Product Overview

What are Duplex 2304 Studs?

Duplex 2304 studs are high-strength, corrosion-resistant fasteners manufactured from UNS S32304 duplex stainless steel bar or rod, conforming to ASTM A276 and ASTM A479. This alloy features a balanced dual-phase microstructure of austenite and ferrite, delivering superior mechanical strength (min. 620 MPa tensile) and enhanced resistance to stress corrosion cracking compared to standard austenitic grades.

With a PREN of 26-28, Duplex 2304 studs are widely specified for bolted joints in chloride-bearing environments, including seawater, chemical process piping, and desalination plants. Their low nickel content makes them a cost-effective alternative to 316L and 2205 for moderate corrosion applications, while maintaining excellent weldability and toughness down to -50°C.

Material Chemistry

Duplex 2304 Chemical Composition

Duplex 2304 Studs are produced from a ferritic-austenitic steel with chromium (21–23%), molybdenum (3–3.5%), and nitrogen (0.14–0.20%) controlled per ASTM. Nitrogen is the critical alloying element: it simultaneously raises PREN to ≥ 35 for chloride pitting resistance and strengthens the austenite phase to achieve 450 MPa minimum yield — twice that of SS 316L.

Chemical Composition per ASTM A276 / A479

Why Duplex 2304 Alloy Composition Matters for Studs

Cr (21.5–24.5%) — Pitting & Crevice Resistance
High chromium content provides Duplex 2304 studs with a PREN of 26–28, ensuring strong resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-rich environments such as seawater and process brines.
N (0.05–0.20%) — Strength & SCC Resistance
Nitrogen addition increases yield strength and enhances resistance to stress corrosion cracking, making Duplex 2304 studs reliable for bolted joints exposed to cyclic loading and temperature fluctuations.
Low Nickel — Cost Efficiency
With only 3–5.5% Ni, Duplex 2304 offers a cost-effective alternative to higher nickel alloys, while maintaining superior corrosion resistance compared to 304L and 316L in many industrial applications.

Industry Applications

Duplex 2304 Studs Applications — Industries & End Uses

Duplex 2304 Studs from RealBolt are specified across offshore platforms, desalination, pulp and paper, and chemical processing where excellent corrosion resistance and 800 MPa tensile strength are required for reliable fastener performance. Click each industry below for detailed application examples.
Duplex 2304 studs are widely used for bolting in produced water treatment skids, injection wellheads, and piping manifolds where moderate chloride levels and sour gas require better SCC resistance than 316L, but 2205 is not justified on cost.
Fully threaded studs and tie rods for reverse osmosis (RO) pressure vessels, seawater intake screens, and brine concentrators, where Duplex 2304’s PREN and low nickel content provide cost-effective corrosion resistance.
Stud bolts for chemical reactor closures, pulp digesters, and bleach plant piping flanges exposed to organic acids, caustics, and chlorides, where Duplex 2304 outperforms 304L/316L in both strength and pitting resistance.
Duplex 2304 studs are specified for structural bolting in bridges, coastal walkways, and architectural facades where high strength, good weldability, and resistance to atmospheric and salt spray corrosion are required.
