Product Overview

What are Monel 400 Screws?

Monel 400 screws are nickel-copper alloy fasteners machined from UNS N04400 bar stock conforming to ASTM B164. The alloy’s single-phase solid-solution structure – comprising 63-70% nickel and 28-34% copper – delivers a minimum tensile strength of 480 MPa in the annealed condition, with excellent toughness retained down to cryogenic temperatures.

Monel 400 screws resist corrosion in seawater, hydrofluoric acid, and alkaline media at a level unmatched by standard stainless steels. They are widely specified under NACE MR0175 for sour-service valve trim, marine fastening, and chemical process equipment where galvanic compatibility with copper alloy components is also required.

Material Chemistry

Monel 400 Chemical Composition

Monel 400 Screws are produced from a nickel-copper alloy containing 63% minimum nickel and 27–34% copper, with elemental limits certified to ASTM. The nickel base delivers seawater and HF acid immunity; copper additions enhance ductility; and in Monel K500, aluminium and titanium additions enable age-hardened strength above 896 MPa.

Chemical Composition per ASTM B164

ElementComposition (%)
Nickel (Ni)63.0% min
Copper (Cu)28.0-34.0%
Iron (Fe)2.5% max
Manganese (Mn)2.0% max
Carbon (C)0.30% max
Silicon (Si)0.50% max
Sulfur (S)0.024% max

Why Monel 400 Alloy Composition Matters for Screws

Ni (63% min) — Corrosion Resistance in Reducing Acids
The high nickel base gives Monel 400 screws outstanding resistance to hydrofluoric acid, sulfuric acid, and alkaline media. This makes them the preferred fastener choice for HF alkylation units and caustic handling equipment where stainless steel fails rapidly.
Cu (28–34%) — Seawater and Marine Immunity
The copper content provides natural resistance to biofouling and seawater corrosion. Monel 400 screws perform reliably in continuous seawater immersion without pitting under screw heads — a critical advantage for marine heat exchangers and offshore valve trim.
Single-Phase Solid Solution — No Sensitisation Risk
Unlike duplex or austenitic stainless steels, Monel 400 has no carbide precipitation risk during machining or moderate heat exposure. Screws retain full corrosion resistance in the as-machined condition without any post-fabrication heat treatment.

?? Anti-galling: Use nickel-based anti-seize (Molykote P-37 or Bostik Never-Seez Pure Nickel). Lubricated values assume K=0.15. Never use copper-based anti-seize on nickel-copper alloys - it masks galvanic activity and accelerates thread corrosion.

Industry Applications

Monel 400 Screws Applications — Industries & End Uses

Monel 400 Screws from RealBolt are specified across marine, HF alkylation, desalination, and chemical processing where excellent corrosion resistance and 550 MPa tensile strength are required for reliable fastener performance. Click each industry below for detailed application examples. Select an industry below to see specific Monel 400 screws application details and RealBolt stock availability.
Monel 400 machine screws and hex screws are the standard fastener for hydrofluoric acid alkylation unit valve bodies, pump casings, and piping flanges. NACE MR0175 compliant for H2S sour service. Specified in Shell DEP and ExxonMobil EMSP for HF-service equipment where no stainless steel grade is acceptable.
Hex screws and socket head cap screws for seawater pump internals, marine heat exchanger tube sheet connections, propeller shaft brackets, and offshore platform splash-zone structural attachments. Monel 400 resists biofouling and crevice corrosion under screw heads in continuous seawater immersion without protective coatings.
Fasteners for reactor vessel closures, agitator shaft assemblies, and piping connections in sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, caustic soda, and chlorinated solvent environments. Monel 400 screws outperform SS 316L in reducing acid service and are specified where mixed acid and alkali exposure occurs in the same system.
Monel 400 screws are used in multi-stage flash (MSF) and reverse osmosis (RO) desalination plant heat exchanger assemblies, brine heater connections, and high-pressure membrane housing closures. The alloy’s resistance to chloride-bearing brine at elevated temperatures makes it the preferred fastener material over duplex stainless steel in high-salinity stages.

Monel 400 Screws — Frequently Asked Questions

Monel 400 screws are available in hex head (DIN 933 / ISO 4017), socket head cap (DIN 912 / ISO 4762), pan head, countersunk, and cheese head configurations. Drive styles include hex socket (Allen), Phillips, slotted, and Torx on request. Inch sizes are manufactured per ASME B18.6.3 (machine screws) and ASME B18.3 (socket head cap screws). Custom head profiles and non-standard drive forms are available with a 15 working day lead time.
Monel 400 screws are rated for continuous service up to 480°C in oxidising atmospheres. In reducing or inert atmospheres, the alloy retains useful strength to approximately 600°C. Above 480°C in air, surface oxidation accelerates and Monel K-500 or a nickel-chromium alloy should be considered. For cryogenic applications, Monel 400 retains full toughness down to -196°C with no ductile-to-brittle transition, making it suitable for LNG and liquid nitrogen service.
Monel 400 screws can be used with stainless steel flanges in most environments, but galvanic compatibility must be assessed. In seawater or conductive electrolytes, Monel 400 (more noble) will accelerate corrosion of any active metal in contact. When mating with SS 316L or carbon steel, use insulating washers and sleeves in immersed seawater service. In atmospheric or dry process environments, galvanic risk is negligible and no isolation is required. Always consult a corrosion engineer for mixed-metal assemblies in aggressive media.
Yes – Monel 400 is one of very few engineering alloys with genuine resistance to anhydrous and aqueous hydrofluoric acid across a wide concentration range. Monel 400 screws are the standard fastener for HF alkylation unit valve bodies, pump casings, and piping per industry practice. The alloy must be in the annealed condition (hardness below 35 HRC per NACE MR0175) for sour HF service. Cold-worked or heavily machined screws must be stress-relief annealed before use in HF environments to prevent stress corrosion cracking.
