Product Overview

What are Inconel 601 Washers?

Inconel 601 washers are nickel-chromium-aluminium alloy fastener components manufactured from UNS N06601 bar or plate stock conforming to ASTM B168 / ASTM B564. The alloy’s exceptional oxidation resistance derives from a tightly adherent alumina-rich oxide scale formed by the 1.0-1.7% aluminium content working in concert with 21-25% chromium, providing continuous service capability to 1230°C.

Inconel 601 washers are specified wherever standard stainless steel or even Inconel 625 washers cannot withstand cyclic high-temperature oxidation, carburisation, or nitriding atmospheres. They are widely used under bolt heads and nuts in furnace construction, heat treatment equipment, industrial combustion systems, and petrochemical reformer piping where load-bearing surfaces must resist creep relaxation and scale spalling simultaneously.

Material Chemistry

Inconel 601 Chemical Composition

Inconel 601 Washers are manufactured from a nickel-chromium superalloy containing nickel (72% min), chromium (14–17%), and iron (6–10%). Each element is precisely controlled per ASTM — nickel provides chloride SCC immunity, chromium drives high-temperature oxidation resistance, and iron balances structural stability and alloy cost.

Chemical Composition per ASTM B168

Why Inconel 601 Alloy Composition Matters for Washers

Al (1.0–1.7%) — Alumina Scale Formation
Aluminium promotes the formation of a dense, adherent Al2O3 oxide layer on the washer surface at elevated temperatures. This scale resists spalling under thermal cycling, preventing scale contamination of mating flange faces and maintaining consistent clamp load over service life.
Cr (21–25%) — Oxidation and Carburisation Resistance
The high chromium content provides a secondary Cr2O3 barrier that protects the washer bearing surface in carburising and nitriding atmospheres encountered in heat treatment furnaces and reformer piping. This dual-oxide protection mechanism is unique to alloy 601 among standard nickel alloys.
Fe Balance — Cost-Effective High-Temperature Performance
The iron balance (approximately 14%) reduces raw material cost compared to fully nickel-based alloys while maintaining adequate creep resistance to 1100°C. For washer applications where corrosion resistance to chlorides is secondary to thermal stability, alloy 601 delivers superior value over Inconel 625 or Hastelloy C-276.

Industry Applications

Inconel 601 Washers Applications — Industries & End Uses

Inconel 601 Washers from RealBolt are specified across oil and gas, aerospace, chemical processing, and power generation where excellent corrosion resistance and 760 MPa tensile strength are required for reliable fastener performance. Click each industry below for detailed application examples.
Inconel 601 washers are the standard choice for bolt assemblies in continuous annealing furnaces, box furnaces, bell furnaces, and roller hearth kilns operating between 900°C and 1230°C. The alumina-rich oxide scale prevents washer-to-flange face adhesion and scale contamination during thermal cycling, maintaining reliable clamp load across thousands of heat cycles.
Flat and large-OD washers for tube support hanger bolts, refractory anchor studs, and fired heater casing flange connections in steam methane reformers (SMR), catalytic reformers, and ethylene cracking furnaces. Alloy 601 resists carburisation and nitriding atmospheres that rapidly degrade 310 stainless steel washer alternatives.
Washer sets for combustion chamber casing bolts, transition duct attachment hardware, and exhaust stack flange connections in industrial gas turbines. Also specified for grate and refractory anchor bolting in municipal solid waste (MSW) incinerators where HCl-bearing combustion gases combine with temperatures above 900°C.
Inconel 601 washers are used under stud bolt nuts on reactor closure flanges, catalyst bed support grids, and high-temperature pressure vessel nozzle connections in sulphuric acid plants, nitric acid plants, and ammonia synthesis loops where oxidising conditions at elevated temperature exceed the capability of 321 or 347 stainless steel.

Contact our technical team directly for project-specific guidance on Inconel 601 washers selection and pricing.
Inconel 601 flat washers are manufactured to DIN 125 (normal series), DIN 9021 (large OD series), ISO 7089, and ISO 7093 for metric sizes. Inch sizes are produced per ASME B18.22.1 (plain washers) and ASME B18.21.1 (lock washers). Flange washer sets for ASME B16.5 applications are available in Class 150 through Class 2500. Custom profiles including taper washers, dock washers, and fender washers are available with 15 working day lead time.
Inconel 601 washers can be used continuously up to 1230°C in oxidising atmospheres and up to approximately 1100°C in mildly reducing or cyclic thermal environments. The aluminium content (1.0-1.7%) forms a protective Al2O3 scale that resists spalling during thermal cycling – a critical advantage over 310 stainless steel or Inconel 600 washers in furnace and fired heater applications. For carburising atmospheres, the practical limit is approximately 1050°C before carbon ingress becomes significant.
Inconel 601 and Inconel 625 serve different primary functions. Inconel 601 washers are optimised for high-temperature oxidation resistance up to 1230°C and are the correct choice for furnace, fired heater, and combustion system applications. Inconel 625 washers are optimised for aqueous corrosion resistance (PREN 51+) and are specified for seawater, sour service, and chemical process environments at lower temperatures. For applications combining elevated temperature with aggressive corrosion, Inconel 617 or Hastelloy X may be more appropriate – contact our engineering team for a grade recommendation.
Yes – EN 10204 3.2 TPI-witnessed mill test certificates are available for all Inconel 601 washer orders. Third-party inspection by Bureau Veritas, SGS, TÜV, or Lloyds Register can be arranged at our Mumbai facility. Hardness surveys, dimensional inspection reports, and PMI (positive material identification) by XRF are included on request. All documentation is provided in English with full heat traceability from raw plate or bar to finished washer.
