What is Titanium Grade 1?

Titanium Grade 1 (UNS R50250) is the purest commercial-grade titanium with the lowest oxygen content (≤0.18%) of the four unalloyed grades. This gives the lowest strength (240 MPa tensile) but maximum formability and ductility. Density is 4.51 g/cm³ — 57% of steel — with excellent corrosion resistance in oxidising and mildly reducing environments. Titanium Grade 1 fasteners are used in heat exchanger tubesheet bolting in oxidising chloride service, chemical plant where maximum formability is needed, medical device implants and aerospace applications requiring purity. Governed by ASTM B348 for bar stock.

Titanium Grade 1 Fasteners Chemical Composition

Titanium Grade 1 is a commercially pure titanium containing minimal alloying additions, with only trace amounts of iron, oxygen, carbon, nitrogen and hydrogen controlling its mechanical behaviour. Oxygen and iron content are kept lower than in Grade 2, resulting in the softest and most ductile grade among commercially pure titanium variants. This low interstitial content enhances formability and cold workability, making it ideal for parts requiring extensive bending or forming while maintaining excellent toughness at cryogenic and moderate temperatures.

The high purity of Titanium Grade 1 provides outstanding corrosion resistance in chloride environments, seawater and oxidising acids due to a stable, self-healing titanium oxide layer. Its excellent weldability, biocompatibility and low density make it highly suitable for fasteners used in marine, chemical processing, medical and architectural applications. Although it offers lower strength than higher grades, its superior ductility and corrosion performance make it the preferred choice where formability and long-term durability outweigh high-strength requirements.

Applications

Titanium Grade 1 Fasteners Applications

Titanium Grade 1 Fasteners from RealBolt Engineering Industries are specified wherever corrosion resistance, elevated-temperature strength, or chemical media compatibility is critical to fastener performance. Primary industries and end-uses for Titanium Grade 1 fasteners include softest cp ti; highest corrosion resistance; medical, marine, architecture.
Titanium Grade 1 fasteners are widely used for seawater piping, pumps, valves, splash-zone assemblies, shipboard hardware and offshore equipment where chloride corrosion resistance and low weight are important.
The material performs well in many oxidizing acids, wet chlorine compounds, salt solutions and process streams, making it suitable for reactor internals, flange bolting, pressure vessel attachments and chemical plant hardware.
Grade 1 titanium bolts, nuts and washers are commonly selected for plate heat exchangers, condenser assemblies, evaporators and desalination units because titanium resists seawater attack and biofouling-related corrosion.
Because it is non-magnetic, lightweight and highly ductile, Titanium Grade 1 is used for precision fasteners in medical equipment, aerospace support systems, instrumentation and applications requiring dependable corrosion resistance without high strength requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions About Titanium Grade 1 Fasteners

Browse the questions below to get quick, expert answers about Titanium Grade 1 Fasteners — covering alloy specifications (UNS R50250), applicable standards (ASTM B348), temperature ratings, corrosion performance, and how to source certified Titanium Grade 1 fasteners from RealBolt Engineering Industries.
Grade 1’s ultra-low interstitial content (O, N, C, H) provides maximum biocompatibility and ductility for cold-forming into implant shapes. Lower strength allows controlled deformation under impact. Grade 4 is used where higher-strength implant fasteners are required. Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V ELI) is most common for structural implants.
ASTM B348 Grade 1 covers titanium bar and billet. ASTM F136 covers Grade 1 for surgical implants. ASME SB-348 for pressure-vessel applications. AMS 4928 for aerospace grade. All supplied with EN 10204 3.1 MTC including chemical analysis, tensile and hardness.
Grade 1 resists seawater, wet chlorine, chloride solutions, nitric acid, dilute sulfuric acid (below 5% at ambient) and most oxidising environments through a stable TiO2 passive film. Not suitable for hydrofluoric acid, concentrated H2SO4, or strongly reducing environments where the passive film dissolves.
Grade 1 density is 4.51 g/cm³ vs 7.93 g/cm³ for SS 304 — 43% lighter. For weight-critical aerospace fastener applications, this provides significant advantage. Specific strength (strength/density) of grade 4 exceeds SS 316 despite lower absolute tensile strength.
