What is Monel 400?

Monel 400 (UNS N04400) is a nickel-copper alloy with Ni 63–70% and Cu 28–34%, combining the corrosion resistance of copper in seawater with the strength and SCC immunity of nickel. Resistant to hydrofluoric acid at all concentrations and temperatures — a unique capability among common engineering alloys. Non-magnetic in all tempers. Monel 400 fasteners are used in marine pump and valve shafts, offshore seawater service, hydrofluoric acid alkylation units, chemical plant handling HF, sulfuric acid and salt water systems, and food processing equipment. Governed by ASTM B164 for bar stock.

Monel 400 Fasteners Chemical Composition

Monel 400 fasteners derive their properties from a nickel-copper alloy composition, typically containing 63-70% nickel and 28-34% copper, with small additions of iron, manganese, carbon and silicon. The high nickel content provides exceptional resistance to alkalis and reducing environments, while the copper addition enhances resistance to hydrofluoric acid and seawater corrosion. Iron and manganese contribute to improved mechanical strength and hot-working characteristics, ensuring the alloy maintains structural integrity during fastener manufacturing processes such as forging and thread rolling.

This carefully balanced composition delivers outstanding corrosion resistance across marine, chemical processing and oil and gas environments, making Monel 400 fasteners ideal for demanding applications. The alloy retains good mechanical properties from sub-zero temperatures up to 425°C, offering excellent strength without embrittlement. Its inherent resistance to stress corrosion cracking, combined with non-magnetic properties and good weldability, makes it a preferred choice for critical bolting applications in seawater systems, chemical plants and offshore platforms where reliability and longevity are essential.

Applications

Monel 400 Fasteners Applications

Monel 400 Fasteners from RealBolt Engineering Industries are specified wherever corrosion resistance, elevated-temperature strength, or chemical media compatibility is critical to fastener performance. Primary industries and end-uses for Monel 400 fasteners include marine hardware, valves, seawater service, acids, alkaline solutions.

Monel 400 bolts, nuts and studs are widely used on seawater piping, pumps, valves, heat exchangers, splash-zone structures and shipboard equipment. The alloy resists flowing seawater and brine better than many stainless steels, helping reduce galling, crevice corrosion and premature fastener replacement.

Alloy 400 fasteners are selected for process vessels, evaporators, transfer lines and acid-handling equipment exposed to hydrofluoric acid, neutral and alkaline salts, caustic soda and reducing media. Their nickel-copper chemistry provides dependable corrosion resistance without relying on high chromium content.

Monel 400 studs and nuts are used in refinery, offshore and gas-processing assemblies where chloride-bearing environments, produced water and non-oxidizing media are present. Correct material certification, heat condition and coating selection should be matched to project specifications and service severity.

Monel 400 fasteners are suitable for desalination plants, brine heaters, feedwater equipment and heat exchanger assemblies. The alloy maintains toughness at low temperature and offers stable mechanical performance across a broad operating range, making it useful for both maintenance and new-build critical bolting.

Frequently Asked Questions About Monel 400 Fasteners

Browse the questions below to get quick, expert answers about Monel 400 Fasteners — covering alloy specifications (UNS N04400), applicable standards (ASTM B164), temperature ratings, corrosion performance, and how to source certified Monel 400 fasteners from RealBolt Engineering Industries.
Monel 400 forms a protective fluoride film (NiF2/CuF2) in HF that prevents further attack. This is unique among common engineering alloys — SS 316L, even 904L, attacks rapidly in HF. HF alkylation unit flanges, valve bodies and pump hardware are the primary fastener application.
ASTM B164 covers Monel 400 rod and bar. ASTM B127 covers plate. ASME SB-164 and SB-127 are the pressure-vessel code equivalents. Supplied hot-finished or cold-drawn, solution-annealed, with EN 10204 3.1 MTC.
Yes. Monel 400 resists seawater pitting and crevice corrosion without passive film dependence. Unlike SS grades, it does not suffer crevice attack under rubber gaskets and bolt washers in seawater service. Used for marine pump bolts, condenser heads and submarine cable hardware.
Yes, in non-aerated H2SO4 to 80% at ambient temperature. Aeration or Fe3+ contamination can cause accelerated attack — Hastelloy C276 is preferred for such conditions. Monel 400 is not suitable for oxidising acids.
