Product Overview

What are SS 410 / 416 Screws?

SS 410 / 416 screws are high-strength, martensitic stainless steel fasteners manufactured from ASTM A276/A493 bar stock, primarily UNS S41000 and S41600. These grades are known for their excellent machinability, moderate corrosion resistance, and high mechanical strength after heat treatment. SS 410 offers a good balance of hardness and toughness, while SS 416 is optimized for superior machinability due to its higher sulfur content.

Both grades are magnetic and can be hardened by heat treatment, making them ideal for applications requiring wear resistance, moderate corrosion protection, and precise threading. SS 410 / 416 screws are widely used in pump assemblies, valves, food processing equipment, and general engineering where stainless steel performance is required at a competitive cost.

Material Chemistry

SS 410 / 416 Chemical Composition

SS 410 / 416 Screws are manufactured from an iron-chromium-nickel alloy with chromium (16–26%), nickel (8–28%), and grade-specific molybdenum additions per ASTM and ASTM A193/A194. Chromium content governs the self-healing passive oxide film; molybdenum (2–6%) enhances chloride pitting resistance; and carbon content determines sensitization risk in welded assemblies.

Why SS 410 / 416 Alloy Composition Matters for Screws

Cr (11.5–14%) — Corrosion & Oxidation Resistance
Chromium content provides a passive oxide layer, giving SS 410 / 416 screws moderate resistance to atmospheric and mild chemical corrosion, suitable for indoor and light industrial environments.
S (0.15% min in 416) — Machinability
SS 416’s high sulfur content dramatically improves machinability, allowing for precise threads and tight tolerances, making it ideal for high-volume screw production.
Martensitic Structure — Hardening Capability
Both grades can be hardened by heat treatment, achieving high strength and wear resistance, which is essential for screws subjected to repeated assembly and disassembly.

SS 410 / 416 screws are available to DIN 912 (socket head cap), DIN 963 (slotted flat head), ISO 4762 (hex socket), and ASME B18.3/B18.6.3 (inch series). Custom thread forms (UNC, UNF, BSW, BSF) and special head types can be supplied on request with short lead times.
Use molybdenum-based or PTFE anti-seize compound on SS 410 / 416 screws to prevent galling and seizing during assembly. Avoid copper-based anti-seize, as it may cause galvanic corrosion. Lubricated torque values should be reduced by 20% compared to dry assembly.
SS 410 / 416 screws offer moderate corrosion resistance and are suitable for indoor, sheltered outdoor, and mildly corrosive environments. They are not recommended for marine or highly corrosive chemical exposure. For such applications, use SS 316 or duplex stainless steel screws.
No formal MOQ for standard sizes (M4-M16) held in stock – single-piece orders are accepted for urgent needs. Custom sizes or head types may require a minimum batch of 10 kg. Quantity discounts apply at 100, 500, and 1000 pieces.
