Product Overview

What are Inconel 601 Screws?

Inconel 601 screws are nickel-chromium-aluminium alloy fasteners manufactured from UNS N06601 bar stock conforming to ASTM B166. The alloy’s exceptional oxidation resistance is derived from its aluminium content (1.0-1.7%), which forms a tightly adherent, self-healing aluminium oxide scale that protects the base metal at temperatures up to 1230°C.

With a nickel content of 58-63% and chromium at 21-25%, Inconel 601 screws deliver outstanding resistance to high-temperature oxidation, carburisation, and nitriding atmospheres. These fasteners are widely specified for industrial furnace components, thermal processing equipment, and high-temperature structural assemblies where standard stainless steel screws fail within weeks of service.

Material Chemistry

Inconel 601 Chemical Composition

Inconel 601 Screws are manufactured from a nickel-chromium superalloy containing nickel (72% min), chromium (14–17%), and iron (6–10%). Each element is precisely controlled per ASTM — nickel provides chloride SCC immunity, chromium drives high-temperature oxidation resistance, and iron balances structural stability and alloy cost.

Why Inconel 601 Alloy Composition Matters for Screws

Al (1.0–1.7%) — Oxidation Scale Formation
Aluminium is the defining element in Inconel 601. It forms a dense, adherent Al2O3 oxide layer at elevated temperatures that resists spalling during thermal cycling — critical for screws used in furnace door hinges, retort closures, and heat treatment fixtures that cycle repeatedly between ambient and service temperature.
Cr (21–25%) — Carburisation & Sulphidation Resistance
The high chromium content provides a secondary Cr2O3 barrier that resists carburisation in hydrocarbon atmospheres and sulphidation in combustion gas environments. Inconel 601 screws maintain structural integrity in atmospheres where carbon activity is high enough to destroy lower-chromium alloys.
Fe Balance — Cost-Effective High-Temperature Performance
The iron balance (approximately 14%) reduces raw material cost compared to fully nickel-based alloys while preserving the high-temperature mechanical properties needed for fastener applications above 900°C. This makes Inconel 601 screws the preferred choice where Inconel 625 or 718 would be over-specified.

?? Anti-galling: Use nickel-based anti-seize (Molykote P-37 or equivalent). Lubricated values assume K=0.15. Never use copper-based anti-seize on nickel alloys - galvanic corrosion risk at elevated temperatures.

Industry Applications

Inconel 601 Screws Applications — Industries & End Uses

Inconel 601 Screws from RealBolt are specified across oil and gas, aerospace, chemical processing, and power generation where excellent corrosion resistance and 760 MPa tensile strength are required for reliable fastener performance. Click each industry below for detailed application examples.
Inconel 601 screws are the standard fastener for industrial furnace construction – including roller hearth, pusher, and box furnaces. Used to secure refractory anchors, radiant tube supports, muffle retort closures, and furnace door hardware operating continuously above 900°C in oxidising and cycling thermal atmospheres.
Socket head cap screws and hex screws in Inconel 601 are specified for atmosphere retort closures, carburising basket assemblies, and nitriding fixture hardware. The alloy’s resistance to carburisation and nitriding atmospheres prevents embrittlement and thread seizure that destroys stainless steel fasteners within a single campaign.
Inconel 601 screws are used in fired heater tube support hangers, radiant section refractory anchors, and convection section casing connections where flue gas temperatures exceed 1000°C and sulphur-bearing combustion products are present. Outperforms 310 stainless steel in cyclic oxidation resistance.
Flange screws and structural fasteners for waste-to-energy boiler refractory linings, incinerator grate assemblies, and ash handling equipment where chlorine-bearing combustion gases and temperatures above 850°C combine to rapidly corrode lower-alloy fasteners. Inconel 601 provides reliable service life in these aggressive environments.

Inconel 601 Screws — Frequently Asked Questions

Inconel 601 screws are manufactured to DIN 933 (hex full thread), DIN 912 (socket head cap screws), ISO 4017 (hex head screws), ISO 4762 (socket head cap screws), and ASME B18.6.3 (inch machine screws). Special drive types including Torx, Phillips, and slotted heads are available on request. Custom thread forms including BSW and UNF are produced with a 15 working day lead time.
Inconel 601 screws are rated for continuous service up to 1230°C in oxidising atmospheres – the highest oxidation resistance of any commercially available nickel alloy fastener. In cyclic thermal service (repeated heating and cooling), the aluminium oxide scale remains adherent and self-healing, preventing the scale spalling that causes rapid metal loss in 310 stainless steel and other high-temperature alloys.
Inconel 601 significantly outperforms 310 stainless steel above 900°C. The aluminium addition in alloy 601 creates a more protective oxide scale than the chromium-only scale in 310 SS, particularly under cyclic thermal conditions. In carburising atmospheres, 601 resists carbon ingress that embrittles 310 SS within a single heat treatment campaign. For furnace applications above 950°C, Inconel 601 screws typically deliver 3-5 times the service life of 310 SS fasteners.
Inconel 601 performs well in oxidising and mildly reducing atmospheres but is not recommended for strongly reducing, sulphidising environments at high temperature. In mixed atmospheres – such as those found in industrial furnaces with controlled nitrogen-hydrogen atmospheres – alloy 601 performs reliably. For strongly sulphidising reducing conditions, Inconel 625 or alloy 825 should be considered. Contact our engineering team for atmosphere-specific guidance.
