650°C, creep relaxation should be considered in bolt load calculations. Contact our engineering team for high-temperature torque retention data and re-torquing recommendations.
