Product Overview

What are Hastelloy C22 Studs?

Hastelloy C22 studs are nickel-chromium-molybdenum-tungsten alloy fasteners manufactured from UNS N06022 bar stock conforming to ASTM B574. The alloy’s exceptional corrosion resistance stems from its precisely balanced chemistry – 20-22.5% chromium, 12.5-14.5% molybdenum, and 2.5-3.5% tungsten – delivering outstanding resistance to both oxidizing and reducing corrosive media that no single-phase stainless steel can replicate.

With a PREN exceeding 65, Hastelloy C22 studs resist pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking in aggressive chloride, sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, and mixed acid environments. These studs are specified under NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 for sour-service pressure vessel closures, chemical reactor flanges, and pharmaceutical process equipment worldwide.

Material Chemistry

Hastelloy C22 Chemical Composition

Hastelloy C22 Studs derive their exceptional acid corrosion resistance from a precisely controlled nickel-molybdenum-chromium composition per ASTM. High molybdenum and tungsten content suppresses pitting and reducing-acid attack; ultra-low carbon (0.01% max) eliminates sensitization risk in welded assemblies. Full elemental composition is certified in the EN 10204 MTC supplied with every Hastelloy C22 studs order from RealBolt.

Chemical Composition per ASTM B574

ElementComposition (%)

Why Hastelloy C22 Alloy Composition Matters for Studs

Mo (12.5–14.5%) + W (2.5–3.5%) — Dual Resistance to Oxidizing and Reducing Media
The combined molybdenum and tungsten content gives Hastelloy C22 a PREN exceeding 65, providing resistance to both oxidizing acids (nitric, chromic) and reducing acids (hydrochloric, sulfuric) simultaneously — a capability no single-element alloy can match. This makes C22 studs the preferred choice for mixed-acid process flanges.
Cr (20–22.5%) — Oxidizing Acid and High-Temperature Resistance
The elevated chromium content forms a tenacious passive oxide film that resists attack in nitric acid, wet chlorine, and hypochlorite environments. For stud applications in bleach plant equipment and FGD systems, this chromium level is critical to long-term thread integrity.
Ultra-Low Carbon (0.010% max) — Sensitization-Free Welding
The extremely low carbon ceiling prevents carbide precipitation at grain boundaries during welding or elevated-temperature service. Hastelloy C22 studs welded into assemblies or used in heat-affected zones retain full corrosion resistance without post-weld annealing — a significant advantage over standard C-276 in fabricated equipment.

?? Anti-galling: Use nickel-based anti-seize (Molykote P-37 or Bostik Never-Seez Pure Nickel). Lubricated values assume K=0.15. Never use copper-based or zinc-based anti-seize on nickel alloys - galvanic incompatibility accelerates thread corrosion.

Industry Applications

Hastelloy C22 Studs Applications — Industries & End Uses

Hastelloy C22 Studs from RealBolt are specified across chemical processing, pharmaceutical, oil and gas, and FGD where excellent corrosion resistance and 800 MPa tensile strength are required for reliable fastener performance. Click each industry below for detailed application examples. Select an industry below to see specific Hastelloy C22 studs application details and RealBolt stock availability.
Hastelloy C22 stud bolt sets are the benchmark specification for pressure vessel closures, agitator nozzle flanges, and heat exchanger channel covers in mixed acid environments including HCl/H2SO4, HNO3/HF, and phosphoric acid service. PREN 65+ ensures thread integrity where SS 316L and even C-276 suffer accelerated attack.
Stud bolts for FGD absorber tower flanges, spray header connections, and ductwork expansion joint flanges where saturated HCl-bearing flue gas at 50-80°C creates severe crevice corrosion conditions. Hastelloy C22 outperforms C-276 in oxidizing FGD environments due to its higher chromium content.
Stud bolt sets for sanitary flange connections, reactor closure heads, and autoclave pressure closures in pharmaceutical API synthesis where both oxidizing and reducing process streams alternate within the same vessel. FDA-compatible, ultra-low carbon chemistry prevents contamination risk.
Studs for chlorine dioxide bleaching tower flanges, washer drum connections, and hypochlorite storage vessel nozzles. Hastelloy C22 resists wet chlorine, chlorine dioxide, and sodium hypochlorite at elevated temperatures where titanium and C-276 show measurable corrosion rates.

Hastelloy C22 studs are manufactured to DIN 938 (metal-end engagement 1d), DIN 939 (metal-end engagement 1.25d), and ASME B18.31.2 for continuous-thread studs. Flange stud bolt sets are produced per ASME B16.5 (Class 150-2500) and ASME B16.47 (large diameter flanges). Custom configurations including tap-end studs, double-end studs, and fully threaded studs are available in both metric and inch thread forms with 15 working day lead time.
Hastelloy C22 (UNS N06022) outperforms C-276 (UNS N10276) in oxidizing acid environments due to its higher chromium content (20-22.5% vs 14.5-16.5%). C22 also has a lower carbon ceiling (0.010% max vs 0.010% max) and superior resistance to pitting in ferric chloride and wet chlorine. For mixed-acid service or FGD applications where both oxidizing and reducing conditions exist, C22 studs are the preferred specification. C-276 remains competitive in pure reducing acid service at lower cost.
Yes – Hastelloy C22 studs supplied in the annealed condition with hardness not exceeding 35 HRC fully comply with NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 for sour-service (H2S-bearing) applications. Each batch is supplied with a hardness survey report. For Class 900-2500 flange stud bolt sets in sour service, we provide individual hardness certification per stud on request, along with EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 mill test certificates covering chemical composition, mechanical properties, and hardness.
Standard sizes from M12 to M36 and ½” to 1½” are held ex-stock in Mumbai with no formal MOQ – single-piece supply is available for emergency maintenance and shutdown requirements. Custom sizes and non-standard lengths carry a minimum of 10 kg per size. ASME B16.5 flange stud bolt sets are supplied by the complete set with no minimum quantity. Volume price breaks apply at 25 sets, 100 sets, and 250 sets for flange stud bolt assemblies.
