SS 410 and 416 are martensitic stainless steels containing 11.5-13.5% chromium, providing the base corrosion resistance and hardenability characteristic of this family. Grade 416 incorporates additional sulfur content, which forms manganese sulfide inclusions that dramatically improve machinability while slightly reducing corrosion resistance compared to 410. Carbon content, typically 0.15% in 410 and up to 0.15% in 416, enables heat treatment through quenching and tempering, allowing manufacturers to achieve a wide range of hardness and strength combinations tailored to specific fastener requirements.
These grades deliver an excellent balance of moderate corrosion resistance, high strength and good wear resistance, making them ideal for fastener applications in oil and gas, marine, and industrial equipment. Their heat treatability allows tensile strengths exceeding 800 MPa, while retained toughness ensures reliable performance under cyclic and shock loading. Grade 416’s superior machinability reduces production costs for high-volume threaded components, while both grades resist oxidation up to 750°C, making them suitable for moderately elevated temperature bolting applications.
Specifications
SS 410 / 416 Fasteners combine corrosion-resistant stainless steel performance with precise dimensional tolerances, thread profiles, and strength characteristics suited to demanding mechanical applications. Their technical data typically covers diameter, length, finish, and load-bearing behavior, making them defined by mechanical properties and dimensional specifications.
