What is Alloy 20 (Carpenter 20Cb-3)?

Alloy 20 (UNS N08020, Carpenter 20Cb-3) is a nickel-iron-chromium alloy with Mo 2–3%, Cu 3–4% and Nb stabilisation, specifically engineered for resistance to sulfuric acid at all concentrations and temperatures. Nb stabilisation prevents sensitisation in welds. PREN approximately 29 — close to duplex 2205. Alloy 20 fasteners are the standard for sulfuric acid plant heat exchangers, H2SO4 storage tank nozzles, acid pickling equipment, explosives manufacture and pharmaceutical vessels handling H2SO4. Bridges the gap between SS 316L and Hastelloy C276 for sulfuric acid service. Governed by ASTM B473 for bar.

Alloy 20 (Carpenter 20Cb-3) Chemical Composition

Alloy 20 (Carpenter 20Cb-3) fasteners derive their exceptional performance from a carefully balanced composition of nickel, chromium, and molybdenum, stabilized with niobium (columbium). Nickel content of approximately 32-38% provides a stable austenitic structure and enhances resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking, while chromium at 19-21% contributes to oxidation resistance and general corrosion protection. Molybdenum, present at 2-3%, significantly improves resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, particularly in sulfuric acid environments. Copper addition, unique to this alloy, further boosts resistance to sulfuric acid attack. Niobium stabilizes the alloy against sensitization during welding, preventing intergranular corrosion.

These alloying elements combine to deliver outstanding resistance to sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, and various chloride-containing media, making Alloy 20 fasteners ideal for chemical processing applications. The material maintains excellent mechanical strength and dimensional stability under demanding service conditions, resisting stress corrosion cracking where standard stainless steels fail. Its balanced composition ensures reliable performance in high-temperature acidic environments, supporting long-term structural integrity. These properties make Alloy 20 fasteners the preferred choice for pumps, valves, and piping systems in aggressive chemical processing industries.

Applications

Alloy 20 Fasteners Applications

Alloy 20 (Carpenter 20Cb-3) Fasteners from RealBolt Engineering Industries are specified wherever corrosion resistance, elevated-temperature strength, or chemical media compatibility is critical to fastener performance. Primary industries and end-uses for Alloy 20 (Carpenter 20Cb-3) fasteners include sulfuric acid service, pharma, food processing, dye industry, chemical.
Alloy 20 bolts, studs and nuts are widely used on sulfuric acid tanks, pumps, valves, heat exchangers and piping systems where standard 304 or 316 stainless fasteners can suffer rapid corrosion.
UNS N08020 fasteners provide dependable bolting for reactors, columns, agitators, filter housings and process skids exposed to acidic chlorides, organic chemicals and mixed corrosive media.
Alloy 20 fasteners are selected for equipment handling acids, cleaning chemicals, dyes, intermediates and additives where contamination control and corrosion resistance are both important.
The high nickel content improves resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking, making Alloy 20 fasteners useful for coastal chemical plants, brine handling equipment and splash-zone process assemblies.

Frequently Asked Questions About Alloy 20 (Carpenter 20Cb-3) Fasteners

Browse the questions below to get quick, expert answers about Alloy 20 (Carpenter 20Cb-3) Fasteners — covering alloy specifications (UNS N08020/DIN 2.4660), applicable standards (ASTM B473), temperature ratings, corrosion performance, and how to source certified Alloy 20 (Carpenter 20Cb-3) fasteners from RealBolt Engineering Industries.
Alloy 20’s Cu 3–4% reduces the corrosion rate in H2SO4 — copper is a cathodic depolariser that stabilises the passive film in sulfuric acid. SS 316L fails in H2SO4 above 10% concentration. Alloy 20 resists H2SO4 from dilute to approximately 96% at ambient temperature and to 50% at elevated temperature.
ASTM B473 covers Alloy 20 (N08020) bar and rod. ASTM B472 covers plate. ASME SB-473 and SB-472 are the pressure-vessel code equivalents. All supplied solution-annealed with EN 10204 3.1 MTC. DIN equivalent: 2.4660.
Moderate. PREN ≈29 is adequate for mild seawater conditions (cool, flowing) but may suffer pitting in warm or stagnant seawater. SS 904L (PREN ≈36) or duplex 2205 (PREN ≥35) is preferred for seawater-critical applications. Alloy 20’s strength lies in sulfuric acid, not seawater service.
Alloy 20 is not specifically listed in NACE MR0175 for sour H2S service. For sour environments, Incoloy 825, Inconel 625 or Hastelloy C276 is specified. Alloy 20 is primarily a sulfuric acid and general chemical plant alloy, not a sour-service alloy.
