What is Duplex 2205?

Duplex 2205 (UNS S32205, previously S31803) is the global standard duplex stainless steel. Its balanced austenite-ferrite microstructure (nominally 50/50) delivers 620 MPa tensile — double austenitic 316L — with PREN ≥35 and chloride SCC resistance that austenitic grades cannot match. Nitrogen 0.14–0.20% stabilises austenite and enhances pitting resistance. Duplex 2205 fasteners are the offshore, marine and chemical plant standard replacing 316L stud bolts in chloride environments. Governed by ASTM A182 F51 and NORSOK M-630. Available as stud bolts, hex bolts and heavy hex nuts in M12–M100 and 1/2–4 inch.

Duplex 2205 Fasteners Chemical Composition

Duplex 2205 fasteners derive their unique properties from a balanced dual-phase microstructure containing approximately equal proportions of austenite and ferrite. Chromium provides passivity and oxidation resistance, while molybdenum and nitrogen additions enhance pitting and crevice corrosion resistance in chloride-rich environments. Nickel stabilises the austenite phase, improving toughness and ductility, whereas manganese and silicon assist deoxidation and structural stability during solidification. This carefully controlled composition produces a fine-grained, high-strength alloy with excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking.

These characteristics make Duplex 2205 fasteners ideal for demanding engineering applications requiring high mechanical strength, superior corrosion resistance and long-term reliability. Their resistance to chloride pitting, crevice attack and stress corrosion cracking makes them well suited for offshore, marine, chemical processing and oil and gas industries. The high yield strength allows for lighter, more compact fastener designs without compromising safety, while excellent weldability and fabrication properties further enhance their suitability for critical structural and pressure-retaining applications.

Applications

Duplex 2205 Fasteners Applications

Duplex 2205 Fasteners from RealBolt Engineering Industries are specified wherever corrosion resistance, elevated-temperature strength, or chemical media compatibility is critical to fastener performance. Primary industries and end-uses for Duplex 2205 fasteners include oil & gas, pulp & paper, desalination, marine structures, chemical tanks.
Duplex 2205 fasteners are widely used on offshore platforms, seawater piping, marine brackets, pump assemblies and splash zone hardware where chloride exposure can cause pitting and crevice corrosion in standard stainless steels.
The chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen content of Duplex 2205 makes these fasteners suitable for reactors, pressure equipment, heat exchangers, tanks and piping systems exposed to acids, chlorides and process chemicals.
Duplex 2205 bolts, nuts and washers perform well in digesters, bleaching equipment, scrubbers, aeration systems and wastewater treatment units where strength and resistance to chloride contaminated fluids are both required.
Duplex 2205 fasteners are selected for desalination plants, produced water systems, valves, flanges and subsea or topside equipment because they combine high mechanical strength with excellent resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking.

Frequently Asked Questions About Duplex 2205 Fasteners

Browse the questions below to get quick, expert answers about Duplex 2205 Fasteners — covering alloy specifications (UNS S31803/S32205), applicable standards (ASTM A182), temperature ratings, corrosion performance, and how to source certified Duplex 2205 fasteners from RealBolt Engineering Industries.
PREN = %Cr + 3.3×%Mo + 16×%N = 22 + 3.3×3 + 16×0.17 ≈ 35. PREN ≥35 resists pitting in seawater up to 25°C and crevice corrosion in the splash zone. Above 25°C seawater (tropical), super-duplex 2507 (PREN ≥42) is required. PREN is a guide — actual service testing is recommended for critical applications.
ASTM A182 Grade F51 covers duplex 2205 flanges (same chemistry, common fastener bar reference). ASTM A276 S32205 for bar. ASTM A479 for structural bar. NORSOK M-630 requires MDS D44 (duplex 22Cr) for offshore fasteners. All supplied with EN 10204 3.1 MTC + Charpy impact test.
Not below -50°C. The ferrite phase in duplex stainless undergoes ductile-to-brittle transition between -50°C and -100°C. For temperatures below -50°C (LNG, LOX), fully austenitic SS 304/316 or nickel alloys are required. Duplex is limited to -50°C with impact test verification.
Yes, listed in NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 for sour service. Restrictions: hardness ≤36 HRC, must be solution annealed (not cold worked), and H2S partial pressure limits apply. We supply with NACE MTC 3.1, PMI and hardness survey for sour service projects.
