Product Overview

What are Hastelloy C22 Threaded Rods?

Hastelloy C22 threaded rods are nickel-chromium-molybdenum-tungsten alloy fasteners manufactured from UNS N06022 bar stock conforming to ASTM B574. The alloy’s exceptional corrosion resistance stems from its precisely balanced chemistry – 20-22.5% chromium, 12.5-14.5% molybdenum, and 2.5-3.5% tungsten – delivering outstanding resistance to both oxidising and reducing media simultaneously.

With a PREN exceeding 65, Hastelloy C22 threaded rods outperform virtually every other wrought nickel alloy in mixed-acid environments, wet chlorine service, and hypochlorite-bearing process streams. These rods are specified under NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 for sour-service pressure vessel closures, chemical reactor tie rods, and flue gas scrubber internals where no other alloy provides adequate service life.

Material Chemistry

Hastelloy C22 Chemical Composition

Hastelloy C22 Threaded Rods derive their exceptional acid corrosion resistance from a precisely controlled nickel-molybdenum-chromium composition per ASTM. High molybdenum and tungsten content suppresses pitting and reducing-acid attack; ultra-low carbon (0.01% max) eliminates sensitization risk in welded assemblies. Full elemental composition is certified in the EN 10204 MTC supplied with every Hastelloy C22 threaded rods order from RealBolt.

Why Hastelloy C22 Alloy Composition Matters for Threaded Rods

Mo (12.5–14.5%) + W (2.5–3.5%) — Dual Reducing-Media Protection
The combined molybdenum and tungsten content gives Hastelloy C22 a PREN exceeding 65 — the highest of any standard wrought nickel alloy. This dual addition provides exceptional resistance to reducing acids including hydrochloric, sulphuric, and phosphoric acid, making C22 threaded rods the preferred choice for chemical reactor tie-rod applications where mixed acid exposure is unavoidable.
Cr (20–22.5%) — Oxidising Environment Resistance
The elevated chromium content gives Hastelloy C22 threaded rods outstanding resistance to oxidising media — nitric acid, ferric chloride, and wet chlorine — that would rapidly attack lower-chromium nickel alloys such as C276. This dual oxidising/reducing capability is unique to C22 among the C-family alloys.
Ultra-Low Carbon (0.010% max) — Sensitisation-Free Welding
The extremely low carbon ceiling prevents carbide precipitation at grain boundaries during welding or elevated-temperature service. Hastelloy C22 threaded rods can be welded into assemblies or used in heat-affected zones without risk of intergranular corrosion, eliminating the need for post-weld solution annealing in most process applications.

?? Anti-galling: Use nickel-based anti-seize (Molykote P-37 or Bostik Never-Seez Pure Nickel). Lubricated values assume K=0.15. Never use copper-based anti-seize on nickel alloys - galvanic incompatibility accelerates thread corrosion.

Industry Applications

Hastelloy C22 Threaded Rods Applications — Industries & End Uses

Hastelloy C22 Threaded Rods from RealBolt are specified across chemical processing, pharmaceutical, oil and gas, and FGD where excellent corrosion resistance and 800 MPa tensile strength are required for reliable fastener performance. Click each industry below for detailed application examples.
Hastelloy C22 threaded rods are the standard specification for tie-rod and closure bolt assemblies on chemical reactors handling mixed oxidising and reducing acid streams. Applications include phosphoric acid digesters, sulphuric acid absorption towers, and nitric/hydrofluoric acid pickling line equipment where no single-chemistry alloy provides adequate resistance.
Threaded rods and stud assemblies for FGD scrubber vessel internals, spray header supports, mist eliminator frames, and absorber tower tie rods. Hastelloy C22 resists the highly corrosive combination of dilute sulphuric acid, chloride ions, and dissolved SO2 that rapidly degrades stainless steel and even C276 alloy fasteners in wet FGD service.
Reactor closure rods, agitator shaft tie rods, and pressure vessel fastener assemblies for pharmaceutical API synthesis vessels handling halogenated solvents, acetic acid, and oxidising cleaning agents. C22 threaded rods meet FDA material traceability requirements and are compatible with CIP/SIP sterilisation cycles.
Threaded rod assemblies for chlorine dioxide bleaching tower internals, washer drum supports, and bleach liquor pipe hangers. Hastelloy C22 provides superior resistance to hypochlorite and chlorine dioxide solutions at elevated temperatures – environments that cause rapid stress corrosion cracking in austenitic stainless steels.

Hastelloy C22 Threaded Rods — Frequently Asked Questions

Browse expert answers to common questions about Hastelloy C22 Threaded Rods from RealBolt — covering acid corrosion resistance, NACE MR0175 compliance, ASTM standards, available sizes, and MTC documentation. Contact our technical team directly for project-specific guidance on Hastelloy C22 threaded rods selection and pricing.
Hastelloy C22 threaded rods are manufactured to DIN 975 for full-length metric threaded rod and DIN 976-1 for metric stud configurations. Inch-series rods conform to ASME B18.31.3 for continuous threaded rod. Flange stud bolt sets are produced per ASME B16.5 or MSS SP-75. Custom lengths are available in any increment, and special thread forms including BSW, BSF, and BSPP can be produced with a 15 working day lead time. All rods carry thread tolerance 6g per ISO 965.
Hastelloy C22 outperforms C276 in oxidising acid environments due to its higher chromium content (20-22.5% vs 14.5-16.5% in C276). In reducing acid service, both alloys perform similarly, though C22’s combined Mo+W addition provides marginally better pitting resistance (PREN 65+ vs 62+ for C276). For mixed-acid or alternating oxidising/reducing process streams, C22 threaded rods are the preferred specification. C276 remains cost-competitive where purely reducing conditions prevail.
Yes – Hastelloy C22 threaded rods comply with NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 for sour service when supplied in the solution-annealed condition with hardness not exceeding 35 HRC. The alloy is listed in NACE MR0175 Part 3 for use in H2S-bearing oil and gas environments. Hardness survey certificates are available on request for Class 900 and above sour-service applications. All rods are supplied with EN 10204 3.1 MTC confirming hardness compliance.
In oxidising atmospheres, Hastelloy C22 threaded rods maintain adequate oxidation resistance up to approximately 1038°C. In reducing or sulphidising atmospheres, the practical service limit is lower – typically 760°C – due to sulphide attack at elevated temperatures. For structural fastener applications, the recommended maximum continuous service temperature is 650°C, above which creep relaxation must be factored into joint design. Consult our engineering team for high-temperature bolted joint calculations.
